I have seen posts in a different thread where some users were talking about buying good sound systems to enjoy Michael's (or on general) music in the best possible quality.

I guess most people think that would be very expensive, that's why they don't even consider to look for a suitable system.

So I thought I could open up this thread so we can talk about different options in various price ranges - I assume we have some people here who know a lot about speakers? Maybe you have suggestions?

I bought some speakers myself some months ago and at first thought I would have to spend at least 1000€ - after a lot of research (nearly going insane) I paid way less and am very satisfied.

So I hope this thread is helpful for some of you. Where are the experts? 😁

Hello Hello Hello
Anyone Anyone Anyone
Interested in listening to music in the best way possible? 😂
Ok, maybe I can describe what I bought to start the conversation.

After a lot of research I bought:

  • a used vinyl player (Dual - DTJ 301.2 USB). Like the name says, it has a USB connection, so you could digitise the vinyls (the chance of me doing this one day is like 0,000031%)
  • speakers (Klipsch R-51M)
  • an amplifier that connects the speakers to the vinyl player but can also be connected to my phone via Bluetooth, so I can play music from the phone over the speakers (I know, Bluetooth= worse quality)
  • a cable that allows me to connect the speakers to my TV, too. So I can listen to music via TV (Tidal) or watch movies, etc.
Like I wrote, this is a very affordable setup, I love it, very satisfied. Also totally sufficient for me, because I live in an apartment and can't listen to music too loud. Sometimes I do, but... neighbours, you know 🙃

So... maybe I started the conversation now 😁.

Edit: I also considered these ones before I bought my system, found them in my research, and think they are good, too:

1. Q Acoustics 3020i (no Bluetooth)

2. Magnat Monitor Reference 3A

3. Nubert nuBox A-125

4. Argon Audio Fenris A4

5. Sonos Era 100

I prefer to use headphones than speakers - sorry I cant help.

I just wanted to make a thread about different sound systems, so we can talk about great options in different price ranges. Like I wrote, I have a very affordable system now and wanted people to know they don't have to spend hundreds or thousands of Euros/Dollars/... to buy a solid system 🙂.

And yes, I mainly listen to music over my headphones, too. It's just the most convenient way 😁.

My setup in my basement consists of:

• ION Audio Profile Pro LP USB Turntable (Temporary 'til I can get a replacement. My old Sony PS-LX350H broke.)
• A 5.1 surround setup: 2x Philips MC145 Bookshelf Speakers (Front), 1x AIWA SX-N3100 (Center), 2x Sony SS-SR151 Surround Speakers, & an AIWA TS-W45U Subwoofer
• Yamaha RX-V385 Audio/Video 5.1 Receiver
• CD/SACD Playback: Sony UBP-X700 4K Blu-Ray Player

Altogether, this can be a bit pricey, but it does the job, and everything sounds exceptional.

Sounds great. What are your neighbour's opinions about that? 😂

I'd love to have a subwoofer but I really want to keep my apartment haha...and tbh I always wanted a lot of bass in my music, now I concentrate more on all the other elements, all the details and the clear sounds are very satisfying.

Honestly, haven't gotten any complaints. It's in my basement after all, and I've had this setup for about a year 1/2 which is when I first purchased my house. I also have an Apple TV hooked up via HDMI to my AVR, and I can listen with lossless & Dolby Atmos (downmixed to 5.1, which Apple Music automatically does for some reason) with Apple Music. I just wish more of Michael's albums were mixed in Atmos and not just Thriller. Maybe if we get Bad 40 in 2027, we'll get Bad in Atmos... 🤔

Ah, that's cool. It's a dream of mine to have a whole basement for music and gaming but not gonna happen (soon) 😁.

Does Tidal have better quality, maybe? I don't know anything about Apple Music 🤔.

And yes, we need more material in better quality in general... it's a shame...

Great idea for a thread!

I'd prefer to keep it as original as possible.

That's why I've always used Westlake Audio BBSM-6 and BBSM-8 speakers in the studio. I also have a pair of BBSM-10s, but these are overkill.
I know they are hard to come by and expensive, but the BBSM-8s are the same ones that Bruce Swedien used.

The Westlake speakers are paired with Yamaha PC2602 amps. Absolute flamethrowers!

As for mixing and mastering, most of it is digital now. Pro Tools and Logic Pro are the main programs used.

However, for transferring audio tapes (cassettes, 1/4-inch, 1/2-inch, DAT, DDS and ADAT), I use a full-scale Tascam 16- and 24-bit system, including a Tascam M2600 mixer, which is connected to multiple Mitsubishi (ProDigi) tape machines. I also have a Telefunken X-80. Clearly, there are many more components, particularly for DDS.

My home setup is much simpler. I use a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250 ohm headphones and a lot of Schiit gear.

I can highly recommend Dynaudio for home speaker systems. I love the "Focus series".
