Imagine my surprise to run into Joseph Jackson this week in Cannes. We knew he was going to be around, promoting various schemes. But he showed up at Sean Penn’s J/PHRO charity dinner for Haiti at the Carlton Hotel with quite a gang in tow: he’s doing business with Michael Jackson’s one time, problematic manager Dieter Wiesner. And he’s also found wealthy patrons who don’t speak English too well and probably are unaware of his unusual history.

With these new partners, to whom Joseph introduced me, Michael Jackson’s dad is going to start something called the Happy Land Resort: A Jackson Neverland Themed Resort World Wide. Lost on these folks is the news that Happy Land was a New York disco where dozens of people once died. But hey, they know what they’re doing. I met a lovely older woman named Phan Thi Phuong Thao, who wore a beautiful black robed gown that was embroidered heavily with silver and gold. She’s the Chairman of the Board, and obviously quite smitten with Joe Jackson. She doesn’t speak English.

My hat is off to Joe Jackson.

I did ask Joe if he’d seen his famous daughter, Janet. She was also in town, staying with Roberto Cavalli on his boat. It was Janet’s birthday on Monday, but Joe told me: “We don’t celebrate birthdays.” When I asked if he’d seen her, he replied: “No, but tell her I said hello if you do.” Will do!

Is this Roger? If it is Roger has called Joe everything but a child of God but when he sees him face to face he turns into a kiss ass. Screw the both of them

anotehr one of those things the Jackson family wants to do that never happens.. OK!! NEXT story please lol

Yes, you're right Lindsey..I'll try to just laugh at this now cause I'm already crying :( and its hurting ... The title of the thread alone made me cringe and go speechless...:(

Roger Friedman isn't allowed on the main board; so, this is moved to tabloid.

Joe is just pathetic. On the bright side i doubt he'll these hotels will ever actually happen.

I dont worry becuase a Joe Jackson Neverland resort will never see the light of day.
He can Happyland all he wants .. but I doubt he will get the financial backing for such a venture.

why the name 'happy land' how cheesy is that. come on now, i know fans need somewhere to go on the anniversaries but 'happyland' i dont think so tooo CHEESEY

lol i think she means Joe is in a land of his own calling it happyland. Happy to come up with all this crap and stuff. i dont think she meant it to be real.

I think joe is probably calling it "happyland" cuz neverland is already kinda taken still.......isnt?

But still joe seriously get over it!!!

Joe wants money. To pay his bills. Neverland hotels or Feverland strip clubs, all the same for him.

lol i think she means Joe is in a land of his own calling it happyland. Happy to come up with all this crap and stuff. i dont think she meant it to be real.

Although with him, you never know.

The Khang Thong Group, Vietnam, (who are building Happyland) held a memorial gathering for Michael on 25th June 2011, and these are some of the photographs:

'On 25th June 2009, the world had stunned by the sudden death of the legendary singer, Michael Jackson. Although two years passed, the memories and the influence of Michael Jackson have remained strongly in the hearts of his millions of fans across the globe.

On 25th June 2011, the activities to commemorate the second anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death were held around the world. On the same day, in the Khang Thong Group’s office, the Michael Jackson’s 2nd memorial service was held cosily with the participation of Khang Thong Group’s staff and other invited guests.

Joe Jackson, Father of Michael Jackson, is a major partner of Khang Thong Group. He is an independent investor involved in the five-star Happyland hotel project, located in Happyland Entertainment Complex, in Ben Luc District, Long An Province by the owner of Khang Thong Group

Although his life had ups and downs, Michael Jackson has always been one of the artists contributing positively to charity. Michael Jackson built Never Ranch as a dream world of every childhood. This is what the Happyland project of Khang Thong Group is heading.

In the Memorial Service, Khang Thong Group’s staff reminisced the memorable pictures in the legendary signer’s life and career. The favourite songs such as "We are the world", "Earth Song”, "Dangerous" were sung by Michael Jackson. His amazing moonwalk dance and tune have become immortal.'

:wtf:

This project will happen?

My question is...who are the target clientele for these Joe Jackson ventures? Michael Jackson fans? There's no way in Hell any of us would want anything to do with Joe Jackson or his business, especially given the way he treated his son, and the way he continues to mistreat him after death. It's enough to send chills down anyone's spine.

As for the name, "Happy Land", really? The way this scheme is drawn out, it seems more like Cuckoo Land to me, but anyway...

Joe is clearly some sort of psychopath, he'd be excellent in business, given his callousness and total lack of moral compass. I think he would really succeed in other business ventures if he wasn't so utterly transparent. He should also look into something other than investing in things which have to do with his son, or somehow are connected to his son, because none of us are ever going to go for any of that.

