When did this board start, 2007? Slightly surprised by the results so far - it can't be true that half the people are so recent...

I loved his Off The Wall album is when I got hooked. Love his music and wish I could have gotten to see him live in concert.

The day he died.. I was nine or ten years old when I watched the news on tv and I saw the sadness and the huge impact it had on my parents and the world. I was mystified so I started watching youtube video's of his performances.

I think an option post 2019 would have been interesting

Anyway: very late 80s for me

1972 Lookin’ Through the Windows. I’m from England and I’m sure I first saw the Jackson 5 on Top of the Pops but that may be a false memory.

Ah, very good. I was born late 70s - I do like that song though, from hearing it on a subsequent compilation. Every so often they show those episodes of TOTP...

I was 12 when MJ died and knew absolutely nothing about him beyond the media sensationalism, so I was taken aback by the outcry when he died. I’d never heard his music before other than miscellaneous snippets here and there.

One day, I was channel surfing and caught a glimpse of Macaulay Culkin on TV. I was curious, so I doubled back. Of course, it wound up being the video for “Black or White.”

Genuinely, it was a revolutionary moment for me. I’d never heard a song like that, listened to a voice like that, or seen artistic presence like that. It blew me away that someone that good existed. I immediately begged my grandmother to take me to Walmart to buy some of his CDs, and I’ve been a diehard fan ever since.

It's funny, the result of this poll actually puts a lot into perspective on here.

'96/'97 - at least I remember watching HIStory Munich Live on TV and Ghosts afterwards. I am sure I listened to his music earlier because my mother also likes his music. The first vinyl she ever bought was the Bad album 🙂. But the Ghosts-experience is stuck in my mind 😁.

I became a fan in 2009 after he died.

Prior to his death, I obviously knew who Michael was, but I never really paid attention to his music. But after he died, I heard his music all over the radio and instantly became a fan. Discovering Michael's music and listening to his classics for the first time in 2009 was a great experience. I never heard music or a voice like that before or since. I was instantly hooked.

i became a fan when i was six years old (some years after Michael died). my dad showed me Michael's music, something that i remember is that "smooth criminal" was the first music video i watched and song i listened to by MJ. i was amazed and i immediately loved him, attempting to do the lean on my bed but brutally failing. i do not remember much details since it was kinda a long time ago, or maybe i just have memory loss. i continued to dance to his music every single day, even getting my siblings to do it with me because i genuinely looked up to Michael, and wanted everyone to love him the same way i did. i felt nothing but pure joy when i heard his music, and saw him dancing on the computer, watching his concerts. my bigget dream was to go to one, in real life. although.. i did feel grief at times. shortly after these dancing sessions, i would sit by the balcony (i lived in an apartment condo with my family) and look up to the sky, and tear up. i looked up to the sky and was talking to Michael through my heart, that i loved him so much. i don't remember what else i said, but this statement truly stuck with me. i still visit our old apartment and all the memories come flooding back to me. another day, i went to a restaurant with my family and we were just eating our food, until Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop Til' You Get Enough" started playing on the speakers inside the restaurant. you already know i went wild! i recognized michael's voice right away, although suprisingly did not know what the song was called until I came back home later. i was amazed that his music was playing there. as soon as i came home, i went on my computer and searched EVERYTHING for the music video. EVEERYYTHINGGG. i'm not sure how i even ended up finding it.. but i did. and the music video of "DSTYGE" was engraved in my head. i'd rewatch it over and over again, fascinated by the work of art and wondering why i haven't known of that song and music video yet. i was inlove with the background, especially. i could not stop looking! my mom also recoreded a bunch of videos of me dancing to MJ's music - i danced to Billie Jean, Bad, Beat it, Smooth criminal, the classics. i would just search up 'michael jackson' on the family computer and watch his every move on whatever video i could find, then copy him. i did everything you could imagine, the moonwalk, the toe stand, etc. ohhh and don't let me forget - i also dressed up like michael! my clothes weren't exactly like his, but i wrote hats, jackets, shoes and more to represent him. Michael has always been my biggest insparation, and he still is today. he is the reason that i want to be a better person and make a change in the world! i will continue to love him FOREVER and ensure that my children love him the same way i did. i will be putting on his music, his concerts and his music videos EVERY single day for them. his music videos are truly so astonishing, like actual movies. michael definetely has an energy that makes children love him so much, like his dance moves, his kindness, everything about him!! I loved him ever since the first day i saw "smooth criminal" on my dad's computer. i hope you enjoyed reading this! i love talking about my obession with Michael ever since i was a little girl!! ❤️
