PARIS, Nov 21 (Reuters) - A portrait of Michael Jackson as King Philip II of Spain and an Andy Warhol print are among artworks on display at a show opening in Paris this week dedicated to the late pop star.

The 'Michael Jackson: On the Wall' exhibition at Paris' Grand Palais features an array of portraits and Jackson-inspired works including collages, videos and installations.

The exhibition was first shown at London's National Portrait Gallery in June.

Nicholas Cullinan, director at the National Portrait Gallery, hoped the Paris show would replicate the success of the event in London. He said 82,500 people visited the exhibition there, including celebrities such as Madonna.

Artist Kehinde Wiley's "Equestrian Portrait of King Philip II (Michael Jackson)" was the last commissioned portrait of the singer before his death, and it shows the eccentric artist in regal mode, wearing armour and riding a horse.

Jackson, dubbed the 'King of Pop', died at the age of 50 in 2009 after an overdose of prescribed medicines.

Jackson first rose to fame as a child star singing beside his brothers in the Jackson Five, whose hits included "ABC".

He then pursued a solo career that led to huge, worldwide hits with songs such as "Beat It", "Thriller" and "Bad". (Reporting by Sudip Kar-Gupta, Johnny Cotton and Clotaire Achi; Editing by Kirsten Donovan)

Interesting... and disappointing to hear. Guess I won't feel bad not travelling to Paris now to see the exhibition there. I saw it in London and loved it! Will see it again in Bonn, Germany next year. :)

New Blockbuster Paris Exhibition Celebrates Michael Jackson

Ds6soAEX4AAMh1R.jpg

Fresh from London, 'Michaelmania' has arrived at Paris as one of the most anticipated exhibitions of the year: "Michael Jackson: On The Wall" just opened at the Grand Palais, to the joy of the iconic singer's fans around the world.

Organized by the National Portrait Gallery of London and produced in Paris by the Meeting of National Museums - Grand Palais, with the cooperation of the Michael Jackson Estate, the show is an exploration of the cultural impact and artistic influence of Michael Jackson's personality and work in the field of contemporary art from the 1980s to today.

Many artists have been drawn to the late King of Pop, as an inspiration, a tragic figure and a fascinating enigma.

"Michael Jackson: On the Wall" is a nod to "Off The Wall," his fifth solo album, produced by Quincy Jones in 1979. "On the cover, the 'King of Pop'- the skin still dark but the nose already redone - posed in a tuxedo leaning against a brick wall, the blinding smile of optimism," explains Le Point. "The exhibition that the Grand Palais is proposing today recognizes that the dapper young man from "Off the Wall" is no longer, but he still lives... hooked on the wall."

The exhibition "includes works that reflect on what Michael Jackson meant to his fans, his place in African-American culture, the way he manipulated fame — and the way fame manipulated him," The Guardian wrote.

The show, which had a stint at the National Portrait Gallery in London from June to October 2018, and will be held at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn from March to July 2019 and at the Espoo Museum of Modern Art in Finland from August to January 2020, literally presents the superstar as an art object through more than 100 contemporary artworks including paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography, video and performances.

"Michael Jackson is one of the most influential cultural figures of the 20th century, and his legacy continues into the 21st century," the curators explain. "Although he has always been considered as a reference in the world of music, video clips, dance and fashion, his impact on contemporary art has never been discussed and never made object of an international exhibition like this one."

For the first time, the "Michael Jackson: On the Wall" exhibition assembles the works of more than 40 of these artists, from public and private collections around the world, and new ones created especially for the occasion by artists including Rita Ackerman, Dara Birnbaum, Candice Breitz, Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Mark Flood, Isa Genzken, Maggi Hambling, David Hammons, Lyle Ashton Harris, Jonathan Horowitz, Gary Hume, Rashid Johnson, Isaac Julien, David LaChapelle, Louise Lawler, Klara Liden, Glenn Ligon, Paul McCarthy, Rodney McMillian, Dawn Mellor, Lorraine O'Grady, Opie Catherine, Yan Pei Ming, Paul Pfeiffer, Grayson Perry, Faith Ringgold, Donald Urquhart, Kehinde Wiley, Hank Willis Thomas, Andy Warhol and Jordan Wolfson.

Michael Jackson: On The Wall will be open until February 14, 2019.

Just a reminder that the exhibition is coming to the city of Bonn/Germany March 22nd.

"Michael Jackson is one of the most influential cultural figures to come out of the 20th century and his legacy continues into the 21st century. His significance is widely acknowledged when it comes to music, music videos, dance, choreography and fashion, but his considerable influence on contemporary art is an untold story. Since Andy Warhol first used his image in 1982, Jackson has become the most depicted cultural figure in visual art by an extraordinary array of leading contemporary artists.
This landmark exhibition explores the influence of Michael Jackson on some of the leading names in contemporary art, spanning several generations of artists across all media. For the first time, Michael Jackson: On the Wall will bring together the works of over forty of these artists, drawn from public and private collections around the world, including new works made especially for the exhibition.

The exhibition was developed by the National Portrait Gallery, London, and organised with the Bundeskunsthalle. Michael Jackson. On the Wall is produced with the cooperation of the Michael Jackson Estate."

Saw this in London in September - one of the best MJ experiences I've ever been part of...so amazing to see Michael the subject of serious artistic interpretation and discussion. It was absolutely fantastic - German fans are always representing so I am sure it will be a blast for you all..but those who missed London from UK and other EU countries - if you can afford it - travel to Germany for this - its worth it.

:smilie_bump:

Exhibition opens THIS WEEK (March 22nd). German fans show some love at the Bundeskunsthalle for the King!

Madonna Pays Tribute to Michael Jackson After Visiting National Portrait Gallery Exhibition

Over the weekend, Madonna stopped by the Michael Jackson: On The Wall exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

The singer then took to social media to share photos of herself enjoying the gallery, doing some shopping at the gift shop and showing love to the late pop sensation.
I do love Madonna. She shows up for Michael. I love her for that.
