I have the album with that cover pic, but the track listing is exactly the same as the Classic Jackson 5 album you mention. The bar code is the same, too. Maybe it was just a different marketing ploy? Dunno really.

There is an interesting article about the Steeltown recordings, a group called Ripples and Waves which was NOT the Jackson 5, but tried to copy them. The propaganda of Steeltown Records at the time made people believe that the Ripples and Waves recordings were early J5 recordings and that Ripples and Waves were there original name, but it wasn't true. But it made so much confusion that at the end it even confused Motown and that's why they named this album Ripples and Waves: An Introduction to the J5.

Here is the article, it's long but interesting: http://www.chicagonow.com/and-the-o...-really-discovered-michael-and-the-jackson-5/

And this is the relevant part:

The Ripples & Waves single had already fooled others, most
notably Jackson biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli, but Pre-History redoubled the problem. Because Brown, as a
Steeltown founder, was in a position to know the truth, his involvement made the
album's false claims that much more persuasive. The resulting flood of
misinformation still clogs not just message boards, online forums, and wikis but
print accounts as well. In 2000 Motown/Universal even released a compilation of
early Motown material titled Ripples and Waves: An
Introduction to the Jackson Five, which prompted Keith and his nephew
Elvy Woodard (a Ripple) to sue the Jacksons for infringement on the Ripples
& Waves name. Keith says the suit was settled in part by several Jackson
brothers--Michael not among them--making a DVD in which they personally
apologize
.

Yeah Respect is right. This came to light a few years ago. Ripples & Waves were basically a Jackson impersonator group. Not really but they had a similar sound, and a kid lead singer just like the Jacksons. Steeltown, I guess feeling shafted by Motown signing their prodigy, recorded Ripple & Waves and labeled some of the finished pieces as The Jackson 5. Those songs were officially recognized by some discographer's until this arose a few years ago and the dupe was exposed. The steel town Jacksons album, released after Michael died, called Pre-History or something like that, also features a couple of Ripple & Waves songs.

Correction on my behalf. PRE-HIStory was released the same year Michael released HIStory. My bad, I think it may have been reissued after Michaels death. But I have no source for that other than my own memory.
