In the rehearsals Michael can be seen using the headset mic a lot. Even for songs that were performed with a normal mic before like Billie Jean, Thriller, Beat It, Man in the Mirror, IJCSLY etc. Then on June 23th he rehearsed Beat It and IJCSLY with a normal mic.

Do you think he was planning to switch to the headset mic for some new songs or they just didn't care which was used when rehearsing? It could be the latter which I find a bit odd decision. Also I just like the normal mic a lot more. I feel like the usage of the headset was the reason why he seemed to do some things very differently than before. When you just hold the normal mic you don't have to come up with new things to do with your hands.

Those early rehearsals where Michael is wearing a headset for songs like Billie Jean and IJCSLY weren’t production rehearsals, so there was no real reason for him to change to a handheld mic.

It was convenience more than anything else. With the headset, he could always have it on and use it when necessary, without having to disconnect it.

You can also see that compared to the June 23rd rehearsal, he doesn’t really change his clothes during those early rehearsals.
