What titles do we know of when it comes to song outtakes from the Jackson 5 and Michael?

I think I have only heard the 1973 and the updated mix of the 1984 version of “you really got a hold on me”.
So there is a 1969 version?

Yes, it was released on the collection MOTOWN SINGS MOTOWN TREASURES in 1998. It was only released in a MONO mix. It is the basis of the same track that was released on MOTOWN UNRELEASED 1969 but the version on there had Bobby Taylor singing lead with the J5 doing backgrounds. The one released in 1998 had MJ doing the lead.

I hope Motown can use yet unreleased materials to release a second Christmas album (given there are so many leftovers), the Stevie Wonder produced album and a covers album. But of course I hope they can release more albums with unreleased music ;)
I emailed Keith Hughes about Jackson 5 Christmas outtakes and he says he couldn't find any in the vault.

I think it must just be a rumour. If they had an abundance of Christmas outtakes I think Motown would either have released a second Christmas album based on how well the first one sold or the outtakes would have surfaced on the Ultimate Christmas collection in 2009.

I put this list together about 10 years ago of all the J5 era sessions. It does not list the Christmas Album sessions although those took place around July or August of 1970.

To this day, I'm still shocked how easily you were able to come up with this. How'd you manage to find out when they were recorded?

Thanks to this thread, I finally managed to listen to every Motown song and I discovered a lot of gems that I’m sure I’ll be listening to again.

Well I started with all the dates that had been officially listed and mentioned in CD booklets. For instance, a lot of the tracks on SOULSATION had the recording dates attached. Same thing with FAREWELL MY SUMMER LOVE. All the dates were listed. If you start with the dates listed and put them in that sequence you can start to determine with your ears which other tracks were recorded around the same time depending on the level of pitch and sound in MJs voice. Also you have live shows to use as a comparison point including the two Live at the Forum concerts and the Live in Japan album. All of those have the dates listed. You can tell which songs were recorded around those if you listen closely to the voice and timbre. I have been studying MJs young voice for 30 years now so I am very tuned to every slight nuance and change month to month. Sure, I am sure I have some of the months wrong but based on the info that was released I think my list is very close to what the real list actually is. In some cases I am going with my best educated guess. When I did the original list back in the mid 2000's I spent weeks analyzing tracks, listening to tracks side to side to listen to comparisons. Also, some of the write ups in the CD booklets over the years have also given info. I remember the booklet to BOOGIE in 2004 mentions that ONE DAY I'LL MARRY YOU is from the same sessions that produced NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE. Also I believe in LOOKING BACK TO YESTERDAY it mentions that GIVE ME HALF A CHANCE Is from the NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE sessions also. I took all those pieces of info and compiled them into a master list. The same thing with the SOULSATION booklet. Lots of info there. Bobby Taylor discusses how he was cutting some very soulful tracks with the J5 and was fired during the session for MONEY HONEY. So using that info and that A FOOL FOR YOU was listed in February 1970 I could easily assume that MAN'S TEMPTATION was from that same session followed by MONEY HONEY. It's using all the little puzzle pieces of info that have come out over the years to compile a final list.

This is the list I made using that other list when I was compiling my mp3 disc to burn.
Although I have never seen proof of it, I think there was possibly going to be a full album called SUGAR DADDY that would have come out at the end of 71 or early 72 but they kept recording and it eventually was released as LOOKING THROUGH THE WINDOWS and the song "Sugar Daddy" ended up on the GREATEST HITS album. In this list I split those sessions based on the dates into the SUGAR DADDY sessions and the LOOKING THROUGH THE WINDOWS sessions.

These collections can be made and listened to on streaming sites as playlists with the exception of a few tracks listed that are still "unreleased" but have leaked (To Sir With Love, Lavender Blue, I've Gotta Be Me, After The Storm, Be My Girl, She Say Want). Every other track is available on streaming.

I use YOUTUBE MUSIC because you are able to upload tracks into the system and listen to them alongside what is in their system. That is how I listen to these playlists with the leaked unreleased material

I had always suspected that Don't Let You Baby Catch You had actually been recorded during Diana Ross Presents or ABC sessions. So it would be ABC. Thanks.

Where did all this info come from? (<-- EDIT: OK, you apparently replied to this question at the same time I was writing.)

  • Everybody’s Somebody’s Food
Yes, also know as Dog Eats Dog ;-)

Yes, I asked Harry Weigner that same question years ago and he also mentioned there was no unreleased Christmas outtakes in the vault. I'm not sure where that info ever came from listing all those tracks. Where was the source for that?

Now that I know for sure, I've removed the Christmas sessions from the list. Thanks for the info!

An album fully produced by Bobby Taylor would have been so cool, likewise for Stevie Wonder
