Why was Janet Jackson's Superbowl boob slip such a serious issue?

Wow This thread went off topic quick seems there is a baitor making rounds.

How, pray tell, is it off-topic? I think it's been expanded upon, certainly, but the original topic of why the media seemed to make such a large issue out of something which shouldn't have even made the news is still at the center of the discussion. It's not like we're talking about pink unicorns or something equally unrelated. We are very much having a debate, and I think it's completely excellent that we are able to hold such debates on MJJC.

I'm curious as to why you seem to make such statements, yet provide no examples to justify your claims, or support your rationale.

My opinion: because of the puritanical heritage of the US. We glorify and accept violence and vilify sexuality, esp women's sexuality (though with very mixed messages, as more and more skin and raciness becomes commonplace). I think it was compounded by the fact that Janet came from a famous family and made public appearances since childhood, plus the fact that people expect from "general audiences" entertainment from the Superbowl. It wasn't a big deal to me, though I think it probably wasn't the time and place for such a stunt. I find it unfortunate that Janet was hurt by the scandal more than Justin.

Why was Janet Jackson's Superbowl boob slip such a serious issue?
cuz it was a cheap publicity stunt that offended basic family values on a show where families would be watching.

I remember someone saying that so much uproar should have ONLY been if he had pulled down her pants, leaving her naked vagina exposed to the world, not for a boob that was fucking half covered any way by a pasty!

And what made it very bad is that most of the time Janet has to apologize for it and not Justin. But it was Justin who did that and not Janet herself.

Justin could easily move on wiht his life but not Janet.

Yeah, no big deal really. Just the media hyping things up.

What I do found interesting and makes me think this was staged is the fact that she had that little thinggy on her nipple. It didn't look like a piercing to me, looked more like something that was supposed to be there because they were supposed to flash her tit.

Again, this is also nothing that would make one rage out in fury. I just found that thing on her nipple a little... rondom.

I'm glad Janet didn't apologize why should she? she didn't do anything wrong, Justin was the one who messed up, you can clearly see Janet's red lace bra under her costume.
It was a shame that Janet's career took the blow and not Justin's, Damita Jo was a good album, not her best but not by any standards rubbish, 20YO wasn't very good, but that's a different story.
At that time in Janet's life she had a glimpse of what MJ's life was like, with the media totally against him. Like MJ said the press love bad news, its sad but he was 100% right...

lol... i don't buy that for a sec, it was planned and meant to happen but it backfired big time.. well too bad.
given it was blown way outta proportion but ppl move on, so it don't matter.

I think too it was planned. Janet got a drawing of a star on the specific boob, if I remember well. Why drawing it if you do not want to show it?

Also the outfit looked kinda vulgar, like playboy thing... I didn't like the way she dressed...

However I think it was blown out of proportion, and it was ridiculous to see how media can come out with big scandal out of this.

No, but it was unnecessary and kind of stupid. In any case, both sides are at fault. Janet and Justin for (most likely) staging the whole thing as a cheap publicity attempt, and the FCC and media watch groups for making such a big deal out of something so stupid and harmless.

yes, I agree.

And the moment was not only tacky becuase they obviously staged it, but it was at a moment when Mike was struggling with big problems... that was kinda sad.. I was saddened by this at that time...

Of course, it was planned and meant to happen. Janet just didn't know that the public would turn on her like that. She was so used to the media and public kissing her ass and them forgiving her for anything, she thought she could get away with it. Never in a million years did she think that it would backfire like it did. It really pissed me off that people got mad at Justin Timberlake when it was Janet who PLANNED the whole thing. Even some of her brothers knew that she was going to pull that crap and were laughing and saying that janet had a "surprise" for everyone. You don't wear a specially designed nipple ring if you plan to show it off. Wardrobe malfunction, my a.s.s.

I said the same thing, too. Like one poster said, I think because she's Michael Jackson' younger sister.

I don't think the whole thing was plan...JT was supposed to pull of some sort of fabric of her breast (not the whole thing). She looked genuinely shocked when the incident occured.

If you believe that, I have some lake-front property to sell you. The whole thing was planned by Janet. If the public and media hadn't reacted the way that they did, she would have been reveling in her glory and attention. Not even for an instance did I ever think that this was a malfunction or accident. It was planned.

I found the star on the nipple thing kind of odd.. if she wasn't planning on flashing it, why put the pastie and the star there?

I'm sorry, but Janet planned the whole thing ?? please ! if it was a publicity stunt, which I don't believe, Janet most certainly didn't 'plan' the whole thing. It really pissed me off that they didn't get mad at Justin, even if Janet 'planned' it as you say, he still agreed to do it, so he's just as much at fault !!

The brothers saying she had a surprise means nothing, they could have been talking about her great performance, or that she was going to be on with Justin during Rock Your Body.
If it was planned, I don't think Janet would have made such a big deal about apologizing.

raz,

you're obviously a big Janet fan ( LOL...) I honestly don't know if it was planned or not but I was kind of happy that something like that happened to her so she could get an inkling of the crap her brother went through. Janet was always pro-media, and she talked with them and gave them what they wanted and they still turned on her after the Superbowl incident. So I was kind of glad that she got a taste of what Michael had been through for the past 20 years

I am, but I'm a MJ fan first !! and I've said it before, that what happened to Janet was what MJ went through on a daily basis, but just like MJ she didn't deserve it. The point I am making is that even if it was planned Justin should have taken just the amount of crap Janet got for it, its very well saying it was Janet's plan but at the end of the day he could easily have said no.

