I've been aware of this edit for quite a while since it's the only version that plays on Australian radio stations, it wasn't until now when I got to hear it again while walking through a newsagent playing one particular station.

The structure is like this:
Short synth riff of the "Cause this is thriller, thriller night" line, followed by a short instrumental intro which regularly follows the spooky intro. The first two verses and choruses go as normally, but it then jumps to the instrumental break before the spoken segment (including Michael's break in the middle). Ends normally with the laughs.

Is this related to an official 7" edit or not (definitely not the US one, known as "Short Remixed Version" on overseas releases)?

The song was issued in Argentina on a 7” single, with a ca. 3:34 edit of the song, it might be that or a self-made edit that was done by the radio. All the other edits (US single edit, European single edit and 2003 edit) are substantially longer.

How did you track the exact length when it was on radio? :D

Just going by the lengths....

The most spread edits on singles (7-inches, 12-inch maxis) are the "Remixed Short Version (4:05)" and the "Edit Version (4:37)".
All official Australien single and maxi releases all only had those two versions.

A few USA 7-inches also came with a 3:56 edit.
On Argentinian single pressings there was a 3:21 edit.

But no official 3:40 edit. If that's the exact length, then the radio station probably made that themself.

Remixed Short Version (4:05)

Edit Version (4:37)
