The ‘YAY I JUST HEARD MICHAEL ON THE RADIO’ Thread

Live vocals, I always thought TOTP was mimed! Such a fantastic smooth track either way!
it’s one of my favourite jacksons songs too 💜
I believe the miming policy was implemented sometime in the early to mid eighties. in the early nineties, live vocals became mandatory. the viewers complained about that, and it became optional after that.

miming in general was standard practice on tv shows in the eighties and nineties in the uk back then.

I can't believe this. It's not the radio, but I'm watching Jimmy Fallon right now and The Roots are performing State Of Shock as the intro music for a guest. That's really random, lol.

this isn’t radio, but those in the uk can tune into bbc four right now for ‘top of the pops’. it’s an old episode that will feature the Jackson’s in the studio performing ‘show you the way to go’ (which went on to be number one)💜
the band heatwave were also played earlier, which rod temperton was part of. he and michael would begin working together two years later.
the performance was recently uploaded in better quality

Remember the Time on Heart 90's :)

BBC Lancs played Can You Feel It. Normally I don't take any notice when I hear the opening of that song because often it's just a jingle where they play the first 10 seconds to introduce something. But this time it was the whole song.

Using a backing track was compulsory from at least '91. Look up the famous TOTP performance from Nirvana - they were forced to mime their instruments, so the band played a stunt, although singing was live (and he deliberately ruined that too).

I think a few bands did stuff like that, so by about 96 singing was banned as well - bands then had the option of recording their own performance earlier in the day before the audience arrived, and miming to it. This caused its own problems, where a band couldn't hear their own backing track.
