Ever notice how so many people get the moonwalk wrong?

You have probably been seeing videos like this everywhere. Where someone in public randomly decides to do the moonwalk. It looks pretty cool, however it’s not a proper moonwalk. To demonstrate, here’s what an actual moonwalk looks like.

The difference is the popping of the feet. The illusion of the moonwalk is that it’s suppose to look like your walking forwards but you are for some reason gliding backwards. Like there is some invisible force (that’s got a lot of power lol) pushing you backwards as you are walking. The people in these videos have their upcoming foot too high up and it slows them down. So while they do a really clean backslide, it doesn’t have the same visual flair as the moonwalk. That being said, I have seen a lot of professional impersonators get this right. It’s these type of videos that I usually notice it.

I don’t blame them, because despite what some may say, it’s a lot more difficult than what the generic directions have you believe. There is more to it than just having your feet take turns popping and sliding. It’s a problem that I figured out when I tried doing it for my Halloween costume a couple years back.

Still these people are talented and you can tell they are obviously inspired by MJ and having fun. It’s just something I want to point out, mostly because I get sick of the titles saying its “the best and smoothest moonwalk ever”, or “better than Michael Jackson”. The reason why the backslide became the moonwalk is because of Michael. He reinvented a classic dance move in the African American community and made it his own. No one can outdo him.

Everyone does it differently and might not be doing it to necessarily imitate Michael since he himself is not the creator. The move dates before Michael was born

michael definitely enhanced it to make it what it became. I’ve noticed that a lot of people, even the ones who did it prior, tend to drag their feet instead of pushing them. michael also raised his toes higher to accentuate the ‘peddling’ motion. he was a clean dancer, yet he displayed emotion at the same time.
