Yes there was a best selling book written first by Margaret Mitchell before the movie was done. You definitely have to read it.

There is a book 'Scarlett' which is the sequel to GWTW but it isn't written by the same author. That book 'Scarlett' is what the movie 'Scarlett' is based off of. IMO, the book & movie 'Scarlett' is not as good as the book & movie for GWTW.
