Sony and Jackson Estate reach agreement for Sony to acquire remaining half of Sony/ATV Music Publish

Well, it is MJ's fault. He signed that deal in 2006.

It was a very favourable deal for MJ, considering the circumstances. The faults lies with the Chandlers, the Sneddons and other leeches, including his own family. The vultures were encircling him all his life. Give the man a break.

Is it safe to say NR. 3 that Mrs. Jackson will probably soon need a substantial raise of her pocket money to cover her growing living expenses?

Looks like she already has

I do not receive any original of products to be sold on Michael Jackson. For me it is finished Estate. I do not want anything to come upon the bloody money ... According to eye killers shook hands

The Michael Jackson Estate's Billion-Dollar Turnaround: From $500 Million In Debt to $500 Million in Cash

3/15/2016 by Gil Kaufman

Nearly seven years after his death, the yawning, half-billion-dollar abyss of debt that Michael Jackson left behind has turned into a mountain of profit whose latest summit was topped this week thanks to a massive payday on his 50 percent stake in Sony/ATV.

The $750 million deal has Sony Corp. buying out the Jackson estate's piece of Sony/ATV, the joint music publishing company, whose holdings include songs by The Beatles and Bob Dylan. Jackson, who died in 2009, paid $41.5 million for ATV Music in 1985.

It was just the latest in a string of blockbuster moves that last year pushed Jackson to the top of Forbes' list of Top-Earning Dead Celebrities with a reported $115 million, ahead of Elvis Presley, Bob Marley and Marilyn Monroe.

According to that report, the singer's estate has rung up more than $1 billion, pre-tax, to date. With the Sony deal, the estate's executors -- attorney John Branca and music exec John McClain -- have pulled off what a source close to the estate called a $1 billion turnaround, from $500 million of debt to $500 million in cash.

Here's how they did it:

· After feuding with the family over its release, the posthumous documentary Michael Jackson's This Is It, released four months after Jackson passed in July, 2009, went on to become the highest-grossing music documentary of all time, with worldwide box office in excess of $300 million. The estate took in 87 percent of the back-end on the movie, with the source putting the gross figure going into the estate's coffers at north of $200 million when TV rights and DVD sales are factored in.

· In 2010, Branca and McClain brokered what the source called the biggest record deal in history, a $200 million guaranteed contract with Sony covering seven albums and other associated projects.

· Jackson's catalog continues to be a monster. Estimates of posthumous sales in the first five years after his death were in excess of 13 million in the U.S. alone. Considering that Jackson has consistently sold an estimated 70 percent of his records outside of the U.S., total sales since 2009 have easily surpassed 43 million worldwide. That makes Jackson the No. 1-selling global artist over the past seven years, surpassing such contemporary superstars as Adele and Taylor Swift.

· The 2012 Michael Jackson: The Immortal Tour -- an equally split joint venture with Cirque du Soleil in which the estate earned a 13 percent cut off the top of box office sales -- grossed more than $370 million worldwide, making it one of the top-grossing rock tours of all time.

· A permanent show at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Michael Jackson: One, is another fifty-fifty joint venture with Cirque in which the estate earns a 10 percent box office take, which, like “Immortal” includes percentages for royalties and publishing. The source said the permanent performance is one of the top two grossing shows in Las Vegas, just behind Cirque's O, earning around $90 million a year.

· Money also continues to roll in thanks to the strength of the Mijac Music catalog, which holds the rights to MJ's recordings and masters, as well as music by Sly and the Family Stone, Ray Charles, Presley and Aretha Franklin.

· The estate recently renewed a deal with Bally Technologies for the Michael Jackson King of Pop slot machine, extending the pact for five more years. The source said the venture has brought in a healthy eight-figure sum so far.

Do I get this right, The Estate made 50/50 deal with Cirque, meaning they paid 50% of cots making it, but only got 13% cut off from IMMortal, and 10% from One+ royalties and publishing?

