Michael's short film output is enormous in the Bad era, by the way. I don't know how he managed to do it... there was the BAD Tour and preparations for that as well. Yet we got several short films with a longer narrative... Bad, Smooth Criminal, Speed Demon (he probably didn't have to be on set for all the the claymation bits, but still), The Way You Make Mee Feel... it's incredible. Not to forget The Chase, which is actually a short film as well... And then there was also the absolute masterpiece Leave Me Alone... It's a lot.

Actually, I just realised - me saying 'The End' probably looks like I'm saying 'no more discussion to be had' which isn't what I meant. I was just meaning, 'I've had my say and now I'm finished!'. Anyway, yes, I agree! A golden era for the short films. He spoilt us, really.

I slightly disagree about Leave Me Alone - really great video, sure, very clever, very imaginative but for me the masterpiece is the 4 minute version of SC. For storytelling, for editing, for staging, for the choreography, obvs! Michael's dancing, his look, his outfit, his curls, the perfect evocation of an era, the loving homage to golden Hollywood films ... I could go on and on but I am about to swoon! :D

O, I didn't mean Leave Me Alone is better than the others... it's just a masterpiece of animation! Can you believe parts of this video were created by having a whole bunch of people with scissors cutting Michael out of prints of every frame? You can see that a bit in the shot where Michael and his armchair are floating in the air... It's amazing how they made that video. Remember, this was before CGI! No computers!

Totally. Beautiful production values, beautiful creativity, fabulous storytelling, so many layers, beautifully paced, it's wild and wonderful, a fantasy, other-worldly and yet really not (seeing as the video was very specifically talking about modern day media intrusion).

IKR! 9 months to get the animation all done. That meticulous attention to detail. Just like comping vocals for a song. šŸ˜²

I'm an analogue person, ngl. I don't even really like CGI that much. What I would love to see is the storyboard for LMA (I assume they created one, I don't see how you could do it otherwise).

Also, why is there no dollar bill featuring a singing Michael Jackson in my life? (rhetorical question!)

Director Jim Blashfield is still around (he is 80 now!). He even has a website that still mentions Leave Me Alone. The website has an emailaddress as well... šŸ˜‰

Sadly there seem to be hardly any interviews with him. I am an interview fiend. I need interviews with my creatives! There's that tiny little Rolling Stone thing, a few scrappy podcasty bits and bobs. Every now and again I go and look but never seem to find anything substantial. It's frustrating.

oh, I'm not gonna email the guy. I'm not that person. If it was discussed in an interview I'd be all over it but I'm not gonna try to chase down stuff like that. In reality, I'm happy just to enjoy the work.

Also, the quality of people that Michael worked with. I know it makes complete sense given his own level of genius plus his outstanding artistic achievements by the early 80's. But even so, it's mind-blowing!

I need to go and watch the thing. :D

I hate to make this into a ā€œlive singingā€ thing but honestly, whenever he performed that song fully live it just became a different thing. He wasnā€™t bound by singing every part the way he sang it on the record and could break out in dance sequences and just feel the music in another way. This is why Bad from Yokohama is one of my all time favorite performances from Michael.

But I was very proud and honoured to be given the opportunity by Michael Jackson himself to participate as the bandaged mummy in his 'Liberian Girl' music video.

I explained to Michael Jackson that I was very busy at that time with a more important project.

Despite my declination, Michael Jackson never held a grudge against me for that.
