The choreography in the “You Rock My World” music video

So what do you think of the choreography in the YRMW music video? Some of the movements show stardom - like Michael’s shoulder pops and jumping on their feet while holding their jackets. The outfits were stellar - one of the greatest parts of this music video - like a darker version of Smooth Criminal.

I feel the dances didn’t introduce any “new” dance movements (like the “lean” and the “robot”). And the dance sequences were short in duration - shorter than in other music videos. But I felt the look (costumes, giving swag and attitude) was great. It certainly was entertaining choreography from the early 2000s. ❤️

I remember watching the video premiere and thinking that all of the build-up would lead to an amazing dancing sequence, but it was just that —a build-up made out of short, interrupted bursts of so-so dancing, and then it was over.

It was a big disappointment, just like the whole video (a Smooth Criminal retread) and the album.

MJ put in the least possible effort, and the project was chaotic. It showed.
 
Have you noticed that the man's face has completely disappeared from the poster at the beginning? I wonder if that could be a malicious innuendo by the director.

Another interesting detail is that he's standing on the counter, throwing bottles at playing cards and a text with "no fighting" – is he for or against it? After all, he does fight the villains shortly afterwards.

Michael seemed to be a big fan of that movie because it inspired so many songs. Dangerous lyrics too.

What was the name of the song he performed with a similar white suit and a hat in the 70s? It was some tv show performance. I have been searching for it on Youtube but its hard when you don't remember the name.

Sounds like the variety show? If so, Wikipedia has a list of all the songs they performed in every episode.
 
Everything in the 'You Rock My World' music video looks underwhelming.

For example, Michael Jackson himself does not dance as sharply as he used to.

The participation of the American comedian Chris Tucker is out of place here.

The overall cinematic feel looks too polished, and hence unrealistic.

One would even say that Michael Jackson's face in that music video looks like AI-generated.

I think it's a cool video. Not the most original thing he ever did of course. The edited version of the video is the best way to watch it for me, which I don't often feel about MJ.
 
Remember it premiered on top of the pops here in the UK, then the following day it was on constant repeat on most music channels (when you were able to phone in or text a video request)

It did feel like something he had done before but it was still enjoyable , it holds up really well today.

On TikTok the song is trending with many people (hot girls) strutting to the music
 
I wonder if i would enjoy the video more if his face was deepfaked with a younger version of him. This sounds terrible I know, but the way he looked in that video really made it difficult to like it..

It’s not terrible as it was the truth , he didn’t look good appearance wise in 2001, the issue is obviously the pencil thin nose and the poor make up. Only 4 years earlier he looked great in the BOTDF video.

During the 00s the best I seen him look was in 09 during TII, he really looked like MJ the music star again with the curls and whatever reconstructive surgery he had done. He was extremely underweight though as we all know

I have never thought of it like that. I guess if Mj was able express his face like he used too then it could have been better

The only thing I would say regarding his in the video is he seems to get out of breath quickly. This could be if he having to breath through his mouth instead of his nose. Either way what other performer could move as fast as MJ at 42.
 
This stumbling step also has something prophetic about it when you look at the Invincible era. Unfortunately, the album stumbled over so many obstacles that it simply could no longer become a great success. But what remains is the great music.

It's also important to note that, even with Smooth Criminal, the setting and the Band Wagon inspiration were suggested by the director. When it came to videos, MJ ok'd ideas that usually came from the directors that the studio hired.

Are you sure? Wikipedia says choreographer Vincent Peterson came up with the idea of the 30s gangster club setting. Then in this interview with the music video director he says that it was Michael’s tribute to Fred Astaire:

Both of those facts can be true at once. Peterson came up with the concept, and MJ agreed, the video becoming thus a tribute by MJ to Fred Astaire.
 
I have always liked the YRMW video, maybe because I loved the song as a kid and I'm very nostalgic about watching it a lot. I feel like it's doing a great job, even the dance section, yeah it's short but I really love the moves, and it's like moving almost all of the video. Enjoyable.

It would have been definitely better as a whole if YRMW hadn't been the lead single of the album and like the third video of the album, to have that little nostalgia/SC/TWYMMF inspired video + Dangerous inspired choreo

Great song, great video, just shouldn't have been the main/first one
