What does Janet do/have better than MJ?

Though no one can touch the talent that Michael Jackson has, there have been a few things that Janet has done, and/or people she's worked with that I just wish Michael would do..

1) Though Mike works with the best choeographers etc.. I have always thought Janet has the best back-up dancers.. They are all individually talented. Have unique styles, and can stand there own, on there own.

2) I have always thought that Janets tour set designs, lighting designs etc.. Are the BEST.. Some staging ideas, along with lighting, and set designs have been SO CREATIVE.. They give a flat large area to do the major performing, yet have these cool demesions to them to make things stand out so much...


These are two things, that I wish Michael would have.. I would love for Michael to work with Janets back-up dancers and her tour designers.. Her's in my opinion have been untouchable..

I am going to attempt to answer this, but I might need wannbe's help on this.
1. MJ's stage design are his creation. He decides where the lighting should be and why they go where.
2. MJ's backup dangcer are proffessionals, but MJ is so good that he makes them look ordinary.
I watched Janet danced with her backup dancers and my eyes wander around to see all the dancers behind her. I saw dancers that I liked better than Janet.
When MJ dances, you don't want to take your eyes off him for fear that you might miss something. That is the difference between the 2 I think.

Janet doesn't do anything better than Michael. Her backing dancers appear to dance better than Michael's because, their not dancing with Michael as every dancer no matter how good they are looks rubbish when Michael is dancing near them.

I like Janet, though I'm not a fan. I went to her Velvet Rope Tour in 1998 which was really good, but it was in many ways a rip off of the History Tour. Like Madonna, Janet needs backing dancers on stage all the time in tight choreographed dance routines. Because unlike Michael, Janet and Madonna don't have the talent or stage presence to command the stage on there own like Michael.

She is highly limited and isn't built right for dancing. Michael's backup dancers are all trained professionals, save for the poppers and lockers he sometimes features, who more often then not are relugated to their own dance troop, away from the professionals. Michael simply moves better then any of them and thus makes them look ordinary. They don't have his grace, his speed, his accuracy or his clean lines. Put them with Janet and they would look much, much better, as Datsymay said. But watch them in "Thriller", "Smooth Criminal", "Remember The Time", "Beat It", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "Bad", the "Dangerous" routine, "Black Or White", "Captain EO", etc... Almost all of the dancer's are excellent and highly talented. They make their living off of dancing alone and they are conditioned dancers, having studied and practiced to become that almost all their lives. Michael is just so naturally gifted that, even without training, he makes them look average. Shoot, he did it to the Nicholas Brothers when he danced with them on those variety shows. He had more grace and was more accurate then the two of them.

As for stage show, Janet's show looks typical to me of any pop act's these days. Michael introduced the idea of a big, extravaganza type of stage show, with multiple lighting effects, pyro and illusion tricks. Michael's show may be more simple, but Janet along with every other act got the idea of big budget, intricately involved stagging from Michael.

I don't usually say this but I gotta disagree with sum of the things ur saying.. Janets dancers are some of the most respected dancers in the dance industry. Some are celebs on there own right. The only good back up dancers mj uses ok stage are his co-choegraphers. When I say this I strictly am talking about tour dancers.. The dancers he gets for most if his vids are much better than janets.. I think mike should get much better dancers in the back..

Janet was using those elaborate stage designs much before these young people today have..

Miles performance is so much better than janets, but janet does get some great ppl to work with her.. Aside for her actual music lately. LOL

I agree with Datsay may! Michael in my opinion doesn't need a major set design to make his show great, because his talent overshadows all of that! I mean Janet is good, but Mike's got her beat on every level! Even Janet herself knows this & she has said this numerous times!

I absolutely agree! Janet can dance, but she's not a natural dancer like Michael is IMO!! He's a dancer in his soul, she is choreographed, it doesn't come natural to her, she has to work her ass off! For Michael, it's like Sis boom ba, it's there perfectly!

Well I would say Michael's live dancers are very good. They're professionally trained and are very capable. Lavelle Smith isn't as good as some of them, to be honest. And he's a choreographer. Most good dancer's aren't well known outside of dance, it's a fact of the industry and even some of the best dancers aren't known at all. You've probably never heard the names of half the dancer's in "West Side Story", for example, unless you're involved in Broadway, etc... Choreographers get far more attention. He usually only has 3 main dancers on stage with him anyway, but all of them are good, trained dancers. Hearing of them isn't an indicator of their ability. His dancers that he's used for "Dangerous" live have all been excellent. His dancers that he used during his one performance of "Remember the Time" were excellent, as were his dancer's for "TWYMMF" live and his dancers during the 30th Anniversary show.

