Today in Michael Jackson History February 24th

HISTORICAL DATES

1970 The Jackson 5's second single, "ABC", produced and written by The Corporation™, was released and it went to #1 in the US, #8 in the UK and sold a massive 4.1 million copies world wide. It was first heard on American Bandstand in February 1970 and knocked The Beatles' song "Let It Be" out of the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970 and was also number one on the soul singles chart for four weeks.

1979 The Jacksons continue their Destiny World Tour in London, UK.

1987 Pepsi presents Michael Jackson's commercial, "The Magic Returns," during the 29th Annual Grammy Awards

1988 Michael continues his American leg of his BAD tour at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, USA attended by 16,960 fans. Two-year old cancer patient, Allan Bufford along with his mother, Brenda, meets Michael backstage. The ill boy obtained his doctor’s permission to attend the sold-out show. See Picture >

1993 Michael Jackson received the Grammy Living Legend Award presented by his sister Janet, at the 35th Grammy Awards at the Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, California. He attends the awards with his date Brooke Shields. Michael was also nominated for Best Pop Male Vocal ('Black Or White') and Best R&B Male Vocal ('Jam'). He didnt win those awards but did receive the most prestigious award. The Grammy Legend Award is the most important award in the music business! It's the top honor in the recording industry, given for ongoing contributions and influence in the recording field. After narrating a lengthy "How To Become A Legend" video scrapbook, showing how her brother became a legend, Janet brought Michael on stage from his front seat at the auditorium. Looking dashing in black jeans and boots, and a white beaded jacket, Michael embrace Janet. Michael was in sparkling form, and he was inspired to give his longest ever acceptance speech, poking fun at himself and showing his sense of humor that many haven't had an opportunity to see. Michael expressed gratitude to and concern for the world’s children, including the health and economically deprived, then raises consciousness and suggests solutions on urgent global issues, such as the inner city crimes, wars and terrorist attacks, or the overloaded prisons, increasingly entered by young people that were devoid of a proper childhood. Following the award show, Michael and his date, Brooke Shields, attend the Polygram party at A&M Studios and then attended Sony Music's party at Jimmy's in Beverly Hills.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"I don't read all the things written about me, I wasn't aware that the world thought
I was so weird and bizarre. But when you grow up as I did, in front of one hundred
million people since the age of five, you're automatically different. "

~ Michael Jackson (Grammy Awards 1993)

Looking at that jacket makes me cry.

Oh my goodness Marebear I was just going to ask if that was the one the final jacket was patterned after. Somehow, this may sound strange, but I have gotten some comfort from the final jacket. It is a masterpiece and a work of art, and when I look at it all I see is love--the love that Bush & Thompson had for a man that made them make such a loving tribute; and when he explained the thinking and planning that went behind making that jacket, I couldn't help seeing it only as a token of love & nothing else. That is why I feel no sadness.

In that 93 photo you can see the resemblance between Michael and Janet, & I remember how his eyes teared up when she introduced him to lovingly in that speech. Oh how times have changed......

I always find Michael's baby cheeks in late 70s looks like Prince's cheeks now.

Qbee when Michael ran off to that corner in the Destiny video, what if he went there to pee pee.
