Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary - Estate Announcement Page 66

Yes, I know. But it's probably not attached for the same reason a Victory tour dvd would never be attached to a Thriller re-release.

I love how they make it sound like Off The Wall is this old obscure album that young college kids haven't heard of lol. There are pre-teens today who know about Off The Wall

oh, honey, no.
There are kids today who don't even know who Destinys Child is, let alone Michael material that isn't Thriller related.
These damn kids today with their Myspaces and twatters.
Don't know anything!

I'm still wondering how to get tickets. Is it sold out? Buying them is pretty confusing. Anybody attending?

I'm glad Questlove and Pharrell in particular are among them, especially for this album.

Agreed. It would be fun if Pharrell remixed few songs for this release. For example if he did 2 songs and Timbaland 2 songs. That would be cool.

Just as I thought. It's £21 on UK Amazon. Asking fans to pay that price tag just for a documentary is disgusting.

Don't buy it.
"Following its premiere on SHOWTIME, it will be broadcast in other territories around the world and those air-dates will be announced by the local broadcaster in each market."

BBC bought rights to show Bad25, so I'm certain they do the same with OTT documentary.

Do you mean how to get ticket to Sundance festival where Spike's documentary will be screened first?
Here is ticket info: http://www.sundance.org/festivals/sundance-film-festival/get-tickets

Actually this link is directly to tickets to MJ doc

On different note, what happen to length of the documentary?
Earlier it was
RUN TIME 110 minutes
now that link shows RUN TIME 93 min? I want those 17 minutes:uhuh

Well, If I'm not mistaken, they already announced the tracklist. Didn't they? It's on amazon. There is no remixes.

I reacted to what you said.

Remixes would absolutely not add anything to this release for me.

I wish there were demos, though.

You said: "Oh, please no.". So you should be happy as there is no remixes on this release.

But you should know that your opinion and musical taste are not superior in any way than mine or anyone else's. I would love to hear/have Pharrell remixes of Off The Wall tracks because I love Pharrell and I think he would do a great job remixing them. Remixes would absolutely not add anything to this release for you, but it would for other people/fans who appreciate good remixes. There is nothing wrong with that.

No one said my taste is superior. But IMO if someone wants to listen to Pharell or Timbaland they should buy Pharell and Timbaland records for that. MJ records should remain MJ records. We had enough of Timbaland on Xscape. Should he now remake all of MJ's catalog or what?

For me better remixes than nothing.

New (studio/posthumous) albums are one thing, re-releases are something completely different. Also producing/finishing unreleased and/or unfinished songs is one thing, remixing already released songs is something completely different.

I just think it would be fun to hear Pharrell and even Timbaland remixes of those classic songs. It would definitely boost up the sales of this re-release and make it more interesting and relevant for non-fans.

Or they should have just release DVD/blu-ray as standalone discs. They already released new pressings of OTW in 2015 so people could have just bought those if they want it.

I'm with Respect on this one. The remixes on Bad 25 stand out like a sore thumb, eternally skipped. Pretty much like all remixes since 2006 really, for me.

As Respect said also, we have had enough Timbaland. More than enough. In fact, way too much. I personally can't stand Pharell either.

Demos and outtakes or nothing. I'm glad they opted for nothing over remixes.

Interesting opinion. I'm always for more material.

But if it's the same exact album, then in my opinion they should have just release the DVD/blu-ray as standalone discs and create a special package of DVD/or blu-ray with already released 2015 pressing. Like they did with Number Ones (CD+DVD) and Dangerous (CD+DVD). That new cover with piece of chalk sounds cheap to me. This type of release without remixes or any other additional material doesn't make sense to me.

I was under the illusion that the CD/DVD andf CD/BluRay will be sold as 2 separate packages??? Or am I wrong?

Non-fans would simply buy the remix, if that's what they were interested in, and would not give out $22 for the whole package. If someone cannot appreciate OTW without some lame remix by some currently hip artist then the whole album is probably not for that person and such a person is never going to be an MJ fan, anyway.

I don't think the remixes moved anything for Bad25, did they?

Hardly. I must admit I actually enjoy the Nero Speed Demon mix, but I have never once actively selected to listen to it on my iPod! Always a shuffle surprise

They will. CD/DVD and CD/BluRay. But they could have done that without re-releasing the album! That is my point. Re-releasing the album without adding any extra material to it is pointless to me. It's unnecessary expense even for them. Why print new covers, booklets... just for the piece of chalk?

