Let’s Stop Comparing The Weeknd, Chris Brown, + Anyone Else To Michael Jackson
People mean well, but get the hell on.

You don’t have to convince me about the power of Michael Jackson. His name is Michael Joseph Jackson. Mine is Michael Joseph Arceneaux. I was born in 1984, i.e. 25 years after the debut Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5 and two years after the release of the record-breaking, worldwide smash and hugely influential Thriller album. For many – notably 1980s babies and the pop stars they’ve seen produced – he is a template and a genre of music unto himself.

Still, there is one point that should be obvious but apparently continues to go over people’s heads: there will never be another Michael Jackson.

However, that doesn’t stop people from either comparing themselves to Michael Jackson or allowing other people to do it for them.

Nick Cannon recently took to Instagram and uploaded an image that drew the ire of anyone with some damn sense. In what he called “The Perfect Equation,” it argued that Michael Jackson and 2Pac equal Chris Brown. In the caption, Cannon argued, “A lot of times we don’t realize or acknowledge our treasures while we still have them with us. We wait until they are gone to appreciate their power.”

I have never supported Mariah Carey more than I do in this moment.

Let’s be very clear that while the sentiment “you don’t know what you got ‘til it’s gone (Joni Mitchell never lied)” is true, it doesn’t apply here. Michael Jackson was the biggest pop star on the planet. 2Pac was a hugely successful rapper with a burgeoning career in Hollywood. Both sold tens of millions of albums. Both were critical and commercial successes until the day they died. Both, however, faced some serious allegations leveled against them and the world reacted accordingly. Such is life.

Chris Brown is indeed talented, but even before “the incident” with Rihanna (as in, the physical assault of her), he was in no way shape or form comparable to them. He was on the verge of wider success, but even under heavy controversy and criticism, manages to be one of R&B’s greatest successes. That’s good for him, but as far as being a creative goes, Chris Brown is basically a light skinned Bobby Brown rather than the second coming of Michael Jackson.

And to be perfectly quite honest, if nothing else, Bobby Brown gave the world Don’t Be Cruel. Chris Brown doesn’t even have that, so don’t you dare keep comparing to Michael Jackson just because Chris Brown can dance. He doesn’t even dance like Michael Jackson, for the record.

People use Michael Jackson as a measuring stick of an artist’s worth. The problem with that is most folks have no real appreciation for who Michael was beyond an amazing dancer with some cool videos.

Take for instance, the other person who is now being compared to Michael Jackson: The Weeknd.

You know, I’ve come to embrace the gloomy Canadian’s music. It’s like American Horror Story meets sex and drugs. I even appreciate how candid he is about his pursuit of mainstream popularity. Nevertheless, paying homage to Michael Jackson on songs like “Can’t Feel My Face,” “In The Night,” or his remake of Jackson’s “Dirty Diana” a new Michael Jackson does not make. Don’t let the great stab at karaoke fool you.

Unlike Brown, The Weeknd himself has introduced the Jackson comparisons to a degree, openly professing his love and admiration for Jackson in the New York Times magazine, and more recently, Rolling Stone. In the latter interview, The Weeknd said, “People forget — ’We Are the World’ is for Ethiopia. At home, if it wasn’t Ethiopian music, it was Michael. He was our icon.”

I’m touched, but not so much by the tagline in the piece and the other about him wanting to be “our” or “your” Michael Jackson.

If there’s a heaven, I hope Jackson is quoting the chorus of Trillville’s “Neva Eva.” He has every right to.

Michael Jackson was a child prodigy. Michael Jackson is a very gifted vocalist whose ability to entertain often overshadows that tidbit. Michael Jackson literally changed the music video. Michael Jackson is a true visionary. His style of performances pulled from other influences, but ultimately made something all his own. He was not ’Diet James Brown,’ as many of those who followed him shoot to be, more or less, a Coke Zero version of him.

I could go on and on, but by now I hope you get the point. Michael Jackson was so much more than just a moonwalk, a hot music video, and a hee-hee-hee. When people make these comparisons as a compliment to another artist, it often reads as an insult to Michael Jackson’s multi-faceted legacy.

I know people mean well, but I mean even better when I tell them to get the hell on. Insert “shamon” here. And then add a thrust kick, crotch grab combo. Now get.

That comparison with Tupac doesn't make any sense because he was more successful posthumously than what Tupac was in life.

People could say Prince and Madonna are Michael's peers but he doesn't have peers because no one else is in his same level. As Berry Gordy said, "Michael Jackson raised the bar and broke the bar." Any attempt of comparison will look like shameless and predictable publicity stunt.

I agree that people most likely mean it as the highest compliment possible, unless it's ego driven by the artist himself.

But I saw 5 articles alone this week (and the weeks not over) claiming 5 different people were the new Michael Jackson.
So crazy.

What's so bad about comparisons, am I missing something here?

I don't think it's bad necessarily. In a way it's a good thing that MJ is held up as an example by so many artists. It gets annoying only when they truly believe the hype and they think they are on that level.

