We know it originally showed MJ's face smiling. The cover for the 2001 special edition only showed his socks and shoes. I thought the cover only changed for the special edition, but this 1993 news report shows the same cover with the socks and shoes @ 0:40

So, the cover changed long before 2001? From what I've gathered on Discogs, the cover was first changed to the socks and shoes sometime in the early 1990s, which is news to me; all this time, I thought it only changed for the special edition. I never liked that as the front cover, though; the front should show MJ's face and upper body, and the back should show his socks and shoes as it did originally.

The only one that matters is the first one. That will always be the original cover. I wouldn't worry about the rest.

Why MJ change the cover tho. He didn't change any of his other codes

That's not an MJ album
MJ was the driving force behind it.

^ doesn't matter. It was Michael who had initiated the removal of the dove from Randy's shoulder on subsequent pressings.

Michael was part The Jacksons. And as I've stated earlier, he initiated it.
You said he was the driving force of the album but he was only contributed to half the album (and only sang lead on three tracks)

Not an MJ album famalam

He was actually, despite him not too prominent on it.

But what I meant was that Michael's responsible for the bird removal.

There are OTW covers with the upper body.
There are ones with only the legs.
There are ones with the whole body (head to toe).
But it’s always the same picture.

Speaking of. I came across two versions of victory lp at a used store today. the regular one without the dove and the picture vinyl with the original dove design.

I thought the cover was meant to be the entire pictures of Michael from his head to his feet, the top part being the main one and the entire "vertical" picture using both side of a vinyl 12inch LP record cover. Then on some editions, they played around with it because why not.

Destiny and Victory and also Maybe Tomorrow were mean to use "both sides" of 12 inch LP cover with 1 picture.
Thought Destiny and Victory aren't suited at all to use the "second" part of the picture as cover, while Maybe Tomorrow "could" but that would make it more "Jermaine-centered".

Edit: Actually, the peocock part of Destiny's cover could possible make a colourul album cover on it own. Maybe using some crop.
Edit: Goin' Places , Thriller and Michael also have pictures that could extend past the album front cover, but I don't think they were ever used as front+back cover.

Victory album cover has been changed/altered.😉
Many other albums had altered/alternative covers sometimes (not counting MoFi OneStep or some Motown re-issues part of re-issue series type alteration where the original picture is placed in a smaller frame, also not counting very country-specific releases such as Mexico and Japan) :

  • Maybe tomorrow (different cover showing the 5 brothers used on several re-issues)
  • Ben (rat removed)
  • Live/In Japan! (some 80s reissue)
  • Get It Together (with and without letter cut)
  • Thriller (on some editions: alternative pictures similar to the original one)
  • Farewell My Summer Love (some 80s reissue)
  • Bad (cassette versions show a part of MJ's legs, font changes, Bad 25 using an alternative picture, possibly more changes...)
  • Invincible (5 different colours)
  • Xscape (silver and gold cover)
  • (I may be have missed stuff.)
  • Edit: Victory (dove removed, cassette cover show more from the road)

The cassette versions used the full photograph as the cover.

Most LP and CD releases before 2001 used the top photograph with MJ's face as the front cover, and his socks and shoes as the back cover.
