Hey, I have a question. Did that viral video of lady trying to induce a labour while dancing to Thriller make Thriller to chart:D

Bubs

New member
I wonder how much long Thriller is going to be on 29xP or isn't time to certify it 30xP?

HIStory

I think it's long passed the 30 million mark. But it's up to the record label to ask for an update in the certification.

Respect, I tried to find the original article or post from OFFICIAL CHARTS COMPANY but couldn't find it?

Bubs

There is no "article". It's from this chart geek's forum where they make all kind of calculations etc: http://www.ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=63110&p=5508681

Hence: "Thanks Pierpinto"

This bit threw me off the rails
OFFICIAL CHARTS COMPANY (UK)
MOST SUCCESSFUL UK CHART ACTS
AS OF 19TH FEBRUARY, 2015

There is an Official Charts Company in UK (http://www.officialcharts.com/home/)
so I thought that came from them, which would have made that list "Official", but as that list comes from Pierpinto, it is not "official" in a sense, and I don't think it is ok to use Official Charts Company in the headline:-( It is kind of misleading, but ok, I know now it is from Pierpinto's own "official" chart.

I guess it just means he took the data from the official charts. He explained his calculation method:

Calculated by the amount of weeks on the chart for both Singles and Albums combined. One point is gained for each week an album/or single appears in the Top 75:

Are these numbers official?? - And if so, why are Thriller and BAD not certified better?

ALSO - if Thriller had already sold 67 million copies in 1990. - then it seems realistic that Thriller has now sold (25 years later!) around 100 million copies. - In 1990 many propably still had Thriller on MC (tape) or LP - they have maybe bought a CD version later, and maybe also 2001 special edition and T25.

^ These are global numbers which are never "official" the same way as RIAA certifications are considered "official". There is no official certification for global sales, they are simply counted together from single national sales numbers.

And these are not the sales for 1990, these are the sales for now.

Those numbers are not number of copies sold in the 80s, but total number of copies sold of albums released in the 80s.

Nothing new. This is their list from February 2013:

Thriller 66 MIL
Bad 32 MIL
Dangerous 30 MIL

So is that officially Dangerous is only 2 million behind Bad?

Amazing that he has 5 out of 6 adult studio albums in that list. A stunning achievement.

Like respect77 said there are no official numbers for global sales because there is no official organisation that counts global sales, but it is the only reliable source for global sales and it is considered pretty accurate. So it's not official official, but it is as close as it can be.

Yeah, MJ has 5/6 studio albums on Albums All Time Chart and 3 albums in Albums Decade Chart

http://www.mediatraffic.de/2000-2009-album-chart.htm

40. Michael Jackson - Thriller (including 25th Anniversary Reissue) - 10 million copies
53. Michael Jackson - Number Ones - 9 million copies
97. Michael Jackson - Invincible - 7 million copies

Wow, I thought Invincible had surpassed 10 million in its first year?

The drop from 20m to 7 is staggering. But I guess US sales count for most of that.

Number 97 in the decade sounds way too low.

Yeah, but like I said, they are reliable, but not 100%. I think Invincible sold more (around 13 MIL). Thriller should be around 70 MIL by now. Off The Wall and HIStory stand on 20 MIL since I have internet! Same for Dangerous - 30 MIL. Joe Vogel wrote that Bad sold 35 MIL in 2012 and he had direct contact with Estate. So all these numbers should be taken with a grain of salt. They are just best possible approximations and not official numbers.

Every time a MJ albums appears on the 200 list I wonder if that's because of a promotion stunt or just because people really love his album?

Thriller, Number Ones and Essential are regularly on the Billboard 200. No promotion or "stunt". What kind of stunt and promotion would it be if not even the fandom knows about it? And all the time?

I know that Number Ones, Essential and Thriller are regularly on the 200. But it's not common that you see Bad on the Billboard 200. I was just wondering if there was a particular occasion that got Bad on the 200 list...

Oh, OK, I get it.
I have no idea why it's Bad now, but I'm glad if his other albums besides Thriller also get some attention.

Anyone have any idea why Thriller has re-entered the UK top 40 album chart at number 39?

I see the UK now has a weekly vinyl albums chart...sadly no sign of MJ on there as yet.....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The UK's first weekly vinyl chart has been launched by the Official Charts Company as sales of vinyl albums and singles continue to soar.
Despite predictions that CDs - then MP3s and streaming - would render vinyl obsolete, sales reached an 18-year high in 2014, at 1.29 million. Figures show sales of vinyl albums are set to grow by another 70% this year.
Chasing Yesterday by Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds is 2015's biggest-selling vinyl album so far.
The weekly vinyl albums and singles charts, published on the Official Charts Company website, are being introduced ahead of Record Store Day on 18 April.

The first official vinyl albums chart is topped by All Time Low's Future Hearts - echoing the week's UK album chart broadcast on BBC Radio 1 yesterday.
In the first official vinyl singles chart the number one spot was taken by Underworld vs Heller & Farley's track Baby Wants to Ride.
The charts company said it was responding to "the huge surge of interest" that has seen vinyl sales climb from a low of 0.1% of the albums market in 2007 (205,000) to 1.5% in 2014 (1.29m).

"Yes, it's still a small part of the business," admitted chief executive Martin Talbot.
"But what makes this so unusual is that usually you see new formats arrive and grow in popularity, reach their peak and then they decline and kind of disappear.
"Here you've got something that has grown in popularity back in the 60s and 70s, declined in popularity through the 80s and 90s, got right the way down to the bottom and then started climbing back out again."

It most probably would have been because of the Thriller album documentary shown on ITV very recently :)

No. The documentary was shown after. Thriller is a regular presence on the charts so there does not really have to be any reason for this.

The PPL People's Artist Chart 2014
British music had a fantastic 2014, with three of the top five most played artists being from the UK. Coldplay's new material, the emergence of Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran's return all resulted in domestic success, but it is 2014's Queen of Pop Katy Perry who reigns supreme at number one. Her two huge hits 'Roar' and 'Dark Horse' in particular received significant airplay throughout 2014, taking her to the top of this chart.

1. Katy Perry
2. Coldplay
3. Ed Sheeran
4. Sam Smith
5. OneRepublic
6. Rihanna
7. Clean Bandit
8. Avicii
9. Olly Murs
10. Michael Jackson

Yes I too, it is on the BB200 since weeks or maybe month. On the time of Bad 25-release it hasn`t had this popularity. On the other hand Thriller is out now since a longer time.

Based on mid-year data the four albums sold a very similar amount in the first half of 2015 with Thriller still being on top.

Considering the poor general record sales, selling 231,000 copies of albums in half a year without any promotion is very good. Projecting that to a year that would be almost 500,000 copies. With no promotion, no anniversary, now new release. That's very good IMO.

No joke. I would think that current artists releasing new music would be gnashing their teeth in jealousy. Pretty amazing to me. Love it, though.
