Which interview or parts of an interview do you feel capture MJs essence best and why? Including TV and magazine interviews.
Of course I'm aware that no single interview can capture a whole person, but if you could choose one interview to showcase who MJ was, what would you choose?
I feel like the Oprah interview (I'm aware this is an unpopular opinion) and Geraldos interview capture him best.
In the Oprah interview I see an MJ who copes remarkable well under the pressure of stupid questions. I like how he responded to questions about LaToya and his own virginity. I also saw a passionate MJ discussing dance, the press and being black. I saw a vulnerable MJ discussing his childhood and vitiligo, it did look like he was close to tears when discussing his skin condition. I think overall he came across as shy, gentle, loving, giving and passionate.
In the Geraldo interview he comes across similar, but more confident, he seemed to exhibit this quiet inner strength. And Geraldo didn't ask stupid questions like Oprah, so I feel we saw a more relaxed MJ. I liked how he talked about the values he grew up with from his parents, and when he referenced historical injustices as something he learns from to help him in his own life. I think we saw a more in depth MJ, and someone comfortable in their being.
At other interviews he seemed sedated/erratic or less open/defensive or geared towards promoting something. The interviews are also a reflection of how well the interviewer asked the questions to best capture MJs authentic responses. I also think that MJ was a mega star who may have curated how he came across in such interviews. But I do feel we see a more genuine MJ in those two interviews.
What are your thoughts?
It would be really good to hear this question answered from the perspective of someone who had the fortune to meet MJ.
