Me dancing MJ on show

what was nice and what was bad?

I don’t think this is forum is the right place for this thread and will be moved but i will respond since you asked.

Firstly it is clear that you are taking liberties with your moves and you probably know that already. Meaning it is not exactly accurate. If it is your idea to have fun with MJ and just go with what you were in mood for then that is perfectly fine also. Not every single thing has to be down to the tee. However, if your goal was to be accurate then you have a lot of homework to do :) You have good energy so keep it up. I am not sure if this was a one and only event or do you have plans to do this in long term also and by that i mean seriously commitment wise. Both are equally fine but you need to be clear in your intentions which one you are doing as it will dictate the amount of effort need to be put in.

If you want to be serious about this then it will take a lot of effort and I mean ALOT. Be prepared to spend 15-20 or so hours a week for 4-5 years before you are "anywhere near" MJ's moves in thriller / early bad era. To go beyond that late bad / dangerous era you would need another few years of hardcore workouts. I have been poppin and dancing for 13 years now and even after all these years MJ's moves from late bad / dangerous era are mind numbing. But you always keep moving forward.

keep these points in mind if you are serious about MJ's moves.

I have been fortunate to see many many impersonators over the years from Navi, E-cass to Christoph to Vegas professional impersonators and been fortunate to work with Bruno "Taco" Falcon (MJ's poppin and wave teacher).

There is something that most impersonators forget and a whole lot of other idiots’ non-MJ fans never understand. MJ's style was unique to him and he developed it over the years with elements incorporated from other great dancers but always adapted them to his bodily and physical needs not to mention, match his stage persona. You see a lot of people who don’t understand dance go like "well MJ was great but there were times on stage when he was not moving or not doing many moves".

Well, he didn't need to! This was a man who could hold a stadium's attention with just moving his fingers the way only he could. Why bother was useless waste of energy? So all of his moves were in-sync with not only his stage presence but his physical body needs (this is straight from Bruno's mouth BTW). Mj was a master of knowing his limits on stage. You never EVER saw him do a half-a$$ed move on stage!

And here is another important part.

When he was on stage... he was always on the beat as in dancing truly by definition. His walk (MJ's signature walk) was even on the beat if you observe carefully. When 95% of the impersonators do his moves they often forget the music part or doing it on the beat, thereby making their workout more aerobics than anything resembling MJ's on stage act.
Hate to say it but it just doesn't work in isolation without the beat. You have to move accordingly.

***Mj never did a move on the stage for the sake of doing moves as in filling up time! Lol :) that would be the greatest joke ever. Like he was on stage and all of a sudden he is like OMG I forgot what to do so I must do some moves to fill up time or look like I am dancing. He felt the music and that is something you can either do or not. No one can teach you that or not easily at least. Yes there were moments on stage where he missed choreographed sequence with others but that is different when he was on his own.

So the biggest problem or I should say challenge that MJ impersonator's feel is that when they go up the stage they need to resist the temptation of doing moves for the sake of doing them to look busy or whatever. Can you try to hold audience's attention like he did? Of course NOT! No one can and that’s what made his style unique to him. So it is a double edged sword either you keep doing moves or try to do what he did and not get the same effect. I would say the latter is lesser of the two evils. If you are not feeling the music or your moves are off, you are just doing exercise or whatever in my opinion.

So all in all what I am trying to say is that if you are trying to do MJ accurately, you have to follow the beat no matter what!* (see below at end) Resist the urge to do additional moves to "fill" up time because then you are thinking and that is something he would never do on stage while dancing. Keep at it and you will be good.

If you are just trying to have a good time then that is perfectly fine also. No harm in that! :) MJ is supposed to be feel good music anyways (or mostly). keep up the good work.

*Sure there were times when MJ would reverse that as in he would as his drummer to follow him as opposed to the other way around but then again he was MJ! :) That was his style and circumstances. Most of us cannot replicate them exactly if even anywhere near.

First of all, I have to congratulate you on doing an incredible job. The routine is clearly very carefully rehearsed and you sure did deserve that massive applause that the crowd gave you!

The only criticism I would have (and the poster above also mentioned this) is that once or twice, the moves weren't exactly on the beat, and this is most obvious when you guys turned your heads at different times during the Smooth Criminal dance.

However it's a slight criticism that you're bound to improve with time. I have to say that overall it was a very successful performance.
