RIAA Tallies The Decade's Top Gold & Platinum Award Winners

WASHINGTON -- The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) today released a tally of the decade's highest Gold and Platinum award achievements.

Included in the RIAA’s 2000-2009 count (below) are the artists who received the most G&P certifications, the best selling music releases, and a timeline of notable decade dates.

“We’ve seen a decade of major music milestones and extraordinary artist achievements as part of our historic Gold and Platinum program,” said Mitch Bainwol, Chairman and CEO, RIAA. “The names, songs and albums on our list are the decade’s best and are etched in our music DNA.”

“As the way fans access and enjoy music continues to evolve, so has and will the G&P program in recognizing the highest commercial and artistic success,” added Bainwol. “As a community, we’ve endured our share of challenges, but the new decade brings reasons for hope and optimism. The appetite for music is stronger than ever and the breadth of innovation is amazing. In this ever-evolving landscape, we’re grateful that the RIAA’s Gold and Platinum program continues to be the music industry’s recognized brand for success.”

While the RIAA’s Gold and Platinum program was officially launched in 1958, the past decade included a number of significant milestones:

On May 10, 2001 Sony/Jive boy band *NSYNC’s No Strings Attached (2000) became the first album of the decade to earn an RIAA Diamond award marking more than ten million in U.S. sales. The decade of Diamond albums that followed -- from Linkin Park’s Hybrid Theory to Norah Jones’ Come Away With Me and more -- represent some of the best and most influential recordings in G&P history.

In 2004 the RIAA formally expanded its G&P program to include a Digital Sales award in endorsement of the significant sales of emerging digital music formats. Two years later, in 2006, the RIAA launched the Master Ringtone Sales Award to recognize the growing popularity of enjoying music through cellular phones.

Come 2008 the RIAA heralded the 50th anniversary of its historic Gold Record, marking 50 years to the day Elvis was awarded his first Gold award for “Hard Headed Woman,” one of the King’s 53 Gold single certifications from the RIAA.

Several of the decade’s best awards were presented in 2009, including the best-selling digital download of all time -- at 5x multi-Platinum -- to Warner/Atlantic rapper Flo Rida for his hit “Low” as well as the highest certified ringtone ever to Universal/Cash Money artist Lil Wayne for his hot phone tone “Lollipop,” also at 5x multi-Platinum.

The following are the decade’s highest Gold and Platinum award achievements:

RIAA certificates only in the USA, so... yes, as we have known yet, Brooks is the best selling male artist in the US, outside the USA is almost (practically) unknown.

thanks. thought so. always same with the RIAA and their types they act like the USA is the only market in the world

RIAA means - The Recording Industry Association of America

But you are right, many "journalists/reporters" in Europe and rest of the world only "re-type" or simply translate such articles not always mentioning the word - USA/America... and then it seems to be the whole world.

On the other hand, the sentence - Garth Brooks is currently the best-selling solo artist in history having certified more than 128 million units to date - consciously indicates the particular point...
But of course, country (pop) music is very popular in the USA, and Brooks released 15 albums or so..., and its logic that if from every album was sold at least 10 mill. copies... he is the best seller, but no music value or music legacy...., good for tramping.

If Michael released after Thriller every 2-3 years a new album.... that would be different....

BTW, the current list of RIAA is about the first decade of the new century. So Michael is the biggest selling male artist in the USA in this century!, including Thriller being the best selling album, as it was in the 20th century!

Included in the RIAA’s 2000-2009 count are the artists who received the most G&P certifications, the best selling music releases.

mj at 44/750 mill(at last count years ago) brooks at 21/128 mill..i think they mean country artist. they don't get specific enough people spin these things all the time. guiness says MJ..so...

w/e....*ducks*

i'll wait a few years for them to reduce MJ's numbers and revise history, even more.

meanwhile, more around the world seem to know who MJ is, than Brooks..certainly in remote parts of the world, too.

I can't believe the Eagles sells so consistently even now.

Yay for Michael! I love the Eagles and I'm glad that people are still buying their music. I can't stand the "music" now, it's so annoying.

"look at us baby, up all night, tearing our love apart..." one of my favorite Karaoke song to sing hehe.

^

Americans sure do love country...

but I ain't gonna lie Garth Brooks is pretty cool- better than most of the artists out right now in the mainstream. :p

I'm not even into Country music but I just love the Eagles. I like their vibe and their music. Love how the band's voices blended so well together. Nothin' wrong with that and Country music either.... YEEHAW!!!!!! :tease:

Country is a huuuge thing in the US LOL.
I've never liked it much, but is always amazed by the amount of people who do!!

Good for Michael, we love you, regardless

That's the thing about Michael that's always been a negative towards him. He always took his time when it came to releasing new albums. Had he released more albums, more often after Thriller, he probably would be higher up there in sales above Garth & The Eagles.

Both of them are great. Garth is a great country music singer, and the Eagles are a great classic rock band.

What boggles my mind is the fact the Eagles album that is "tied" with Thriller is a greatest hits album. How can a GH album continually sell that high every year, when they don't re-release it or promote it like Thriller has in all of it's re releases?

IMO Thriller has to have more sales than the Eagles in the USA. I think the RIAA needs to take a closer look at the sales.

i dont think it is. brooks has always been huge in the usa

I don't know, I've never considered the Eagles a country band really. Not a typical country band and at least not their bigger hits. To me they are just classic rock/pop mixed with country I guess.

OMG some of my favorite Eagles songs are...

"I can't tell you why"
"Love Will Keep Us Alive"
"Desperado"
"One of these nights"
"Hotel California"
"New Kid in Town"

They just go on and on....

Garth Brooks is country and country music is BIG here in the U.S. (not that I necessarily love it).

And I LOVE the Eagles...one of the greatest bands of all time!

I live in the US and I've never heard of Garth Brooks...or his music for that matter?

Go Michael! Not surprised one bit.
