New Song Snippet - Another Day Featuring Lenny Kravitz (Merged) *No Links*

Sony has rights to anything recorded before 2004.

Since Another Day was recorded for Invincible, Sony has rights to it

True but if Sony indirectly released the song to, say pressure... the estate to release MJs music under Sony label (even though the estate might be in a good position to use another label to distribute MJs songs with a better deal say after 2011) then that is a bit questionable. Surely there are something in the contracts preventing Sony to do this directly or indirectly even...

I would like to know who would benefit from the leak...I also think there are not that many people who would have access to the song and I do think there is someone inside Sony who is not exactly too loyal to the company or its artists....

I would also like to get more info on the legal conditions that needs to be fulfilled in order to release and distribute a song. This is because if Sony has some exclusive rights to distribute "Another Day"..does it mean that when they get a copyright, they can control the use of the right as well...that makes me think about the role of publishing in all this...would they be able to decide on that as well. Using this "logic" would they get publishing royalties as well...instead of Mijac? Again, I am just trying to think the reasons for the leak. Sony, even if they leaked the song indirectly, would have to benefit from that somehow. They are claiming copyright for a reason...one, just to exert their power in the industry and pressure or two because thei seriously think the song belongs to them which brings me to another question, if they claim to have exclusive rights to the song...why the song was leaked in the first place...was it just a mistake?

...but we could talk about this forever and without seeing the paperwork I think it is quite impossible to know...MJs business ain't the most easiest to understand.

But Seriously, Sony Music's reputation is not getting any better.

Not exactly correct again. Mechanical royalties are paid to the publishers/copyright holders, always.

Whenever a song is sold (whether it be a legal download from Itunes, Rhapsody, AMazon..., OR a purchase of an actual hard copy (CD, Vinyl), US $0.09 (approx), is allocated & paid to the "publishers."

And you still need permission of the publisher/s to recreate/re-record a song, whether it be a small portion, a sample, or a complete reworked version. If you do, that's considered copyright infringement and a violation of intellectual property law.

Even if it's a parody, a touching tribute video on Youtube, the publisher has the full authority by law to either give permission or deny permission.

sorry should have been more specific - whilst copyrights to the song are most certainly NOT in the public domain, the right to make a recording of the song (without modifying lyric, melody or structural arrangement) is most certainly in the public domain as it would be for any song once commercially released. Obviously the publisher would expect to receive 100% of the publishing, but zero percent of the mechanical rights.

Once a song has been released as a commercial product, the right for anyone else to record an alternative version is in the public domain - in other words their is nothing to prevent anybody else recording a version of it.

To give you another example - anybody should they so choose, could record and release their version of 'Billie Jean' without having to seek the permission of Sony, Mijac or the estate, however Mijac would expect to collect 100% of the publishing royalties on the product - sony would collect zero (unless they were the record company releasing this version). Furthermore, Mijac could only prevent such a version being sold if this new version parodied, altered, modified or materially disrespected the song.

makes sense now?

So Sirena, I think we are safe to conclude there is/was "something" going on here....:)

I'M sorry if I am a little late. I didn't read back at all of the posts, but the newspaper said Lenny said it was done last year. he said it was a reworking of a song he released in 2004. I will try to reread, but if someone can confirm, that would be great. Maybe the peper got it all wrong. It wouldn't be the first time. Thanks!

OK. I just read up. So I guess the paper had it wrong. It looks like it was for Invincible. Thanks for the info MJ Brainiac.

If anyone wants to know which version is fake, take a look at the lyrics of Lenny's version

the second chorus goes by

At night, I pray before I sleep in hope of finding you
I've opened up my heart, I want you to come through
I close my eyes, I'm searching for your love

If that's not the second verse, then it's a FAKE

my God so many assumptions whether it's new or not... wish someone would finally say something! everything in the world of MJ has to be complicated!

I know that we cannot provide links to the song, so I am not asking you for any web site where you can download the song.

However, does anyone know where there aren't any websites where you cannot download the song, for example some web site addresses with errors in the URL?:D:cheeky::D

The song is the same song as
Lenny Kravits - Storm

THE LYRICS

My life has taken me beyond the planets and the stars
And you're the only one that could take me this far
I'll be forever searching for your love

I walked away but I was wrong
You're the one that keeps me strong
You're the fire that keeps me warm
How will I get through this storm?

At night, I pray before I sleep in hope of finding you
I've opened up my heart, I want you to come through

Jeez, im getting fed up with the dumbasses who say they have the full version then it ends up just being a mix of the snippet we already have.

I just contacted some guy who had his video removed from youtube saying it was the full thing. He said he had the full version and would send it me on yahoo. So I made a yahoo account especially.

So I asked himis it actually the full version or just a mix of the snippet?

Then he said. 'Is a mix of the snippet' like a complete annoying dumbass!

I've provided correct info here:

The song has been CONFIRMED to be recorded in 2000/2001 for the album INVINCIBLE. Lenny Kravitz confirmed this many years ago, in Blender magazine back in 2001.

Well-informed fan websites already mentioned the track name and the collaboration with Lenny Kravitz back in late 2001. It has been listed as an outtake since.

Claims the song would be new are based on clueless journalists who make things up to get more attention.

"Another Day" is also included in my unreleased song list and in the book "For The Record" by Chris Cadman & Craig Halstead - for many years.

So, let us PLEASE stop wondering when it was recorded as we KNOW it was recorded in 2000/2001.

;)

You're welcome :D :tease:

You had me fooled!!!

At first, I was gonna warn you because we're not allowed to post any links in this forum but I can't control my curiosity especially because Kirshach said something about Michael's vocals.

I checked it, and went.. :wtf: LOLS!

Hihihi, but I clearly stated a song "another day", not the song "another day".

As far as Kirshach is concerned, he mentioned the vocals, not Michael's vocals. hihihi

Sorry :D:tease:

So the song is really a Lenny Kravitz song called Storm! I know that song. It's one of my favs. actually. I have the album. It sounds different when Michael sings it. but the style of music on his version is different from the two versions I've heard by Lenny.

i just heard 'storm' by kravitz..

i'm telling you, this is another instance where MJ doesn't get his credit due. MJ took the rhythm, and wrote new music from it. that's how extremely different his production and arrangement is from Kravitz's. Kravitz never said that Michael arranged and produced this version. and Kravitz said that that wasn't the final mix. even with the dj's on it, it sounds final enough to me, and like night and day. makes me wonder about Quincy Jones, Gordy, and a load of other collaborators. MJ was the exec producer, from the beginning, if he was involved. and that's where the magic came in.

No.

Its really a Lenny Kravitz song called Another Day! This was the original title for it but once MJ didnt use it and gave it to JayZ (who ruined it!) then they retitled it.

The Jay Z version has no melody too it. Im not saying this as an MJ fan but as a music fan.

i don't think that Jay Z has the ability to write music. that's Kravitz's responsibility. so, all Jay z could do is rap. Kravitz is the one who wrote everything that surrounded it.

He doesnt but his effort (or lack there of) ruined the track. He walked his way through the song.

Granted Kravitz production of STORM was crap too but thats obviously where MJ stepped in and made it better.
