HISTORICAL DATES
1979 – The Jacksons perform their Destiny Tour in Bournemouth, UK.
1983 - Jane Fonda presents Michael with a Platinum certification for "Thriller" at the CBS Press conference.
1986 - Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie are honored at the 28th Grammy Awards from Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California. with the "Best Song of the Year" award for "We Are The World", the relief single they wrote for the "USA For Africa" project in 1985. Michael and Lionel accepted the award for the Song of the Year together. Michael stepped to the podium, dressed in black uniform jacket and red shirt, with several gold pins. On accepting the award he makes a brief speech: "First, I’d like to thank God, and I’d like to say thank you for choosing Lionel and myself to write "We Are The World". I thank Quincy Jones, who was the greatest producer to me. And I also like to say, when you leave here, remember the children. Thank you."
1998 - Michael attends the investiture ceremony of then South Korean President, Kim Dae-jung, one of the century’s astute fighters for democracy and 2000 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. He stays in Seoul, South Korea from February 20 to February 27. Kevin Sullivan reporter of Washington Post, who met with Michael at the event, states that Michael's purpose for his being present at the event was because Michael praised Kim Dae-jung's commitment to children, and was considering a concert to benefit starving children in Korea and around the world. Michael had also visited Kim Dae Jung in 1997, and returned with his benefit concert (MJ and Friends) in 1999. A day after Michael passed, former South Korean president, Kim Dae-jung, says “the world has lost a hero and Korea also lost a beloved friend, who showed continued interest and supported unification of Korean peninsula. Korean people are sad.” Less than two months later he also passed on due to a multiple organ dysfunction.
2002 - A press release announces that Neverland Entertainment formed by Michael Jackson and Raju Sharad Patel will join with Damon’s independant film company MDP Worldwide Entertainment to create a new division called Neverland Pictures. The following day Michael, Elizabeth Taylor & Brett Ratner attend a party hosted by Mark Damon to announce the venture and sign the contracts. Michael Jackson stated: "Both Raju and I love the way classic stories can be reinvented for the screen. My favorite movies such as Raju's 'Jungle Book' and 'Pinocchio' were re-imagined as major features, and were produced outside the traditional studio system. Films have always been a passion for me as a fan and as an artist and there is nothing in the world like the magic captured forever in a time capsule like motion picture images. Raju and I are very excited to be joining together with MDP Worldwide and Mark Damon, who has a very successful track record as an independent producer and distributor." Before the venture could be realized, Raju Patel became ill and died of Cancer in 2005.
2005 - Michael goes to court to attend the final preliminary hearing before his trial starts on February 28th.