It's an insult if they compare Taylor Swift to Michael. How could they.

In my opinion, if they compare any artist to MJ, they underestimate MJ's legacy and his work. The artists that are compared to Michael don't even come closeeee to what Michael has done in his career. People still know the concerts that Michael did back in the days, people still know how big MJ is and still was.

How many world records did Michael break, how many things did Michael achieve? Now compared this to what Taylor, Chris, Justin Bieber, Adele or any one else has done in their life. It doesn't even come the slightest bit close.

It seems like it's a normal thing now, if you achieve something still small and then to be compared with Mike.

I personally take comparison quite different than some here obviously... In fact I even like comparisons that I don't understand often... Reason? Because it shows the impact Michael made on people.. To say "this reminds me of Michael Jackson" "That was so MJ" "He sounds like MJ" "That's MJ'esk"... shows me that anything and everything can be influenced OR viewed as influenced by Michael.. For a person to be reminded of Michael when complimenting someone else is only a compliment TO Michael Jackson.. Even if we don't think it's up to par!!

Everybody wants to be like Mike!

I don't know who the hell the Weeknd is and probably wouldn't want to know. As for Chris Brown, I'll pass and that was before he assaulted Rihanna.

I'm hoping to read more articles from this guy:D

Kanye being the most absolutely painfully obvious. If you are that good, people will think you're that good! You don't need to tell us!

Donkey.....

By the way has anyone seen the Weeknd perform My Face Fell Off (or whatever) live??? Now that's a good song but he is CHRONIC live. I've seen a couple of performances.

Felt sorry for him. Poor lad. Backing track is louder than him.

That's the way I see it really. I don't mind comparisons but I do mind when people go "ooh he's the next King of Pop!" "ooh he's the next Michael Jackson". There's only King of Pop motherf**ker and his name is Michael Jackson!

Bruno Mars posted a photo of Michael on Facebook earlier today, and some of his fans were saying now that Michael's gone, Bruno's the next King of Pop.

No disrespect to Bruno (cos I like him, great entertainer) but all I could do was...

Because somehow Michael dying erases all everything he did as an artist that made him the King of Pop in the first place? Some people...

 Well said and it does speak the truth totally
It annoys me when people say an artist is "the next michael jackson"
michael was unique in his own and was in own person. Thank god no one really called mj "the next elvis" cuz he & his elvis were two different people and had different styles of dance etc and had people said that to michael he wouldve been like

:hysterical: That pic of Mike sums up PERFECTLY how I feel when someone says that! The dumbest thing someone asked me personally about Mike's passing/KOP status came from a coworker (a day after the memorial) who asked me "who are you going to listen to in place of MJ now that he's gone? Who will be the king now?" I looked at him, shook my head and told him no one is taking Mike's place.

Just DAMN...

God it's so annoying when a musician you like dies! You come home to find all their CDs/vinyls have mysteriously vanished and their music on your phone has disappeared!!

I was really impressed with this guy's article, but did anyone else notice that he noted that he was born in 1984, which was 25 years after Diana Ross presented the Jackson 5?

That would make Michael about 2 years old when Diana presented them-I know he's a child prodigy, but....a BABY PRODIGY is unheard of!!! :)

I pointed it out in the comments the second the article hit my news feed, but he hasn't corrected it yet.
Maybe I'm the only one who noticed it. Guess it's not a big deal.

I know, RIGHT?! I'd have very little to listen to if that happened, since most of the artists I listen to and love the most are no longer alive.

Nick Cannon is crazy if he truly believes that. I've followed both Chris Brown and The Weeknd's catalogue and I'd say both artists have enjoyable music, but nothing touching or special that of MJ's. The vocal abilities MJ possessed from The Jackson 5 on up, it just amazes me that people come up with these ridiculous comparisons. When you compare any artist to MJ you have to bring everything to the table: creativity, being versatile (different from the rest), performing/singing live, vocal abilities, SWAGGER & most importantly.. global impact.

I agree that people need to stop compraring the likes of Rhianna, Chris Brown and the weeknd to him. There was only ONE Michael Jackson and he was Michael Jackson the king of pop.

I disagree about measuring sticks though, my measuring stick has 3 notches on it only, Michael at the top, Prince (The musician not his son) a wee bit undera nd everyone else (All other artists) at the bottom end.

People need to become better versed in their musical knowledge. You compare MJ's work to any contemporary albums of the same time, you find yourself looking at the peak of the era's ability. Compare Dangerous to Toni! Toni! Tone, Teddy Riley and Guy, Bobby Brown, Babyface, Al. B Sure, Tevin Campbell, or any other 90s records, they all sound great, but Dangerous is just, on another level with it's grooves. You could compare it to Justin Timberlake's Futuresex/LoveSounds, and it still comes out on top. There's just no one, who can measure up to MJ.

Michael saying omg is so cute and matches with what he could/would/should have said if he saw Weeknd doing whatever he is doing:D

Does anyone know where is it from, that omg clip?

I have no idea who any of these people are, and I don't care. no one even deserves to be compared to Michael, anyway
