Then you should know not to take one moment in time, and one specific chart, to try and prove SWM is more popular than an MJ Halloween song. You didn't bother, at the time, to mention that 'Thriller' was out performing (by far) every other Halloween song when looking at the major format in major countries. It always does.

Actually, you tried to be the "smart arse" by taking that one moment in time to put down SCREAM.

Thriller will outperform every other Halloween song again this year. SCREAM will spend another week in the UK charts - possibly moving massively up the charts - when you said it would be out.

Happy Halloween!

This is likely the last time i'll bother replying to you. I never said swm was more popular than thriller, nor did i try to prove it. I simply stated what i saw. In fact i was surprised that thriller didn't appear in any of the Spotify charts when other Halloween songs did.
I didn't try to put down scream, in fact i have always said it is a good product. I have suggested it could have had a better title to make it more visible and to attract more impulse purchases at this time of year. That didn't mean it is a bad product. However it's chart performance is likely disappointing for song and the estate. They didn't release it when they did expecting it to almost drop out if the top 100 before Halloween.

I wouldn't worry about Spotify. ITunes is much more relevant when it comes to charts.

SCREAM will spend a 5th week in the charts this week, and maybe a 6th the week after. Not bad for a compilation album of old hits, released to coincide with Halloween, which ever way you cut it.

iTunes has much more push because it is straight-up sales, but that doesn't mean you should ignore the largest streaming service in the world. They both give good representations of how many people are playing said music.

If you're curious about Spotify though, Thriller is #44 most played globally today, averaging 1,393,427 plays a day. Not bad considering Halloween was a few nights ago, and most Halloween parties were over last weekend where most of the plays would be - I imagine.

Personally I don't really care for charts anymore. I know Thriller does well over Halloween and I'm just glad that people embrace it this time every year :)

I hope Thriller gets certified again soon in the US. I love for MJ to have a diamond single in US.

Good to see SCREAM move up 80 places to #19!

Also good to see THRILLER is the #1 Halloween song this year, yet again!

Source: music week

Three songs always boosted by Halloween return to prominence this week: Michael Jackson's Thriller (No.34, 9,444 sales), Ray Parker Jr's Ghostbusters (No.65, 5,406 sales) and Bobby 'Boris' Picket's Monster Mash (No.94, 3,744 sales). Thriller is also being helped by the current TV campaign for the latest Michael Jackson compilation, Scream, in which it features. Said campaign, and its release on fluorescent vinyl, also helps that album – which debuted and peaked four weeks ago at No.9 – to surge 99-19 (3,778 sales)

Interesting. The new Gregory Porter 'Nat King Cole' album seems to have had much greater promotion than 'Scream'...I've seen it everywhere on social media.

I take it you're talking about UK promo?

Gregory Porter is only really successful in the UK and a couple of other European countries. It's easy, and less costly, to target one or two countries for someone like Porter than it is for a world wide mega star like MJ.

With a highest USA album of #82, I doubt if they spent much of their promo budget in the USA. They'll blow it on his only major market, the UK.

He's certainly been on quite a few UK TV programmes promoting the album. As to social media, I'm not sure what is shared outside vs within the UK.

Edit: I thought Nat 'King' Cole was also popular in the USA, so it would make sense to promote there, because of the 'Cole' legacy fans, let alone that Porter is American?

Yes it had great promotion and it sold many more copies than scream overall. It was the album's debut.

Source: music week.

US jazz singer Gregory Porter was never in the chase for No.1 but scores his third straight Top 10 album, and secures his highest chart placing to date with his fifth studio album, Nat "King" Cole & Me. As its title suggests, the album is a tribute to legendary crooner Nat "King" Cole, and consists primarily of songs associated with him, though there's also a Cole-inspired original, When Love Was King. With first week sales of 29,694 copies, the album opens at No.3. It is the highest sales for this chart position for 32 weeks.

Perhaps I wasn't clear.

He only sales well in the UK. Of course it helps he's alive and can appear on TV in his only major market.

What's his sales in the USA compared to SCREAM?

I predict he will be outsold in the vast majority of countries by MJ.

P.S. Porter is American. They just don't seem interested in him.

I think you are right. Porter seems only to have a market in Europe, most important the UK. I did not find the album in i-tunes USA, nor is it listed in Hitsdouble-prediction Top 50.

I've never seen ads for him here. I've only heard of him because of this forum. I looked up his discography and charts on Wikipedia. Seems to be popular in the UK, France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.

My original comment (that Porter's album promotion seemed more ubiquitous (to me) here in the UK, than 'Scream' promotion) was about the UK Vinyl sales chart where Porter was #3 and 'Scream' was # 2. So I'm not really sure why the US sales are relevant. I made a comment about being surprised that he wasn't promoted there as he and NKC are both American....that's all. Everything is very clear, thank you.

It was good to see SCREAM move back up the charts last week, all over the world.

Let's hope of reappears next year and, with a little promotional push, for many more to come.

Yes in the times of low sales it is obviously that the importance of the streaming-portals gets more and more important.
I found out that Michael`s monthly listernes on spotify increased just in the last month from 14,7 mio. to 17,66 mio. . So nearly 3 mio. listeners more in only 1 month. I think the Sream-release had some impact on this. His position jumped from 87 to 64 on the Spotify -worldwide- list. I think this is amazing. There are only current artists before him and many of them behind him such as Timberlake, Adele......
