Not simply a black and white case

THE amazing case this week of a young woman whose black skin went completely white because of the condition vitiligo was enough to make anyone stop and stare.

But the transformation that pretty fashion designer Darcel de Vlugt, 23, went through is more common than most of us might think - adding weight to claims that Michael Jackson's change in skin colour was indeed medical rather than cosmetic.
Professor David Gawkrodger, consultant dermatologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "It's widely accepted now that Michael Jackson suffered from vitiligo and I do suspect he used depigmenting creams to clear the remaining pigment from his skin.
"The condition often results in smaller patches of skin losing pigment, but the whole body can lose its colouring."
While it is never life-threatening, vitiligo has a crippling affect on self-esteem. Prof Gawkrodger said: "Because it affects visible parts of the body like the hands and face, it's hugely distressing, especially for black and Asian people as the white patches really stand out."
Glamorous Darcel, from London, was born to black parents from Trinidad. She was teased remorselessly during her teenage years.
With her skin peeling off in patches she was cruelly dubbed "spotty" and "dalmatian".
Retired librarian Maxine Whitton, 58, understands the mental torture that accompanies the condition. She first developed vitiligo aged 11. Maxine, from east London, said: "In my early teens it appeared on my face, with great big patches around my eyes and my lips.
"For a teenager to go through that was terrible - I had lots of friends, but no boyfriends and I felt like I'd never have one.
"It is hard to describe how upset I was at the public reaction to Michael Jackson, but hopefully his case will make people more sympathetic to what it can do to you.
"Thankfully none of my children or grandchildren have it yet, but I pray every day they won't get diagnosed with this awful disease."
Vitiligo affects up to two per cent of the population. Pigment cells in the skin are destroyed, leaving a mottled, spotty white appearance that often spreads.
A third of people with vitiligo have a family history of it and it is equally common in all races but more visible in darker skin.

Prof Gawkrodger said: "We have some idea of what's happening, but are less clear on why.
"While there are several theories, the most widely accepted is that your own immune system attacks your skin pigment cells. Why it does this is anybody's guess.
"There's no cure and most treatments to halt or reverse it are largely disappointing."
There are options, though, including creams to repigment white patches, specialist make-up or six-month courses of ultra-violet light treatment.
But Prof Gawkrodger explained: "Best results are achieved by treating it as soon as possible and seeing what works. We desperately need more research into its treatment, but the funding simply isn't there."

I have been knowing aout this for a long time.I know many people who this has happen to. There is one particular person that I know who was black up to the age of 30 and in about 5 years he became completely white.

He jokes about it all the time, referring to himself as when I was a black man lol.

They need to stop with this "bleaching" crap. This was already explained that they put white makeup to even out the skin. These idiots have let these 2 decade long lies rule their minds.

What if Michael did bleach his skin?

What if your skin would be very patchy and you're fed up with all the make up you have to put every day to "even it out"?

I think I personally would do something "more permanent" to even the color out.

This could be creams, bleaching or whatever, I don't see the problem. It's for sure no fun to have to put ton of make up every day (which is also not good for skin at all).

If this is something to make your life easier I don't see the problem...

We all know that Michael suffered big time from his skin condition and was proud to be "black", so if he could help his condition somehow by using "something" to "even it out", I believe this would be justified.

Michael's aim was never to be "white" (as we all know) but I can imagine he did something to even out his tone eventually just to make day to day life "more normal".

I personally don't like Michael's look during sometime of the 90's.

He had way too much make up and I didn't like it (a good example is the Mystery Drink commercial, it's not flattering at all if you ask me...).

In recent years Michael looked a lot more "natural" and seemed to be using less or at least more natural looking make up?

cool story she's pretty.

Yes she is, bless her.

I can't imagine going through something like this, is must be so scary to think that you're appearance is changing forever, and you can't do anything to stop it.

I'm glade that people are coming forward more so now if that's the case. It'll help educate the ignorant on the truth about what Michael truly went through.

Yes that's The Sun!

I first heard about this woman a few weeks back. Nice story :)

A-holes. Cant ever just state it as fact.

It annoys me how all of a sudden people are like "oh so Michael really did have vitiligo" "I didn't know this was possible, I didn't belive him but now I see he was telling the truth" and all other kinds of bullcrap.

spot on. when MJ said he had Vitiligo, who ever cared, should have done their research then.

still not convinced huh
If you would read the rest of my post you wouldn't ask this.

It's easy to quote a single line. I should've put "bleach" maybe but well. You get my point when you read the whole post.

Like any medical condition you can use medication to "cure" it or make it "more bearable". If that in Michael's case meant that he used something that would even out his skin tone a bit, no big deal.

If "Joe the Plumber" would use this, it's no big deal, but if Michael would've used something "all hell breaks loose"?

Wikipedia:
''Alternatively, some people with vitiligo opt for chemical depigmentation, which uses 20% monobenzone (monobenzylether of hydroquinone). This process is irreversible and generally ends up with complete or mostly complete depigmentation.''

http://www.brownskin.net/vitiligo.html:
''If the patches of vitiligo are widespread and there are only a few remaining areas of normal brown skin tone, depigmentation of the remaining pigmented areas is sometimes considered. However, the bleaching is permanent and it is achieved with the cream, monobenzylether of hydroquinone.''

So it is a possibility that Michael used creams to bleach the remaining (visible) spots to get an even result. There's nothing wrong with that.

My point exactly...

Funny how no one cared about this disease until he died. As if it didn't even exist. Now they're like: "Oh, poor people who have vitiligo."
My ass :rolleyes2:

I don't even want to imagine how much Michael suffered because of this. And he never complained about it, simply dealt with it as well as he could.

Why don't we make a sticky about Michael struggle with this dreadful illness where we gather everything pertaining to Michael's battle with it? That way it will be at the front of the forum and whoever visits our site can see it. Also, whenever one of us is asked about MJ's suffering from vitiligo, we can refer them to this sticky.

If such a subject already exists, please forgive me :)
