Hello, I've just been wondering, what does it mean to be a Moonwalker? Just being a fan? Favourite singer? Knowing every fact? Many people see it differently, and I am now a bit confused 😂

Michael Jackson fans do not really need a name for their collective fanbase.

They are just his fans.

Besides, Moonwalkers (as a collective name for his fanbase) sounds laughable.

Michael Jackson himself also never called his fans Moonwalkers.

Yes, I know that. Whatever you guys may call yourselves, moonwalker, soldier of love, just MJ fans, what do you think defines it? I think that just having a love for all of him is enough, but I'm wondering if anyone has other opinions.

Thank you!!!! I have been a fan for over 30 years. I would never allow somebody to refer to me as a "Moonwalker" or a "Soldier of love"!

Being a true fan to me is about enjoying the music and appreciating the man as an artist. More importantly, knowing the facts and understanding the person that he really was.

We are blessed to be alive in an era where Michael Jackson existed.

Yeah, I don't even like the word "fan"... there are people who only enjoy his music on one end of the scale and real fanatics on the other one. Doesn't matter, really... the only ones I don't like are the ones who think they are "better" fans because of XYZ ...get a life 😂

My definition of a Michael Jackson fan is that you enjoy his art AND love and respect the man enough to care about him. If you just like the music but not the man, then you are a casual listener, you are a fan of music, not a fan of Michael Jackson. There are hundreds of artists whose music I enjoy, but I wouldn't call myself a fan, because I don't really have any interest in them beyond listening to the music.

well I guess it's up to you to decide : ) I mean, to me, it means being a huge fan of M and being a huge fan of M means that he is my favorite singer (which he is) knowing every fact (which I do and i'm always learning new things about him) listening to as many songs as I could get my hands on ect. but the main part is that his music / he makes you happy. because that was mike's goal was to bring people together through his music and make them happy : )

That's an interesting point for me. I wrote, I don't like the term "fan".

I often hear people say they are a fan of something/someone and for them it means they like the music of someone or the attitude, or (insert whatever). And I also connect this word to 13 year old screaming kids (no offense, I would have done the same and would do the same today probably. Or just faint, whatever 😂).

What I wanted to express: I feel like most Michael "fans" feel a really deep connection to him on a personal basis. At least, when you're not only interested in his music. So the word "fan" doesn't cover that for me. I feel like he is part of my life, more like a family member or a really good friend. The word "fan" puts some kind of gap between this connection. Don't know if that's understandable. That's just my feeling about the word "fan".

Would like your guys opinion on that. And no judgement, of course - like I wrote there are no "better" or "worse" fans, just various types.

By my definition, a Moonwalker is an extremely dedicated fan of Michael Jackson who should AT LEAST have these qualities:

1. A Moonwalker should respect Michael Jackson as a human being. Moonwalkers don't stand for ANY mockery or slandering of Michael's name. A moonwalker wouldn't laugh at insensitive parodies or jokes about him (we only laugh at the idiots who make such jokes), and speaking of slander...

2. A Moonwalker knows that Michael Jackson is innocent of all of the criminal charges made against him. I understand that there are some casual listeners, and even so-called fans, who doubt his innocence, but if you were a true Moonwalker, you would know that the man was incapable of doing anything criminal.

3. A Moonwalker should respect Michael Jackson as an artist. A true Moonwalker knows that Michael Jackson is a timeless legend, and they would not support or listen to artists that disrespect him. Moonwalkers would not support people (that we know of) who have backstabbed him. Also, a true Moonwalker would not support songs sung by impersonators that try to pass themselves off as him (*cough cough*).

And this last one is a big one, (don't hate me for this) but I feel that a true Moonwalker wouldn't listen to unfinished songs that were completely remixed posthumously. Again, this goes back to respecting him as an artist. Listening to songs released posthumously is already a very controversial topic for me because he is no longer alive to approve what is being released. I have honestly stopped listening to his posthumous songs for the most part, even the songs that were not remixed. I feel that listening to posthumous Jackson 5 songs are not as bad because most of them seem finished, Michael didn't have much control over them anyway, and there were many songs released by Motown after he left the company that were arguably worse than the posthumous albums (e.g. Farewell, My Summer Love, Boogie). In fact, Michael bought the "Pre-History" CD with Steeltown tracks, and some may not know this, but there's actually a couple of songs up there that are not even sung by The Jackson 5! But anyway, to have some awful producer remix the songs that he worked so hard on in an attempt to "modernize" them, and then have the song sold as a "new" Michael Jackson song, is against my principles. Now, if a little mixing or remastering was done to improve the quality, while retaining all of the original elements, then I'm fine with that. But I DO NOT support those trash remixes on Xscape, and especially Michael.

4. Finally, I think ALL Moonwalkers should at least have a basic knowledge of Michael Jackson and his music. I don't expect them to know every fact about him (even I don't) but at least know his most significant songs, short films, and such.

So yeah, everyone has their own definition, but this is what I believe a true Moonwalker is.

Edit: I know that many of you have different names for his fanbase (e.g. Moonwalkers, Soldiers of Love), But whatever you want to call yourself, I feel that true fans deeply admire Michael Jackson's music AND him as a person. If you just like his music, but don't like him, I say you are a casual listener. If you like his music and like him but still support those who disrespect him, then I say you're a casual fan. Also, I know that there are a lot of listeners who enjoy the posthumous remixes, but I feel that if you don't listen to that posthumous stuff, you've reached the ultimate level of fanhood so to speak! And, of course, he should probably be your favorite musical artist (I know he's mine)!

I think you said it best @someplace_else! A TRUE Michael Jackson fan feels that he is a close family member or friend! I feel that way about Michael Jackson, and Janet Jackson too for that matter!

Thank you, best response yet 💜

Except when he was parking his car. According to Marlon, Michael got a lot of parking tickets cause he would park ANYWHERE. 🤣 That smooth criminal...

a true Moonwalker wouldn't listen to unfinished songs that were completely remixed posthumously.
I listen to them while complaining loudly about them not releasing the original version, is that okay?
