When they left their label (Stang Records), Sylvia Robinson said she owned their name. So that this couldn't happen again, the group used their own last names as the group's name (Ray, Goodman, & Brown).
I believe the name change wasn’t too upsetting for them. In fact, it was perfect for a fresh start.
 
Do we know if Tamla registered the names of any of the other groups that they signed?

I know that “The Temptations” became a registered trademark owned by Otis Williams and the estate of Melvin Franklin in 1976, but I’m not sure about the details.
