Why did MJ do it? Because he is a showman and he knew it would be entertaining I don't think he got hurt by these folks , I think he very much enjoyed them for various reasons lol otherwise he would have stopped doing it.

But yeah as far as the whole set up, I think MJ was very much in command of it. I'm willing to bet he asked them to pick the craziest girls in the audience lol
