What is your favorite thing about your least favorite song?

I have to establish a least favorite song first which is kind of hard. None of his songs are hated but of course I have a couple I never listen to. Lets say it is threatened. What I like about that song is that percussive styled sound that seems to be made by plucking some kind of strings (hard to explain lol) that is played during the verses.

There is a whole lot I don’t like about the song

I'll answer this for real now lol

It's hard for me to say what song is my least favorite just as much as it's hard for me to say what is my favorite song so I'll go for my least favorite songs of each album.

OTW - Girlfriend: I genuinely got nothing nice to say about it, it's amongst one of the worst songs MJ has ever put out and it's a shame to call it a MJ song.

Thriller - The Girl Is Mine: I prefer the demo but I love MJ's vocals on the chorus.

Bad - Liberian Girl: MJ's vocals on the verses sounds soothing and I love the chords on the bridge.

Dangerous - In The Closet: Again, I've nothing nice to say about it, I find the melody irritating lol. It's interesting to hear MJ's deep voice when he performs it during the HIStory tour though.

HIStory - Smile: The piano part at the end where MJ is singing along.

BOTDF - All the remixes: No comment. The Earth Song remix is alright but it's weird that they made a song that's supposed to be about raising environmental awareness into a club song lol.

Invincible - The Lost Children: I actually don't dislike the song but I dislike how little MJ sings on it, half of the song is just an instrumental with children sounds on it thus makes it my least favorite song of the album. I like the breakdown though.

Some of these choices are straight up crazy, seriously, In the Closet? Do you just have hearing problems? Ngl, I'm scared of you.

I won't fault anyone picking on girlfriend, it's an easy target. But the bassline is pretty sick. And MJ's version is way better than Maccas, moldy sheets is it bad.

Listening to your least favorite MJ song, what is your favorite thing about it?
Tricky, since I rarely listen to them, lol. Brazenly nicking ChancetoDance's idea of going through each album bc I genuinely don't have just one overall 'least fave' song:

OTW - SOOML - The first 40 seconds of the song, before Michael starts to sing. The best part is the first 8 seconds, just that lovely string arrangement. The guitar comes in at 23s and that's pretty good, too. After that I don't wanna know.

Thriller - TGIM - Louis Johnson on bass. Wouldn't say it's his best bass line but it's the only thing I can stand from this song. Which isn't saying much. Love Michael's demo version and the acapella bits from Mexico depo. Obviously!

Bad - Liberian Girl - the opening 20s is OK. There's some nice percussion from the ever-fabulous Paulinho da Costa, just not quite good enough for me to ever want to listen to the song.

Dangerous - Can't Let Her Get Away - uh, does this have some handclaps on it? That's what it sounds like to me. Those are OK.

HIStory - D.S. - the guitar is OK.

BOTDF - Ghosts (bc I'm ignoring the remixes, they don't exist in my world) - tough one, this, bc I like the song. It's just my least fave out of the five. Best thing? Michael's voice.

Invincible - Privacy - Nathan East on bass, I believe. Also the string arrangements are good.

I may be one of the few, but I really love Liberian Girl. I don't think I have anything negative to say about the song at all.
It's different, it's intruiging, it's sad, it's happy, it's malancholia, it's hope - what a blend. The lyrics are fine and the musical arrangement is amazing.
I would have love Liberian Girl to be a single, it really deserves more attention and more praise.

The song gets a lot of love. I think it's me who's in the minority. :ROFLMAO:

It was a single. It got to No.1 in Ireland, IIRC.

What? Are you telling me people don’t dig LG? I’m… speechless! I have no speech! I’m totally with you on this one, LG’s my jam.

By the way, it was a single! (In Europe; see Discogs)

I agree about Girlfriend insomuch it’s my least favourite song off of Off the Wall (pretty cool string of words there, eh?). But I’m always fascinated by it when comparing it to Wings’ version, it’s a good study object being a masterclass in Quincy Jones arrangement!

The flute, aaah, the flute!

I hope so. The rhythm section of that song is out of this world. Da Costa is on fire. And the vocals—the stacks!—are something else entirely.
Um, OK. The percussion is OK here but Da Costa is so much better elsewhere, imo, so I can't get that stoked about it.

Stealing my comments before I’ve typed them.
I see. Me posting something at approx 1hr 15 mins before you did constitutes 'stealing'? I see. We are rewriting the English language lexicon.

Fine! :ROFLMAO:

Back on topic - you almost - ALMOST - got me to go and check out the rhythm section of LG. Bc it's never reached me before.

Actually, I might have a go later. You never know ...

These are some big words.

Stop it! I won’t have it! You’re out of your tree.
Dangerous - Can't Let Her Get Away - uh, does this have some handclaps on it? That's what it sounds like to me. Those are OK.
Would you get outta that garden!
HIStory - D.S. - the guitar is OK.
You pulling my leg? The guitars are probably my least favourite thing about D.S.

the only part of ‘state of shock’ I like is when michael sings: ‘she looks so great every time I see her face..’
it’s a welcome departure from the monotony of the guitar riff, and the only slightly redeeming feature for me. it’s also good to hear michael’s voice unaccompanied..

Not too sure about that. It’s all about the agogic, and those Liberian Girl patterns from Da Costa reflects his whole career, in a way. It may look simple at a glance, but boy would you be wrong!

I hadn’t gotten that far in the thread yet, dug gamit! 😠

Look, I already said I'll give LG a listen later today.

Would you get outta that garden!
CLHGA. What can I say? This is a song to write my grocery list to. :ROFLMAO:

Oh, I don't really *like* those D.S. guitars. I just was scraping the barrel to find something, anything, to say about the song. As per the thread title.

As for Ghosts - well, it's up against Is It Scary and Morphine. I can live without Ghosts, I can't live without those two. I wouldn't even want to try.

Not too sure about that. It’s all about the agogic,
Um, OK. You stay over there being a musician and I'll stay over here being that person who goes, 'I know what I like and I like what I know' (ooh, Genesis. Yes!). :ROFLMAO:

Seriously, tho'. I don't listen to music in a technical way. I don't have those skills. It's all much more basic for me.

and those Liberian Girl patterns from Da Costa reflects his whole career, in a way.
I'll take your word for it. I haven't studied what he does. I just go, 'Awesome!' at regular intervals. It begins and ends there, for me. :ROFLMAO:

It may look simple at a glance, but boy would you be wrong!
No, no, I don't think what he's doing is simple. In fact, that's one reason I love his work so much. The complexity, the layers, the texture, the nuance, the richness, the excitement, the joy, the storytelling - my god, the storytelling of the man!!!

He definitely isn't doing simple stuff but it still has to reach me and if it doesn't, well, I'm gone!

I hadn’t gotten that far in the thread yet, dug gamit! 😠
:ROFLMAO:

The takeaway here is that we both love and respect Da Costa. Bc it always seems to me he doesn't get as much attention as other people Michael worked with. Perhaps I'm imagining it. But he deserves all the love and more. :D

@ChanceToDance you literally picked 6 songs I love 😅
That's payback for dissing Threatened 🙃

All my opinions are objectively true

I'm not a fan of the instrumental and the moaning sounds on the song is cringey to me, I thought of putting Keep The Faith instead because of how little I listen to it but at least it doesn't irk me when I listen to it lol.

The single version is better, I'll give you that. Less sounds.
