I’m honestly so excited for the Michael movie, just like everyone! We’ve been waiting for it for so long and we REALLY curious to see how it’s going to turn out. But what makes it even more special is knowing that his nephew is playing him. Like think about that for a second, It’s literally his own blood bringing him to life on screen and that’s very symbolic! I don’t even know if Michael ever really spent long time with his nephew but I know they had met and the last time was at some family gathering.
What I really don’t like though, is how people, mostly fans are reacting to the movie. There’s no sense of calm or realistic expectations. Some fans are already losing their minds, acting like this movie is going to break every record ever, that it will automatically be a 150% success and that his nephew is going to be the greatest actor of all time. Some even talk like he’s already the best actor ever and It’s ridiculous and a little weird. I can’t even imagine the pressure on Jaafar, he’s probably reading some of these comments and feeling the weight of trying to do justice to his uncle while not disappointing millions of fans. That’s a lot for anyone, especially someone stepping into the shoes of someone as iconic as Michael!
Personally, I think the movie is going to be really interesting!! There have been countless documentaries about bunch of artists and Michael already but this one feels official, like it’s coming from the family in some way and probably the most engaging we’ve had, that’s exciting on its own. But the way people are overreacting, talking about Oscars and all these awards before the movie has even fully shown anything, is just hilarious. They’ve barely shown the teaser, not even a full trailer and people are already acting like this is the cinematic event of the century 🤦🏻‍♀️
I don’t want to sound boring or preachy but
look at other famous biopics! The most famous one that comes to mind is bohemian rhapsody about queen. People were hyped about it for months, the actor who played Freddie Mercury got his awards, everyone was talking about it and then after that, almost nothing. The hype faded, the discussions stopped and only some fans really keep talking about the movie or critiquing it. Even then, many said it wasn’t 100% accurate or didn’t capture everything properly! That’s exactly what’s going to happen with the Michael movie too and I know it 100%. People going completely overboard right now, acting like it’s going to change cinema forever, will later calm down. They’ll start noticing things that aren’t fully accurate and they’ll become skeptical, that’s just how it works.
So my advice? Just calm down! Support the movie, yes, because it’s about Michael and it’s wonderful that people are talking about him again in a respectful, positive way. But there’s no need to go crazy, over analyze or build IMPOSSIBLE expectations. I truly believe his nephew wouldn’t take on a role that disrespects his uncle and neither would the family allow it. So just enjoy it, appreciate it and let it be what it is. That’s already enough!

Fantastic post 👏

These crazy expectations are quite frankly unrealistic. Breaking all box office records , Oscar wins etc I can’t see it happening.

For me, it’s quite telling that despite how well received the teaser was and the number of views it generated- there has been other trailers/teasers since that have done much better than Michael.

This film could potentially make 1 billion but it’s a big ask. Lower the expectations because you’re gonna end up disappointed

I honestly can't see this winning or even being nominated for any Oscars just for the simple fact that it's Michael Jackson.

The highest grossing music biopic is Bohemian Rhapsody with over $900 million. The 2nd is Elvis with just under $300 million. People just need to reign in the expectations for this just because a teaser trailer did well. A record breaking teaser and trailer ain't worth sh*t if the movie sinks in the 2nd week.

I don't really have any expectations about how it's going to do. Obviously I'd like it to do well and be a good movie but we won't know until it's already been out for a while.

2 billion easily in the first week , cause Michael is the best and the most loved celebrity to have ever lived.

You heard it first here 🙄

You’re probably right…

Also… I think fans need to stop expecting everything to be massively successful.
MJ already broke every record imaginable and is arguably the most famous person who ever lived. That bar doesn’t need to be reset every time something new drops.

Not everything related to MJ has to shatter records. I genuinely don’t care about streaming numbers or sales—MJ’s work will always do well because the fandom is enormous. But obsessing over the next billion streams on Spotify or YouTube? I really don’t get it.

Can we just enjoy the music we love without needing the whole world to lose its mind over it? Numbers say nothing about quality. Bad will always be a banger, whether it hits a billion streams or not.

Of course, every success comes to an end at some point- After Michael`s death there was a unseen and longlasting impact to the success of his music like never before seen after a death of a artist before and after that.
After the Bohemian Rhapsody there was a long-lasting effect on the success of Queen's music, I would say it has waned since a good year, so this was unseen before and after with a biopic.
So the question is really can the Michael biopic follow the success and impact what Bohemian Rhapsody did for Queen.

No.
The question is does it need to follow the success of BR and does it mean it’s a shit movie if it doesn’t 😅

I think it's interesting just to look at the language we're using. What the hell does it mean for a trailer to "do well"?! In my day trailers didn't "do well", lol. They're trailers. That's it. I find it quite pathetic that people are trying to claim some sort of victory because a lot of people streamed something. I don't know if it's insecurity or whatever, but that's just completely whack.

Exactly. But for some some reason, these people seem to take it as a personal insult if the movie doesn't get nominated for awards...

And anybody who disagrees must be a hater.

Exactly. It means nothing. I listen to MJ because I enjoy the music, not because he's popular. I couldn't care less who else listens to him. I could be the only person who's heard if him and it wouldn't bother me.

Why would I be proud of a song getting streamed on Spotify? It's not my achievement.

Can we just enjoy the music we love without needing the whole world to lose its mind over it? Numbers say nothing about quality. Bad will always be a banger, whether it hits a billion streams or not.
Exactly. Music isn't a competition. There's no such thing as "the best song ever made". I laugh in the face of anybody stupid enough to claim that.

Also, let other people like who they like. No need to force MJ down their throats.