^ Justine was alomst a kid AND Janet was the biggest star with professional PR team , do u think that he was able to say no or why or WTF ???

also , since her brother was facing sexual allegations , did she have to show that the whole family are perverts !! honestly Janet made the biggest mistake not just against herself but against MJ too !

of course she did, she planned it from the beginning to the end, she just never imagined it would backfire on her old ass the way it did, I hate how justin got off of this incident and Janet got crucified for it, although I dislike Janet very much that wasnt fair, and yes it was the mj connection, while janet had to bleed for this, justin who during that time was the media's new wanna be michael jackson got off by putting out a fake apoligy, I'm not even sure if he had to apologize at all.
I'm glad timberfake's hype has vanished he built a career upon copying and selling out.
if he hadnt been britney spears' boyfriend 90 per cent of this world wouldnt even be able to tell the difference between him and some of his boy group member pals .

Imo I don't think it was planned , her reaction afterwards does not seemed planned , inside editon showed footage someone shoot after the lights went out and the camera stopped shooting, and they were leaving the stage, and Janet looked absoutly humilated , you could see Justin trying to calm her down and sercurity guard had to calm her down and escort her off the stage. and that was before the media even gave there two cents , and the audience wasn't booing either, so I don't think Janet was waiting around for media approval.

and that's the part why everybody says Justin threw under her the bus not because he apologized ( and I don't even think Justin realizes this why people were saying that) , the fact is he gave a interview right after it happend happy and all gidy ,it was a worbrobe malfuction, and we love giving something to talk about . than a another interview a couple days before the grammys after all the media scrunity his tune changed a complete 180 , than it was I had nothing to do with , didn't know it happened, my mom was watching, I was horrified by it, and he clearly made it seemed exactly like Janet planned the whole thing and he didn't know nothing about it and like he was set up. I don't know if he did that because Janet apologized , but either way they should of talked to each other but Justin should of realized that it wasn't planned by her reaction alone.

Are parents that worried that their children will be corrupted by seeing a breast? I mean we see billboards and magazine covers with half naked women all the time and that doesn't do anything bad to our minds :S

I think a lot of parents try to scapegoat social problems away from their abusive parenting.
People like to make a mountain out of a molehill. It happened so fast alot of viewers didn't catch it until the media started to slow it down and replay it a million times like they did with Michael when he was showing Blanket to the fans over the blacony. This was an accident, if it was planned Janet wopuld not have looked so shocked and she would not have covered herself when she noticed something went wrong. Alot of people even forget that it was Justin Timberlake who pulled the piece of clothing off, he completely disregarded any responsibility untill last year when he said he felt bad for not coming to her defense.

There are worse thigns in the media than a nipple, most people children included have seen a nipple. It is indecent exposure but there are far more provocative magazine covers and advertisements.

I would've said it was'nt planned too, but given what Justin Timberlake said as he exited the stage to I think Access hollywood, he sure made it seem as though it was planned. It was after the whole thing hit the fan did he start to backtrack and left Janet holding the bag.

How could you be happy about someone going through something like that? I mean really you think Michael was happy that she had to go through that? I knew the old you would show up eventually

Good point!

Okay, lets for arguements sake, Justin was only supposed to pull of the fabric just to reveal her bra? why did Janet need to go there? why was that pasty on her breast if something was not to be revealed? whatever the 'plan' it got out of control and if she was'nt determined to push her sexy side once more, none of this would've happened.

I thought that advertisers like to have a 'large audience draw' for the Superbowl entertainment (so folk at home don't go off and make a coffee or whatever and keep watching the TV). I'm guessing the slip was intended to be entertaining but didn't quite hit the right note for a family show (even if the audience is probably largely male? by which I mean a certain amount of 'raunchiness' is expected ref. even female classical musicians have to dress a little provocatively to 'sell' their music nowadays ..) Once a negative bandwagon starts rolling, everyone else seems to join in. There's supposed to be no such thing as bad publicity, but I think with the Jackson family they are the exception that 'proves' the rule, so to speak. (ie 'bad publicity' seems to stick to them like glue.)

I don't think she planned it... The same for Justin. I think too much of that piece came off. She and jt looked horribly shocked, I think if she did it on purpose her reaction would have been different. Also by this time she had already been doing strip tease on stage in concert.
I dont like to think this way, but i think her last name had something to do with it. The media was looking for something to bash her about and then they found it. I know they were having a field-day with their Jackson bash fest.
N that was a nipple ring not a pastie. A pas tie covers the whole nipple... N the ring she had on went around it.

I only became of Janet after MJ died, my room is full of MJ stuff, not Janet stuff. I'll deny it all I want, you don't know me. Defending Janet from all the crap you guys say about her doesn't make me less of an MJ fan, I've been an MJ fan for 16 years, since the day I was born!

I do think it was kinda planned!? But, I don't know why!? I think at the time she wanted attention away from the MJ Bashit scandal? But, it backfired! Cause well, she is a Jackson and the media was on MJ HATER mode bigger then before! Her career never really been the same since! Nope!

Plus, it was a black girl's boob too! Yes, I believe very much it was racist the way the media acted, also cause she was female as well! And I could not stand Justin wanna be ass more cause of it! He got off as if he wasn't the one who exposed her!

I guess his McDonald's contract and stuff was more important then his "Friendship" with Janet!, Damn traitor! At first he was like that's what I do, then acted like he did nothing!

I think the outrage went overboard but I do understand the initial reaction. The Superbowl is a family event. It was too much. Even if he was only supposed to reveal a portion of her bra, that was too much for primetime tv with a major event like the Superbowl. What happened to just singing and dancing? My church has sponsored Superbowl viewings at the church, nobody wanted to see all that. And she was doing so well performing, Justin was unnecessary period. It just goes to show that she's not as bright as I once thought if she thought even revealing her bra would go over well.