Thank you for posting this video. I'm not referring to the person who posted this, obviously. I realize that Michael's own words never and still don't matter to some. He once told Tarraborelli, that he'd be believed because he's a reporter, even though he's a tabloid reporter. But Michael would be considered looney, for whatever he claimed. Indeed, MJ's predictions have once again, come true. Maybe it's just me, but I was under the impression that a lawyer was supposed to look out for my best interests. I've heard the saying...'Only a fool hires himself as his own lawyer. Well..things sure turned out interesting here. Michael didn't hire himself, but..somehow..his interests weren't addressed. Only a cold blooded person would defend a cold blooded person. Clearly, this man, Branca, is cold blooded. But..hey...somehow..the article claims that Michael agreed to this. It's interesting how if something bad happens, according to the media, Michael's name is attached to it. But if something good..according to media happens, it's credited to Branca. Michael didn't agree to this. His LAWYER agreed to it. It was his LAWYER'S job to do what he passed the bar exam for. Michael didn't go to Branca's school. That's why he hired Branca. And how was MJ to know, how this man, Branca, would turn out? I suppose we all have to go to lawyer school so we could figure out the good lawyers from the bad. It's interesting that Michael is blamed for not being able to go above and beyond his own abilities and cover Branca's abilities. But alas..Michael's not here to remind us that there are more things to life than money talks and you know what walks. I guess..it's all about the money, huh? People say what they want you to hear. And write it. Why would MJ sign up for something he didn't want to keep? That's why it's called an asset. Why should I believe in a lawyer and a corporation that seeks more and is never satisfied, as opposed to MJ, who used his great wealth for charity..the most charitable entertainer on earth? And why should I believe this faceless corporation really has MJ's kids' interests at heart? Your pattern shows..you're either a taker or a giver. The future cannot be predicted, but a promise should be kept.

They've wanted this catalog since he acquired it...we've all seen the measures they've taken to get it back...from the inside...You know who

You might be able to rob a man. But you can't steal anything from an angel.

I'm nearly tempted to activate my twitter account to post some info to Randy's kids and show how their own father tried to sell catalogue 10 years earlier, and if he had succeeded, there wouldn't be catalogue to sell today:smilerolleyes:

Oh please didn't his Daddy tried to get the angel to sell the catalog as well? And on a separate note those posting the Sony pictures, didn't Michael resigned with Sony?

Gotta ask when was the last time you actually purchased an official MJ product that you're done with the Estate now.

Haha, the amount of people that come in here for the first time and clearly haven't taken 1 minute to read what actually happened but drive straight to

"$ONY KILLED MICHAEL".

Amazing who has the third eye and knows who read and who didn't read. You may not like someone else's response, but you can't assume.

I'm glad that at least some people bother to read the news before throwing around wild accusations and insults.
This Sony bashing is ridiculous. There have been mistakes in the past, there's no doubt about that. But people should at least inform themselves, before they accuse others of wrongdoing now.
It was a perfectly legitimate deal and the estate will thrive because of it. That was Michael's intention in the first place. To secure his finances and to ensure that his children will grow up debt-free and without any (financial) worries. This is what's happening right now.
Emotions won't help us here. The deal was made in the past, and now another one will be made. Those are perfectly normal business transactions and they don't have got anything to do with some kind of emotional interpretations by some fans. Michael was a businessman. And a good one, considering the amount of money the estate (and therefore the charities, his children and his children's children..) will receive.

I just hope that MJ3 are wiser than that...

I think Donte might have said something to Paris given her Sony posts recently, which totally explains why she all of sudden started to have a go at Sony.

Which of Michael's siblings is the parent of Donte? I can't remember as there's so many children, grandchildren etc now.

I saw their tweets as they were RT'd onto my timeline. I guess you can't even blame them as their parents fills them with these lies.

Anyways, I guess it's hard for us fans to always understand all this legal stuff (I know it is for me) so I can understand the initial outrage but now that it's been explained to us I don't understand why some fans are still so intent on hating.

I don't know, could be Joe, Randy, Jermaine or anyone, but I think Randy officially adopted him after Joe came home one day and passed Donte to Randy and his then wife (or something like that:).

Exactly. You people have to nerve to just assume someone didn't read the thread. Stick to assuming these people killed MJ for the sale guys.

Idk, I think Paris posts are more Kesha trial related. But who knows.

I re-read Randy Jr's tweet again
"They've wanted this catalog since he acquired it...we've all seen the measures they've taken to get it back."

I wonder what he means by to get it back? Who has it originally and wanted it back, other than Beatles? Is he accusing Paul for plotting against MJ? He cannot mean Sony as catalogue was never theirs beginning with because MJ only sold them half in 90's?

Michael's children can hate Sony Music for different reasons but we don't know if her post has to do with the Sony/ATV thing. Randy Jr's post is ironic because his own father wanted Michael to sell the catalog 11 years ago but now they seem to point fingers at someone "from the inside".

All this hate for some of us fans who are bashing sony......ummm michael kinda did it too during invincible era!! ...seriously do u not remember?!! :banghead:

And? This was a part of a deal that MJ did himself, years after the weird Invincible/Sony feud era. Everyone is entitled to think what they want about Sony, but it's obvious in this case from reading it that there was no conspiracy at all as MJ was directly involved.

He had reasons.

Now the circumstances and I dare to say, even people who works for Sony are different!

IMO, we cannot automatically do what Michael did about 15 years ago just because back then he did so.

It is important to be reasonable, espacially if bashing someone.
