As a lot of films are slowly being re-released on 4k I was wondering whether This is It will be reissued on 4K in the future? Perhaps an anniversary edition Sony have been talking about for years.

Do we know which kind of cameras were used? Its possible that they were not 4K.

Edit: IMDB has some info:

Aspect Ratio 1.78 : 1 (negative ratio)
1.85 : 1 (theatrical ratio)
Camera Red One Camera
Laboratory DeLuxe, Hollywood (CA), USA (prints)
Film Length 2 937 m (Portugal, 35 mm)
Negative Format Redcode RAW
Cinematographic Process Digital Intermediate (2K) (master format)
Redcode RAW (4K) (source format)

It the says the source format is 4K.

I know Sony Pictures have remastered and released a lot their films on 4k Bluray. Perhaps for 15th or 20th anniversary, that's if physical media is still being sold then. If not could be in streaming/downloadable form.

No

if it is, it's going to be an upscale

Some of the shots are from SD Betacams

Yeah it would probably be an upscale because that IMDB info says that the movie was finished in 2K digital intermediate. Many 4K Blu-rays are so they could still release it. HDR could look great. They would have to edit it again from the original material if they wanted it to be 4K. Its digital so it would not be hard.

I highly doubt that

This isn't a very colorful movie

I'd rather that the Estate releases Moonwalker in proper 4K

I'm certain they could do a decent restoration AND still profit from the release, no Idea why they aren't doing it
I think This Is It is very colorful. The stage lights look great during many songs. I like how I Just Can’t Stop Loving You looks.

With TII being a modern release I can see it selling well with a re-release with the mainstream public. As it is still perceived as being quite recent and with it being his last tour rehearsals hold a level of importance.

I wish they would include new extras. Would be great to see more full performances.

Yeah they have like 100 hours worth of footage I would like to see different cuts of performances. They must be keeping it for something. There is enough for a couple of anniversary editions at least. Plus all of the footage of MJ and crew creating the show. Hopefully we don't have to wait until like 25th anniversary to see it. I have wondered why they haven't released at least one new additon yet.

Some of that footage will probably never get released for legal reasons

It was said (when the movie came out) that it was edited in a way that made Michael look "healthy enough" to perform
Whereas Katherine Jackson argued that he was in such a bad shape that the executives knew they were fucking him over

She lost the case, but it might make sense, the little amounts we have of This Is It aren't very energetic

Do we even know what the footage was originally recorded in? Talk of HDR and stuff like that really depends on if it was even recorded that way in the first place.

The original source was Redcode RAW (4K) (source format) from IMDB.
David Walgren during the CM trial back in 2011 watched all of the raw footage for TII. He stated that MJ looked optimistic and energetic from the onstage footage. Especially on the last two rehearsals. CM defense looked to try to find footage of MJ looking weak at the rehearsals , couldn't find any. There should be plenty of usable footage, which is why Sony did not want the raw footage used during the trial.

i looooooove hearing that!
fans painted such a grim picture of how mj was at that time all from hearsay.
how could he look so there mentally and sharp on the last day of rehearsal when they said he didnt sleep properly by that point for weeks..always thought that was odd,he should have been hallucinating and out of it completely

The doctor said that he stopped giving him propofol during the two days before he died and he managed to get real sleep if I remember right. That could have been the reason he was so good during the final rehearsals.

Would be great to see more from June 4th rehearsal:

I think over time things get distorted as memory fades, the footage speaks for itself and trust me if there was any footage that showed him in a weakened state CM lawers would have used it. Even on June 19th Walgren claimed the footage showed him to be somewhat engaged while watching Rehearsal with Kenny Ortega. The sad thing is I think MJ really did want to make his comeback.

@mjawb2009, apparently this 100 hours worth of footage is unusable for future releases.

In that extra footage, Michael Jackson shows a profound inability to do standard dance moves and to remember the lines of his songs, due to his insomnia.

This was confirmed by various people who testified at that 2011 trial (such as, by sleep expert Dr. Charles Czeisler).

Dr. Charles Czeisler also noted that if Michael Jackson had not died on June 25th, lack of REM sleep may have taken his life within days anyway.

The big commercial success of the 'This Is It' documentary was mainly because of the timing of its release which came out right after his death, and this success cannot be repeated via future 'This Is It' anniversary releases.

@Galactus123, it has been said that Michael Jackson was so good during the final rehearsals because he was given ephedrine shots, not because of managing to get real sleep.

If it's true Conrad Murrays lawyers saw all the footage - and decided there was no footage that showed MJ in a bad light, I doubt the footage is totally worthless - and I do not think MJ was in such bad shape as many try to put him. - I do agree he was under a lot of pressure and maybe his mentale state of mind was not perfect - but that was also true during the rehearsals for both Dangerous and History tours.

In much of the footage I really think MJ looks happy and in good shape. - He was 50 - he wasn't 30 anymore. - He was thin yes.

I still think we will get to see more footage released from TII at some point. - I really hope we get to see the songs that was rehearsed but not included in TII. - I would also love much more footage like TWYMMF sound check footage. - That is so interesting to see how he directs, guides and creates just the sound he wants. - If they have more footage like that I really hope they release it.

There is no way that all of it is unusable. He probably wasn't well all the time but I'm sure there is a lot of good material in that 100 hours. They could make many documentaries and Blu-ray bonus material out of it if they wanted to.

Iirc he was a lot better at the final rehearsals because he was on stimulants. Although I agree that if there was any dire footage of MJ the lawyers would have brought it up. I'm pretty sure the cameras were turned off during the known incidents, apart from that it seems there's no footage of MJ looking really bad.

I wonder how many times Michael rehearsed Billie Jean? I hope they recorded every one.

I hope we get to see these at some point:

According to Judith Hill, the rehearsal of Billie Jean that we see in the movie is the first time they rehearsed it with him. She has also said that Michael rehearsed it multiple times.

On the other hand, Travis Payne has stated that the blue shirt rehearsal from June 6, is probably the only time Michael rehearsed the song with the band.

Who knows what the truth is.

If you notice most of 23rd /24th was not included in the movie. Most of the footage is from earlier rehearsals at the Forum. This may have been done with future projects in mind. Also alot of the set list was not included in the original cut , this could've been done for a similar reason.

I recall someone saying that Dangerous was only run through once as a basic practice (also that it wasn't included because MJ wouldn't have been happy with it) although could be remembering wrong.

This is true I think Travis payne mentioned it in an interview, although I am sure the footage would be usable. A potential re-release would be more suited for the MJ fanbase specifically so they could then then include a wider range of performances, ones which the wider public may have less interest in.

Dangerous was rehearsed multiple occasions, Travis saying "Once" could mean a full rehearsal including all (dancers, MJ, video/lighting effects) - but it for sure was rehearsed.

Some other songs rehearsed prior to the Staple Center at The Forum - Stranger in Moscow, Dirty Diana (without staging effects), Will You Be There, & Heal the World.

The Estate still has hours upon hours of footage surrounding This Is It!

Dangerous was for sure performed at least twice by Michael. He did it on June 23rd and 24th.

still he should have been out of it before he slept, they said it was a month or 3 weeks without actual sleep,i mean...

I would so love to see Heal the World, Will You Be There - and also Stranger in Moscow

Just imagine if they were sung live like at the Dangerous tour rehearsals. - Would be amazing.
