settling into Texas!
Hey guys!

I'm moving from Ireland to Austin, TX tomorrow! I'm starting grad school and am very excited about living there. I have been to Austin a few times and love the whole vibe of the city.

OK I'm opening this thread for a few reasons:
-just to explain my absence for the next days/weeks...of course I'll come on here when I can but i know I'll be busy sorting out classes and looking for somewhere to live, etc.

-to ask if anyone here lives in Austin and has any advice about moving there? I've lined up a few rooms to visit over the next few days. Any areas I should avoid, etc? I've heard bad things about the east but I know that's a sweeping generalisation, so any more specific info would be appreciated!

-also I think it'd be nice to get to know people who live in the same city or nearby; I'd especially love to meet fellow MJ fans so that's why I'm posting this here. Of course it'd be nice to go to see This Is It with other obsessives in October too!

Anyway I've done enough rambling ;) I hope someone responds! lol.

Hey! I lived in Austin! I loooove the city, as far as places to live, East isn't the best part that it's pretty slummy and a lot of homeless teens live there. I lived in the North/west part of Austin in the Cedar Park/ Lake Travis (which is very sad looking right now because of the drought) area and it BEAUTIFUL. It's a tad bit expensive but it's a great place to live. I would look in the Pflugerville area, they are north of Austin, close enough to the city, but still away from the city (rent isn't as expensive in that area as it would be in Austin itself). Hmm...what else, if you want music and everything else 6th street it the best place EVER. In march (?)SXSW (south by south west) happens and it's a huuuuge music festival with artist all over the world, it's one of the best music festivals. Also Austin City Limits music festival is awesome and it's going on in October. There is something always going on and the city itself is one of the best I've been to (the saying is "keep Austin weird"). BTW you NEED to eat at the Iguana Grill on Lake Travis, it has great food, great music, and you can not beat the view

Hi! Thank you so much for your reply! I feel like I'm getting to know the city really well just by visiting houses. Thanks for all your input. I'm hoping to find somewhere relatively central, so Pflugerville is a bit out right now. I guess as you said it's about balancing a nice place with the expense. I've seen about 5 places and my mind is a bit exhausted so I'm going to sleep on it. Thanks for the info on food and entertainment!! :D