What I said is that they should have release the documentary on DVD and blu-ray and pair it with already released 2015 pressing of the original album as a package. Similar to what they did with Number Ones (CD+DVD) and Dangerous (CD+DVD).

I am excited to watch the documentary I hope it will be good. I don't think that this project will have very good sales numbers tho. I think that if enough people see this on tv it may be great exposure for future projects. I'm ok with no remixes, would have liked some demos. I for one won't purchase another off the wall album I already have 2 copies. I'm telling you there is a big release coming sometime this year. Be patient it will come.

For me Nero remix was pretty great. Afrojack remix was ok. Pitbull inclusion was wrong, bad and unnecessary.

But on Bad 25 you had plenty of extra material. And even without the remixes the album was worth re-buying. On this re-release you will get piece of chalk. That's what I'm saying. Better something than nothing if they are already re-releasing the album.

If thats a typo its a classic. If its not its even better?

I don't think anyone expects big sales from a re-release of an old album. Including the Estate. Apparently they learnt their lesson from Bad25, that such a release will never move big numbers and so they do not really put any effort into it now. A pity because it should not always be only about money and sales.

I think they could have done it better for fans and for artistic reasons. Chalk? Really? I'm not sure if they are mocking us or what. LOL. Imagine chalk being packaged with a Beatles album or a Bob Dylan album as "bonus material". Laughable.

I think it could have been made a good project for digging a bit deeper into MJ's artistry. Since there is a documentary attached, which hopefully does something to introduce MJ's artistry, creative process (at least it should, although I have to say I was not totally satisfied with Bad25 in that regard) I think it would be a no-brainer to include all the demos of the songs on the album - yes, even those which we already have. As in the docu his brothers hopefully will explore how they were created etc. Plus the demos that we don't yet officially have - ICHI and GOTF (I am so disappointed that they don't include these, that GOTF demo is everything!). And if there is nothing else from that era additionally then I would not have minded Sunset Driver being included. And then you have a full OTW era package. The way it is now, there is a demo on Ultimate Collection, there is one somewhere else, there are those unreleased etc. It's all over the place. If for nothing else they could have used this project to start to get things a bit better organized, so to speak.

While it is very laudable to aim a release at new fans, I didn't realise they meant the very, very young! Do we really want chalk dust all over our packaging? (and everything else it touches)? Sadly chalkboard only makes me think of school and people screeching chalk down it to set your teeth on edge. Not a very harmonious association.

From their statement "gives fans a chance to get creative with Michael’s original concept for the album artwork. (You’ll see when you get it!) "

I'm assuming they mean the chalkboard + chalk was Michael's original concept for the album artwork.

perhaps some but not many. Thriller is the only album many college kids only knows.

The only 2 plus's to this release is that 1. Michael at last gets the recognition that this album deserved when it was first released. I mean some of the songs on off the wall sound far better and have much more melody than a lot of current day.

2. That the title track gets a re-release and is heralded as the forgotten GEM it is I love the ***** melody and sound of ,OTW it is my favorite track from this album and maybe even a few of his albums.

3. It actually is coming on bluray and not just DVD!

Estate i do think you needed to add something else like extended versions of songs or demos but you will see this is sales if you do not consider away of adding extra.

I'm late to this, so here is my thoughts.

I love Off The Wall, not my favourite but it's still amazing, really glad a genius like Spike is doing the documentary.
I can't understand why the Estate are going to rerelease the album on CD, they should capitalize on vinyl coming back into fashion.

I'm not sure why they're pushing the boat out so much for this album though, as it's not it's 25th anniversary like it is for Dangerous this year, and that album is criminally underrated by the public and media. Plus there is loads more footage from that era also tons and tons worth of demos and early versions. Really hope we still get a Bad 25 style re-edition.

Last thing, which song was the most successful from Xscape? Love Never Felt So Good. What year was that recorded? 1980 (Off The Wall era) :cheeky: have a great day

The single's success had little to do with the OTW era. The promotion and airplay time budget, the two versions (solo and duet) and the video for this song were huge compared to the other songs. If the other songs got the same PR attention maybe we could compare them and say it's an OTW thing but they didn't.