I said Janet got the big stage production idea from Michael, and she did. She's been around longer then any of the acts today, but Michael basically revolutionized the inception of having a stage show that's more like a happening.

well of course it started with MJ.. MJ likes simplicity when it comes to staging, etc.. Even his outfits.. He choses ONE primary outfit to where, and throughs on a jacket, takes one off etc.. Aside from styleized performances like Dangerous and Billie Jean.. etc..

He likes the traditional 'proscenium stage'.. Which I like, but I like additions to that. Yes in the middle of the stage he ads a little ramp, which is derived from the 'Thrust Stage' idea.

I would just like to see a little more demension to his stage.. ALWAYS keeping the base being proscenium style, but other demensions added to it.. With his imagination he could use it crazy.. You know how he likes to add magic tricks to his shows.. Picture him disapearing and appearing on a small 'Arena stage', like a (7 by 6), or round style. in the middle of the stadium/arena.. Getting a full 360 shot of him..

I agree that her stage sets are very impressive. The "Velvet Rope" tour is one of the best and most creative tours i've ever seen. Now as for who's a better dancer, I think Michael is a better dancer and is more of a natural, but Janet is great as well and her choreography is more diverse than Michael's and also I have to say that she was better in the video for "Scream" than he was, her dancing, her attitude, just everything was on point. One thing about Janet that I've always noticed is that she seems a lot more open than Michael and comes across as more approachable and honest in interviews than he does.

And one things for sure, she's been better at keeping her private life private and doesn't get caught up in drama like Mike does. With the exception of the Superbowl, she doesn't get caught up in scandals, doesn't get sued all the time all the time either and basically she's handled her career/personal life much better than MJ has.

I don't agree with that. Michael has given so many long format interviews which have basically consisted of free range questions from a semi-controlled to an uncontrolled environment. He has always come across well in interviews and his popularity has always shot up whenever he's given them. He comes across as funny, warm, kind, sweet, intelligent and mature and he promotes smart and well intentioned subjects. The Bashir interview was edited and spliced to make Michael look bad, and he also at that time was having some difficulties on a personal level. But you watch him in interviews from his one with Oprah, to his one with Diane Sawyer, Steve Harvey, to his one with Geraldo and then with Jesse Jackson, he was wonderful, charismatic and likeable and while he restraines himself from ever becoming irate with interviewers, he never has backed down or become evasive when asked a question of a controversial nature or one which could be seen as a bait question, but rather became defensive, while still polite, not backing down from his ideals and thought process. I always wonder what people are talking about when they say Michael isn't approachable. Because while he IS private, he is also humble and seems held down by normal human inhibitions. His shyness, for example, his difficulty in taking a compliment, his appreciation for his success, etc... He seems down to earth and grounded. People blame Michael for their own actions against him. They say that it's his fault that they attack him because he isn't "real" with them, but that notion is ridiculous to me. They attack him because they're scared of him, because they can't dissect him or put him in a box and because he represents change and is someone who, with his presence, causes people to face their shortcomings and live to a higher standard. But Michael not wanting to air his personal business in public, business such as his love life, his financial state, his health, and his unwillingness to talk badly of others in public, is not Michael being evasive, its Michael simply desiring the same courtesy extended to every normal human being.

Also, I wouldn't say Janet has handled her personal life better. To say that, we would actually have to be in their personal lives, which we aren't. Maybe her public life, yes, but that's all we can judge.

To compare them as dancers is really an implausible comparison. He's a much, much better dancer, and you brought up "Scream", it's in that video we have the only clip of them dancing side by side, save for the Jackson’s Variety Shows, and he clearly out dances her. Her dancing in that video was weak, in my view, she was without a choreographed routine throughout most of it and her movement seems lackluster and sloppy in comparison to Michael's. She had attitude, but she lacked Michael's intensity. She's made more music videos then he has, and in almost every one, she's followed a choreographed routine. The majority of Michael's videos have featured free style dancing, thus the reason for her more diverse or varied dance sequences. Michael often just moves to the music in his videos or is told to hit certain spots and do what he feels once he gets there. It isn't all planned out all the time.

Could it be that she is boring and nobody is really interested in her private life? I have bought a book on JJ and I put it down and haven't bothered to read it. I have read books by MJ, Katherine and LaToya. I find Janet very bland.

I totally agree, and besides wasn't Janet's 'Rythem Nation' military type dance routine and style originally michaels idea, but he let janet have it for rythem nation.

also again, nothing is wrong with michaels back up dancers, michael is so loose and flexible, he makes any dancer look stiff. i dont know maybe if he had some new york street dancers (where he got alot of his moves) up there with him it would look different? because they can moveeeeee slick like him. but anyway i cant see anything missing from michaels performances. alot of modern dancers have bad learning techniques these days though, they need to go back to actually feeling the music like michael does. example: the band nsync danced lame. thats how alot of people are taught to dance now. wheres the james browns, michaels.
