Does anybody know, how MJ was upgrading his songs during his lifetime? I mean, lets take a look on example. We have a song "Hollywood tonight". First demo of this song was recorded in 1999. Then MJ was worked on this song till 2008. But after his death Teddy Riley and other producers just picked his first demo and made their own mix with their music. But what about MJ's improvements... He was probably recording new demos of this song, new vocal part... So there is definately last demo version (made by MJ) somewhere...Another situation with Hold my hand, song was almost fully complete and released with MJ's last improvements....

Overall it isn't known, he spent a lot of his career reworking songs like Chicago 1945, Cheater, Red Eye, Scared Of The Moon and so on but the changes aren't known. Towards the end of his life he was reworking on a lot of his demos with Neff-U but Michael Prince said they didn't do any drastic changes, they only changed/added some sounds here and there. An example of that is Throwing Your Life Away, it was said by someone on the forum that it isn't different from the 1988 version and the only differences are that the song is 100% vocally complete and has a synth overdub throughout the song.

As he stated, he would usually work on five songs at any given time.

These songs were at various stages of completion.

He would return to those that he liked most in order to finish them properly (a process that would take even years).

Michael Jackson was mainly interested in how the melody should be.

That is why he used to carry a tape recorder with him in order to record the basic elements of the song, that is, the melody, the harmonic rhythm, and the bass hook, all of them emulated by his voice.

The rest of the work was usually done by his producers and musicians (because Michael Jackson could not play any musical instruments).

Apparently, he also recorded his vocals on many unfinished songs that he did not really like and that was because of the insistence of his collaborators.
