Thriller 40th Anniversary - Songs Discussion

Less scratches & hiss? Smh it shouldn't be none at all being that it's being released with a sacd & mofi album...

He said he WROTE it before OTW. He did not say anything about when he was recording the track, that had been discussed before already.
how do you write a song without recording it? are you Mozart or something?

Hopefully the stuff that's been said on Twitter about the CD rip being lower quality than the final product is true.

Anyone know what time it's released on streaming? Is it country dependent or one universal release time across the world?

The 24bit HR version sounds better than the leaked snippets. Either the leak was a bad rip or there are different masters.
It shouldn’t be the case of different masters imo

Writing it “in your head” is very common. Just yesterday I heard an interview of a Belgian singer who worked just like Michael did. He suddenly hears a melody in his head and immediately records it (or else he would forget about it) in his phone. He said he would use scratch vocals or he would go fa la la or bom bi bom or whatever as long as it captured the melody in his head.

I thought it was amazing to hear how similar his process was to Michael’s and this was an artist who is able to play piano and guitar and learned how to read notes.

Wow... i didn't think this was gonna be the case, but it is, the estate didn't replace the 2014 mastering for the disc 1 of Thriller 40. They really are that lazy that they only "remastered" the disc 2 and decided to use an old mastering for the original album, haha. Impressive.
And before anyone asks, yes, the waveform of every song in Disc 2 looks JUST like Thriller 25. This is terrible.

Starlight sounds infinitely better than the leak we've got, the original leak sounded like it had a blanket over it, i'm still sad the mastering is just as bad as Bad 25th, but hey, credit where credit's due.

Loving that the "blame fans for being upset at shitty estate decisions" crew have logged on.

I feel like because Starlight doesn't have static on it anymore there's gonna be a campaign on here to act like the whole album sounds great and people were complaining for nothing.

Extremely common. Paul McCartney and 'scrambled eggs' anyone?
Yeah but I thought Yesterday was from a dream? He didn't actually wrote that while awake.
Also MJ arranged songs in his head but the Beatles liked to arrange while playing or consulting George Martin.

Well, isn't that sort of true!? One hears an unofficial bad leak, gets all hyped up about how bad the original official release is going to be, rants about it for days, and then realizes, oops that was a bad rip! 😬 Now what! Should one admit they were wrong or continue line of 'bad release' thinking 🤔

PS: I am no friend of Estate, I don't even know the Estate being a new fan and all, I am just observing based on the roller coaster 🎢 of conversation here:)

No, I think it's been explained a million times in this thread what people are complaining about.
Right, though everything is based on unofficial leaks with no quality guarantee. Who knows if people started with original thinking would have been different.
Anyhu, I don't have strong opinion either way (we can talk when they start releasing videos of live show HD  , maybe in next life!). I am just trying to maintain my enthusiasm for a release. I am going to stop now 😂.

Oh, sure. I was just making the point that a song, in order to be 'written', does not have to be written as sheet music. Nor does it have to be recorded in a studio to actually exist, which is what was being implied.

Yes, Paul said the song came to him in a dream. I don't think that's all that different than Michael saying he woke up and WATW was already there in his head. I'm not a songwriter but that sounds pretty much the same to me.

Also MJ arranged songs in his head but the Beatles liked to arrange while playing or consulting George Martin.
Mm, but that's just details, I think. Somebody implied that Michael didn't know anything about music theory which is inaccurate, imo. He couldn't read sheet music - lots of pop and rock musicians can't - but he could compose songs, arrange songs and absolutely had an understanding of music theory. That's all I was saying.

Back on topic. I'm wondering if I can allow myself a bit of cautious optimism re Starlight. Fingers crossed.

Ha ha no clue, carousel sounds more or less fine for me in the new link... but "Behind the mask" sounds like there is a blanket over it for me... horrible
Just wait until someone does a side by side comparison of Carousel from T40 and the other leaked/released carousel. There is a major difference in sound quality!
