Jimi Hendrix Thread

Short clip of The Jimi Hendrix Experience performing live on the Happening for Lulu show**, BBC 1 (original footage was in black&white). It's worth mentioning that Lulu's show was broadcast live on Saturdays. This was prime time tv (5.30pm?) not something that went out at midnight.

**I remember it as The Lulu Show. 🤷🏽‍♀️

"One of the best live covers ever? After a legendary rendition of 'Voodoo Child', @jimihendrix was meant to perform the band's latest single, 'Hey Joe. However, halfway through the song, on a nationally televised live performance, Hendrix stops the music and says "We'd like to stop playing this rubbish and dedicate a song to the Cream, regardless of what kind of group they may be in. We dedicate this to Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce." Cream had that same day just announced their breakup!"

Here's a decent account of the Lulu show appearance. The only thing the writer got wrong was this:

"Why did Hendrix do it? We will never know for sure because no one ever asked him why and he never appeared to talk to Redding or Mitchell directly about it. In fact the whole incident appeared to been forgotten by everyone (except the BBC) within a few days."

Wrong! I'll bet anyone who was into Jimi who saw this at the time never forgot it for one single second. I didn't!

"In our Summer 2000 issue of Experience Hendrix magazine, we detailed Jimi’s two May 8, 1970 concerts at the University of Oklahoma at Norman and have recently republished this feature online along with new photos and a recording of the second performance that night.

This important research, spearheaded by Rob Collins, Entertainment reporter for The Norman Transcript, deepened our understanding of the events which surrounded Jimi’s appearance at the university. Articles such as this make it clear just how profound an impact Jimi had on a cross section of young people fortunate enough to have met him or viewed his talent first-hand. Furthermore, Collins’ effort unearthed a number of fascinating historical details, as well as previously unpublished photographs.

The photography work of Rick Vittenson has proven to be one of those fortuitous discoveries. Vittenson was present for the May 1970 concert in Norman, but he has chosen to also share his photographs and recollections of a special meeting with Jimi Hendrix in Dallas, Texas on April 20, 1969."
