Michael Jackson’s “Bad 25”’s Previously Unreleased Tracks Receive Applause
September 18, 2024
Released on this date in 2012, Bad 25 commemorates the 25th anniversary of the original album with a 2 CD set, DVD, and vinyl and collector editions. Entertainment Weekly gave the set an A and its critic Ray Rahman was particularly drawn to the previously unreleased tracks writing that, “numbers like rhythmic earworm ‘Don’t Be Messin’ Around’ and tender ‘I’m So Blue’ shine, while ‘Al Capone’ an early sketch for ‘Smooth Criminal,’ is strong enough to stand alone as its own single”. Damn how I wish Michael changed the lyrics of 'Abortion Papers' to something (a bit) less controversial and finished it; that demo already has amazing vocal energy and a great melody!

More suggestions so we can change the lyrics with A.I. and release it!
Those damn rolling papers
with every puff they shorten life
Those damn rolling papers
think about the health of your unborn child

The boldness of it is what I love so much.
It's offensive to a lot of people, that's why it wasn't released. If he had re-recorded it he would still have this demo (for you) but also a potential hit) song that could reach the masses with the same message

I'm fully aware of this. We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I'm never going to change my mind that diluting the lyrics would have been a great shame.

That's slightly missing the point, imo, but nvm.

I'm not that fixated on hit songs. Michael had plenty of hits, not every song that gets released has to go Top 5 or whatever. I'm not even necessarily arguing for AP to have been released as a single - I don't really care about that although in my perfect fantasy world it would be on the album. I'm just talking about the song as a piece of art, as a piece of social commentary. For me, any dilution would be a transgression. There are plenty of songs / plays / novels / films that tackle incredibly difficult situations, life tragedies, problems, sensitive things that people struggle with - how about 'Papa' by Prince? I am simply saying that I admire Michael for writing an honest song about an incredibly difficult situation from the point of view of the guy in the scenario. It's not the story we usually hear.

Ultimately it doesn't matter since Michael didn't even include it on the album and we know he was very concerned about the emotional reaction some women / girls might have. I admire him tremendously for being so caring and thoughtful and for leaving behind such a loving and beautiful note about that. However, I am still grateful that the song exists in the form that it does.

"Every single one of us knows some kind of pain"

Michael was totally fixated on hit songs so his message could reach more people. I absolutely applaud him for tackling incredibly difficult situations and that's why I feel it's such a shame that he didn't want/wasn't able to change the demo, with the message still intact, but with less polarizing lyrics; since the music and vocal performance are just amazing and imho his message would have reached the masses. It deserved to be turned into a finished song

Anyway agree to disagree yes! We still have the demo to enjoy!

He wouldn't agree, since he didn't release it

Released or not, he still recorded it, which shows he had at least some deeply-held personal convictions on the subject. My personal opinion is that he likely held it back because he thought making it public would be seen as personally condemning people, which he was always against. But the fact has always been that you can't control the responses of others. If you really feel that passionate about something, be brave and take the risk, even if its controversial.
