You know, I've been listening to this song for so many times. I love it. It's really complicated, but the song is magnificent. After the last listening I realized one thing. I can't relax with this song. I just can't do it. All these noize sounds and really rough loud vocals, it feels like they made to kick your brains out. After thinking about this I came up with one theory. What if he did this on purpose? What if with Morphine song he wanted to show to the listeners his inner feelings, his physical pain, that his brain receives every single day?

I mean, this man got through the hell:

-Beaten up during his childhooh
-Pepsi accident, that caused him enormous amount of pain
-Lupus
-Vitiligo, leading to pain from sun

He had a lot of physical scars

What if Michael Jackson always felt some pain and only morphine and other drugs could give him some time for relief?

And that time of relief actually could be expressed by Michael in the bridge, which sounds so calm and peaceful… Unlike the other parts of the song.

So I see it in that way. Whole song is about Michael being sober, this harsh guitar Slash parts implies Michael pain, that he feels and lyrics tells us that he struggles with urge to use drugs again. Again, again and again. Then he finally gives up and takes some drugs. For a little moment we can witness Michael's relief, he feels no pain and then bridge ends with Michael sudden scream, which can imply end of drug effect or that he stands again to fight his addiction as music starts to sound rough and harsh again.

If this is really, what Michael tried to tell us with this song, then it's definately one of his greatest songwriting ever!

i think your right thinking if michael always felt pain. he probably did because all humans do experience some pain, negativity, rejection or just life every single day. its impossible to be happy all day every day. i like your thinking. your thoughts are cool and interesting. i like the song morphine.

'Morphine' is one of Michael Jackson's most honest songs.

Listeners who are or have been drug addicts can relate to this song.

It has been said that he wanted to release it as a single along with a music video, but Sony Music refused because it was an extremely dark song.

Yeah, you could also view this way: the softer parts are when you get hit by the drugs and you feel in paradise and weightless and everything. The angrier parts are when withdrawal hits in and you get angry and violent. I read an interpretation of the song once that sounded really interesting to me: the lyrics are written from the perspective of the drug itself.