He should try to sell insurance, or something...maybe Avon.

I think the company seems to be very genuine and of course it won't hurt them to be 'associated' with Michael eg if Happyland is a 'tribute' to Neverland (or 'Never Ranch' as they seem to call it)!...but as to using his name and image eg for advertising...well, we've seen where that leads, so I hope they don't think they can go there.
Joe is 'representing' an investor. I'm not sure that his association with a mega theme park would necessarily put off the generality of potential visitors....if its a well designed park and affordable to visit, families will go there.
It looks as though European airlines feel that tourism to Vietnam will increase, (not just because of this planned park- there are lots of other leisure developments in the pipeline) ....there will be direct flights starting from both England and France in the next 12 months or so.

I think Vietnam hopes that tourism will help to pull it out of an economic hole..inflation is running about 21% there at present, and the economic situation looks a bit dire. (Hope they're not expecting millions of tourists from Europe though...hope someone told them about our dire economic situation, LOL)
I think China, Russia and S Korea are potentially big tourism customers.

From Feb 11th 2011Mr. Joseph Jackson arrived today in Vietnam to break ground on the new Happyland Resort christened under the slogan “From Neverland to happyland”. During his stay in Vietnam among other activities he is set to meet the President and Vice President of Vietnam. The happyland resort has been designed by Steel partners and is to be larger than Disneyland California.

Mr. Sims of Dougherty Sims Investment Macau Co, Ltd, Mr. Joseph Jackson’s business partner for Asia was instrumental in bringing Mr. Jackson’s visit to fruition. For the ground breaking ceremony over 5,000 guests have been invited

Personally, I suspect Joe is the 'public face to help bring in other investors / funds by MJ association' and Mr Sims is the 'upfront cash'..or most of it.

It must have been hard to have a father that cares more about money and fame, then in you. I never understood what MJ meant that Joseph was cold until i saw that BET award interview, when he just days after MJ:s death promotes a new record company.
But for Joseph, it seems to be happy days after MJ died, cause he can play bizznes man. Well, Joseph, you aren't, and i hope you die soon.

The Happyland webpage has been re-designed and has some new images of the planned attractions on it..see 'autorefreshed' images at the top of the page at this address.

Among the new artists impressions, is a picture of a 'winery villa' (a bit like a French chateau)...and guess whose statue is pictured standing next to it (no prizes, sorry, LOL).

I think a statue of Michael counts as his 'image'....but as this is only an artist's impression I guess no-one can do much about it?

Here it is: (apologies for the small size)

Oh Joe.... :sigh: :puke:

Not only the hotels and theme park...but also a music museum seems to be planned at 'Happyland'. Check out the 'artists impressions' of the buildings below: One rather large portrait stands out.......

This is a screen capture from the slideshow at the top of the page with the internet address below. Its a very long slideshow, (this is probably picture 20 or more from it...ie it includes all the other artist impressions of the development), but perhaps someone else can get a better screen capture?
(The smaller pictures around the side of the curved building are all of Michael)

MJ’s dad withdraws from $2bn project in Vietnam

Joseph Jackson, father of late pop king Michael Jackson, has pulled out of a massive entertainment complex in Vietnam where he signed a deal to be involved in the construction of a major hotel last year.

His withdrawal from the development of the hotel which is part of the Happy Land project, a Disneyland-inspired amusement park, was posted on his official website in January, and confirmed Wednesday by Phan Thi Phuong Thao, board chairwoman of its developer Khang Thong Group.

The website said that Jackson decided not to proceed with any further investment or involvement in the project after “careful due diligence and discussions with his wife, family and advisers.”

He believed in the growth potential of Vietnam and would return to it for new opportunities soon, the website reads.

Meanwhile, Thao told the Saigon Times Online newspaper that Jackson signed a Memorandum of Understanding :)ursofunny:)with Khang Thong in February last year to advise and help it find investors for the development of a five-star, 1,000-room hotel inside the complex.

The man has so far recommended two US investors to Khang Thong but no deals have been clinched between them, the chairwoman added.

An American manager, former boxer and former musician, the 82-year-old man is best known as the father of American entertainers Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson, and the creator and manager of The Jackson 5, a Motown group comprising several of his children.

Happy Land, developed on a 338ha area in the Mekong Delta province of Long An, is estimated to cost US$2 billion over three years.

Inspired by the well-known Disneyland Park, the Vietnamese complex will include a theme park that costs $600 million, a 3.7 km boardwalk, a shopping center, 3-5 star hotels, water parks, studios, indoor and outdoor theaters, restaurants, a floating market, and other facilities.

The project site along the Vam Co Dong River was once meant for a large-scale industrial park but Khang Thong then switched to a tourist construction plan following environmental concerns.
