To celebrate the Billboard Nielsen BDS-based Pop Songs chart's 20th year of monitoring and informing popular music trends, Billboard released a list of the top forty pop songs artists since 1992…

Rihanna
can now have her cake, cake, cake and eat it too!

The Barbadian singer was just named Billboard’s top pop song artist of the decade, surpassing Britney Spears, Madonna, Kelly Clarkson and many other chart-toppers for the most coveted spot as number one.
Once she found out about her new title, the “Diamonds” singer took to Twitter to express her excitement.
“Billboard crowned me #1 top 40 artist of the decade just 7 years into this!” she gushed.

With eleven number one singles on the Billboard charts since the beginning of her career in 2005, it’s no surprise the five-time Grammy winner has been crowned as the queen of pop…at least for now.

“Success for me isn’t a destination, it’s a journey,” Rihanna once said of her fame. “Everybody’s working to get to the top, but where is the top? It’s all about working harder and getting better and moving up and up.”

That does not make her the queen of pop. Rihanna's songs are catchy so that's probably why many of them are #1 hits, but she doesn't write any of her music nor does she produce it - she's manufactured.

... having No.1 songs means nothing.

BUT, here we go again... Billboard presents these artists to us... people around the world that they are the only sucessful ones,... are the best of all, and thats why they have the right to be titled as a Queen or King... of what? A pop song chart?

Its only Billboards chart, and in Europe or Asia there are other artists hugely successful, comparable to the American artists hitting the Billboard charts.

An artist has to sell records - albums and singles, once and so far physically and today also as downloads.

FYI: Garth Brooks has sold more albums (since 1990) than Elvis Presley.

Being called a Monarch of Pop used to mean something. Now it's just a flavor of the month. Ever since Michael earned that title, Billboard and others like them have been furiously attaching to whatever they can to try and deal with their envy of Michael Jackson.

10º????? She overtook Madonna.... how could this be possible? ;blink: :fear:

Kesha is a part of this list. Why would anybody even care?

(But either way, go Hootie!)

This list covers how many Top 40 songs an artist scored, but only since 1992. However, most of the listed singers aren't album artists (so they don't sell many albums, only singles) and you have to take into account that, for example, 10 singles which reach #1 each for a week don't sell more than 10 singles which reach #5 but last much longer in the charts (Rihanna's singles don't really have much chart duration). And of course, the 80's are left out.

If you take everything above into account, it's clear Madonna is and will stay the most succesfull female artist of all time. Look at following list, it covers the total sales of an artist. Madonna is #4 best selling artist (directly after Michael), Rihanna and the likes aren't even #50.

I'm sad looking at that list. They've really lowered the bar. And this is coming from a musician.

So this is based on the number of Nr 1 singles? It's a pretty ridiculous looking list though. Most of those "artists" will get forgotten pretty soon. Many of them already are and you have to look up on Wikipedia to remind yourself who they were.

(As a sidenote, I remember how hyped Hootie & the Blowfish were back then in the US. Where are they now? They had like one hit album and that was it. But many of the artists on this list are like that.)

Almost anyone can get a #1 hit these days, if enough payola is behind it. Just look at the new "Queen", Rihanna. She doesn't write, produce, dance or even sing very well but her record company puts millions behind writing sessions with the industries biggest hit makers. Each of her singles are manufactered in a hit factory. LITERALLY. They each cost millions and since Rihanna is a singles artist, she doesn't have much bank. There's articles discussing that she isn't as well off as one would imagine, having had so much radio success.

Why is the media so eager to put these titles on every up and comer? Literally, all these run of the mill pop stars have had "Queen of Pop" placed beside their name (know full well Madonna owns it - no one encompasses it as she does), reminiscent of how the media has done MJ over the years. It makes me sick.
