'Thriller' Reissue Bows At No. 1 In Europe
February 21, 2008 - Global
http://www.billboard.biz

By Paul Sexton, London

Michael Jackson's augmented 25th anniversary reissue of "Thriller" (Legacy/Epic) enters in pole position on Billboard's European Top 100 Albums chart. Meanwhile on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles, "Apologize" (Mosley/Blackground/Interscope) by Timbaland presents One Republic starts a 14th week at No. 1.

The Jackson album makes one No. 1 start, in France, but also climbs 21-1 and 14-1 in the Belgian regions of Flanders and Wallony respectively. It's in at No. 2 in Germany, Switzerland, Holland and Norway; No. 3 in the United Kingdom (on sales of 41,000), Portugal and Denmark; No. 4 in Spain; No. 5 in Austria and Ireland and No. 6 in Italy.

Amy Winehouse holds at No. 2 on the composite chart with "Back To Black" (Universal Island), as the multi-platinum set enjoys a 9-1 surge in Portugal, holds at No. 1 in Germany and Holland and climbs 6-2 in Austria, 5-2 in Ireland, 4-2 in France, 3-2 in Spain, 6-3 in Flanders and 5-3 in Switzerland. In the United Kingdom, Winehouse climbs both with the regular edition of the album (20-16) and the "Deluxe Edition" (21-14).

Jack Johnson's "Sleep Across The Static" (Brushfire/Universal Island), which entered Top 100 Albums at No. 1 last week, falls to No. 3, despite spending a second week atop the U.K. chart on sales of 47,000, for a two-week total of 101,000. "Static" is also No. 1 again in Ireland, but dips in other European markets.

Lenny Kravitz falls 3-4 on the Europe-wide tally with "It Is Time For A Love Revolution" (Virgin), despite holding at No. 1 in Switzerland, No. 3 in Italy and No. 5 in Flanders. The album falls 2-3 in Holland, 3-5 in Germany, 5-10 in France and 6-10 in Spain. The single from it, "I'll Be Waiting," is up 19-13 on the Eurochart.

Also falling one place each on Top 100 Albums are Leona Lewis' "Spirit" (Syco Music/Sony BMG), 4-5 despite a No. 3 entry in Greece, and Rihanna's "Good Girl Gone Bad" (SRP/Def Jam), 5-6. But Nickelback's "All The Right Reasons" (Roadrunner) is up 9-7 as it nears the top of the U.K. chart some 28 months after release. It's up 3-2 there on weekly sales of 46,000.

Mika's "Life In Cartoon Motion" (Casablanca/Island) is down 7-8 overall, although it climbs 11-9 in its 54th U.K. chart week. James Blunt makes that same move on the pan-European tally with "All The Lost Souls" (Atlantic), and another big pan-European seller of recent months, Eros Ramazotti's "E2" (Ariola), is back up 20-10, re-energized by a No. 1 debut in Sweden.

The extraordinary Eurochart-topping feats of "Apologize" now place it within one week of the aggregate 15-week run at No.1 established by "Hips Don't Lie" (Epic) by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean in the summer of 2006. But only 13 of those were consecutive, whereas Timbaland's single has had 14 straight weeks at the top. The track now posts climbs of 2-1 in Italy and 14-7 in France.

The top new entry on the Eurochart is Welsh singer Duffy's "Mercy" (A&M/Universal), in at No. 7 after a No. 1 debut in the United Kingdom on downloads of 38,000.

Michael Jackson is planning a comeback with a brand new 1920s gangster chic look, according to his stylist Andre Van Pier.

Van Pier — who styled Jackson in the 1980s and 90s — has created a new image for the pop superstar, complete with fedora, waist-coat and pocket watch.

He revealed, “This is the style Michael is leaning toward when he gets back on stage.” He claims he came up with the look last year, when Jackson was planning a Las Vegas residency — a plan that never materialised.

Now the singer wants to stage a comeback to follow the US release of a 25th anniversary edition of his classic album Thriller — with a TV special and a new album.

J***`s record label fuming over chart snub

New York, Feb 22: Michael Jackson's record label bosses are fuming after the US Billboard chart refused to recognise the singer’s ‘Thriller 25’ as a new album.

The singer's 25th anniversary edition of the hit ‘Thriller’ was relegated to the catalogue chart after Billboard classed it as a re-issue.

However, Sony is insisting the album contains enough new material for it to be considered a separate recording from the original 1982 version.

"It has six new songs. Michael went into the studio and recorded with Kanye West, Fergie, Akon, Will.i.Am - and there's a brand-new song from Michael, and videos," The New York Daily News quoted a source, as saying.

“It beat Grammy winners Amy Winehouse and Herbie Hancock, with 167,000 crossing the counter.

“Yet for reasons unfathomable to folks in the music industry, Billboard has decided to relegate it to the catalogue chart. Catalogue makes it look like same ol' same ol', but with a new cover.

"Michael expected it to be on the Top 200 chart," the source added.

Billboard's Geoff Mayfield explained the reason behind turning down the record label’s proposal of ‘Thriller 25’ as a current album.

"We were approached by Sony and Sony BMG to consider Thriller 25 as a current album. But we had to be consistent with hundreds, if not thousands, of reissues that have come to the market,” Mayfield said.

