Help Haiti - International Donation Information HERE!

In light of the terrible Earthquake in Haiti, please all add donation information from your countries in this thread. Every little helps! In the spirit of Michael, lets do what we can to heal the world and make a difference.

I just read a message from Wyclef Jean on facebook:

If you're in the USA and you want to help with relief efforts in Haiti, you can text 'Yele' to 501501 to donate $5 to YELE HAITI. For those others around the world, you can still help by donating at www.yele.org. Let's all put those affected by the earthquake in our thoughts and prayers. They need us.

Something important to think about when choosing an organisation:

I know it's been posted before, but be VERY careful of where you donate. CNN is now warning about scams. The organization must be a reputable non-profit, not just some people collecting money. The reputable ones will have an internet presence, a mailing address, phone, and so on, and will probably be organizations you've already heard of. I also heard some good advice, which is to donate to organizations that already had a presence in Haiti, such as Doctors Without Borders. They had three hospitals there, but none are usable now. They have sent up hospital tents, and are continuing to work. . even though there has been loss-of-life among their staff. I'd put that organization very high on the donation list, if not at the top.

Also be careful of those who say they are collecting FOR other organizations. The donations can go directly to those organizations, not through a third-party.

It is just awful what has happened in Haiti. I'm am going to look and see what site I can donate a little money to where they money will help medically with supplies, rescue, that sort of thing. I can only imagine the state of their EMS system right now. Firetrucks and ambos are probably buried... hospitals have collapsed.... it's just really bad :(

Re: The Daily News Jan 13 - Our thoughts and prayers goes out to the people of Haiti

This was all over twitter last night/early hours of this morning. We've got to help.

You can find out direct whats happening from Wyclef Jean - he's heading to Haiti now -

http://twitter.com/wyclef

You can donate via Wyclef Jean's site mentioned up there www.yele.org and he organised a text donation - $5 when you text 'Yele' to 501501

- problem is - is this international or does it just work for those in the US?

I'm glad the world is coming together to help.

or dropping off financial donations at the closest Salvation Army unit in your area.
Donors should specify their gift to the Haiti Earthquake Disaster Relief Fund.

Re: The Daily News Jan 13 - Our thoughts and prayers goes out to the people of Haiti

There are many ways you can help. Just Google "Haiti relief" or "Haiti relief effort." Here is just one of them.

http://www.haitiaction.net/About/HERF/HERF.html

My state of Virginia has an international search-and-rescue team that will be there in a couple of hours, including canine teams.

This is a terrible disaster. Haiti was already the Western hemisphere's poorest country. Port au Prince, the capital, has been completely destroyed. We must pray for the people of Haiti, including those who were there from other nations with various NGOs and aid agencies. Hold everyone in your hearts.

Re: The Daily News Jan 13 - Our thoughts and prayers goes out to the people of Haiti

It's just so sad that this have to happen to the poorest of all the countries. As time goes by, the loss and damage will be more updated. I hope they will continue to find more and more survivors. What they need the most now is clean water, food, medicine and shelter.

This is so sad.

Re: The Daily News Jan 13 - Our thoughts and prayers goes out to the people of Haiti

Right, in donating make sure the organization has tax-exempt status, and a history. There are many valid organizations, including religious-affiliated groups, Non Governmental Agencies, and so on. Uhm, after what happened in the debacle of the aftermath of Katrina, I'm staying entirely away from the Red Cross. That's my own opinion (no need for anyone to share it). I'd look for agencies who already have teams on the ground in Haiti, such as organizations that help children, medical volunteers, and so on. Also search-and-rescue teams, such as the one based in Virginia. And among those, those that have DOGS. The canine teams are of immense value in situations like this one.

They are now saying that 100,000 people have died. I can't begin to imagine. Everyone, do the best you can with prayers and donations. (Isn't that what Michael would do? Of COURSE it is.)

Re: The Daily News Jan 13 - Our thoughts and prayers goes out to the people of Haiti

DRESDEN, Germany (AFP) – The late pop legend Michael Jackson will be awarded a posthumous prize for his global charity work at an opera gala in Germany this week, organisers said Wednesday.

The director of Friday's Semper Opera Ball Hans-Joachim Frey, said the King of Pop would be recognised for his humanitarian efforts at the glittering society event in the restored Baroque city of Dresden.

Jackson's elder sister La Toya, a guest of honour at the ball, would receive the award.

"Michael Jackson supported 39 foundations and charity projects, started his own foundation and donated a total of more than 300 million dollars," Frey said.

At the same event, where more than 2,000 guests are expected, Spanish tenor Jose Carreras will accept a prize for artistic achievement.

Jackson died suddenly last June at the age of 50. His humanitarian work focused heavily on children's charities.

Re: The Daily News Jan 13 - Our thoughts and prayers goes out to the people of Haiti

Right, they need donations -

UK people -

Oxfam - https://www.oxfam.org.uk/donate/haiti-earthquake/index.php

Unicef - (Haiti Earthquake Children's Appeal)
http://www.unicef.org.uk/emergency/emergency_detail.asp?emergency=63

Christian Aid - http://www.christianaid.org.uk/emergencies/current/haiti-earthquake-appeal/index.aspx?gclid=CKL9qJCAop8CFR9o4wodF1rtIQ

For other countries - Search Unicef and other organisations in your country to see if they have a Haiti emergency appeal.