“There have actually been new issues of classic albums that include even more new material. We didn't just make the decision on our own. We contacted major retailers and that was the consensus.

"I always understand when people are disappointed when they don't show as high up on the chart, or on the chart they wanted. It's the largest sum for an album on the catalogue chart to be sold in 10 years," Mayfield added. (ANI)

Michael Jackson's "Thriller" Re-Release Left Off Charts, Experts Explain Why

Michael Jackson's Thriller album is technically number two on this week's Billboard charts but it won't be credited as such due to a technicality.
According to New York's Daily News, even though Jackson's 25th anniversary album sold 166,000 copies this week, according to Nielsen's SoundScan, Billboard categorized the album as a catalogue- or oldies album, making it uneligible for inclusion in the Billboard 200.

Jackson's label, Sony, argues that this should not be the case because in addition to classic hits like "Billie Jean" and "Beat It," the album also contains six new songs.

One label source explains, "Michael went into the studio and recorded with Kanye West, Fergie, Akon, Will.i.Am - and there's a brand-new song from Michael, and videos. It beat Grammy winners Amy Winehouse and Herbie Hancock, with 167,000 crossing the counter. Yet for reasons unfathomable to folks in the music industry, Billboard has decided to relegate it to the catalogue chart. Catalogue makes it look like the same ol' same ol', but with a "new cover."

According to Billboard chart expert, Geoff Mayfield, "We were approached by Sony and Sony BMG to consider 'Thriller 25' as a current album. But we had to be consistent with hundreds, if not thousands, of reissues that have come to the market. There have actually been new issues of classic albums that include even more new material. We didn't just make the decision on our own. We contacted major retailers [like Wal-Mart and Best Buy], and that was the consensus."

Still Mayfield adds that Jackson should find comfort in knowing, "It's the largest sum for an album on the catalogue chart to be sold in 10 years."

The latest news in the world of Billboard's definitive sales and airplay charts.

Michael Jackson's "Thriller 25" is the highest-charting catalog album in the history of the comprehensive survey.

February 21, 2008,
Fred Bronson
KING OF POP (CATALOG): In its original run, Michael Jackson's "Thriller" was on The Billboard 200 for 122 weeks, 37 of which were spent at No. 1.

With the re-entry of a silver anniversary edition, the rechristened "Thriller 25" (Legacy/Epic) is in its 112th week on the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart and is No. 1 on that tally for the first time.

"Thriller" debuted on The Billboard 200 the week of Dec. 25, 1982. The album made its first appearance on the catalog chart the week of Nov. 14, 1992, entering at No. 42. It didn't reach the top 10 until the week of Feb. 27, 1993, when it leapt 26-2. It remained No. 2 the following week but never equaled or surpassed that ranking until this week.

The re-entry of "Thriller" puts the classic album back on the catalog chart for the first time since the week of May 12, 2007.

There aren't many 49-year-old performers who can say they have been on the Billboard charts for almost 40 years, but Michael can. As a member of the Jackson 5, he made his chart debut the week of Nov. 15, 1969, when "I Want You Back" bowed on The Billboard Hot 100. That gives Michael a career chart span of 38 years, three months and two weeks.

A final note: on the Top Comprehensive Albums chart, where catalog titles mix with current best-sellers, "Thriller 25" debuts at No. 2, runner-up to Jack Johnson's "Sleep Through the Static" (Brushfire), which is also No. 1 on The Billboard 200. "Thriller 25" is the highest-charting catalog album in the history of the comprehensive survey.

I have always believed Michael's "The Lost Children" song was
underated. I'm so glad to see this song getting the recognition and understanding it deserves.

Re: MJ Weekend News Roundup Feb. 22-24, 2008 **Billboard Chart Roundup**

It's not the top 200. Billboard has many charts (confusing, yes). Don't ask me what the hell is the Comprehensive chart. I ani't heard of it before...

Anyone's ever seen this chart and what the difference is between it and the Top 200???

I've never seen the chart, but considering it's called "comprehensive", I'll take a guess that it means the chart is inclusive of all music, regardless of chart title...meaning it includes the Hot 200 (current music) AND the Catalog chart. It's based purely on sales and not category? That may explain why Thriller would be in 2nd place.

Thanks to all for posting news and chart updates. :flowers: Michael should definitely be proud of himself regardless of the Billboard foolishness. I know I'm as proud of him as many other fans are. Heck, I would've been proud at top 20 or top 10 showing, but this is just phenomenal...all things considered. Amazing job! Can't wait to see what else is in store for this re-release campaign. :punk:

Well, the "Comprehensive Charts" would be the Billboard 200, if they wouldn't have that "older albums out" policy! So it's basically the Billboard 200 and Top Pop Catalog put back together!

Sorry if this has already been posted.

Amy Winehouse (Universal Republic) will continue to feel the Grammy effect with 45-50k, putting the retro-soulster in a battle with Michael Jackson’s updated Thriller reissue (Sony Legacy) and Sheryl Crow (A&M/Interscope), all trending toward 45-50k.

Are they mad because now they will have to audit and certify Thriller in the US?
Finnally ending the non sense about the Eagle Greatest Hits being No. 1(US).
