Do you like the "king of pop" title?

I like the title, and also the fact that in so many years no one has come even close to claiming that title. Is it limiting - maybe, but is it fitting - yes! He totally dominated Pop culture Worldwide! No one else has that reach.
Actually, several other artists have come very close to claiming that title, and certain of them even also got that title.

For example, American singer Frank Sinatra (the greatest male pop singer in the history of America, according to many people) has been also described as 'King Of Pop' with an amazing array of hit songs and albums under his belt.
Although I don't care for the "King of Pop" title, I don't blame MJ for doing this at all lol. IIRC, MJ started to mandate networks calling him by this title because the Grammy Awards snubbed him in 1988; they invited him to perform only to not give him any awards. If networks are gonna use you for their own gain, then it's only right that you'd get something out of it yourself.

You could call it being a diva, but he still allowed them to make money off of him when they accepted his conditions, so it checks out. "You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours"
The music industry snubbed him in 1988, and that was because of a very specific reason.

English record producer Jonathan King explained what happened:

"Michael should have swept the board. But, this year it was the A&M and WEA record companies' turn to win and that's why Sting and Paul Simon got their [Grammy] awards" (Jonathan King)

It is interesting for example that Sting's 'Bring On The Night' album won a 1988 Grammy Award, although this album did not have any hit singles, while the 'BAD' album had 6 hit singles that charted in the Top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100.

Don't take my words so literally, and who is this Sintara person! Never heard of him! How can he be Kind of Pop when he is not that popular :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I guess he is not that popular, that's why!
Hiker, you're messing with us, yeah?

But Frank was cool. I wasn't keen on his 60's stuff, too smooth and MOR for me, but in the 1950's? In his films? omg, he was the business. Hats. Sharp suits. He sang. He danced. He acted. He could do it all. He was in some awesome films. Guys and Dolls. On The Town. From Here To Eternity.

you lost me at 1960s and 1950s :D. I know Elvis (is that helpful!) :)

Frank Sinatra said and I quote: “The only male singer who I've seen besides myself and who's better than me – that is Michael Jackson.” Amazing coming from a dude who said he hated music like rock n roll

Apparently Frank Sintrata said this! I copy paste this from google lol
Now someone has to post the pictures of MJ with Frank because my tiny brain doesn’t know how that works

PS @Hiker she’s out of my life was supposed to be a song for Frank Sintarara

You're Canadian right?
worse! European :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:
Seriously though, I am really not into music. Pop culture was never part of my life up until last year. Even now its just Michael, I don't venture beyond that. So my not knowing this Sintara person does not hurt his popularity.

A while back I posted the video clip of Michael visiting Frank in the recording studio.

omg, you're not joking! I thought you were just messing with us!

😲

Anyway, I bumped the thread. Video clip of Michael and Frank being cool together.

Aw man, I'm sorry. I didn't mean anything by it. It's just, idk, there's been a lot of regulars on this sub, none of them wanted to be mods. In the decade I've been on here I think I've known only like 5 mods. Probably less so.

That post is a train wreck but don’t worry I make plenty of those 😄

@zinniabooklover she isn ‘t messing, I knew that right away, I’m already familiar with her lack of musical knowledge. 😇

It actually shows how incredible Joseph Jackson is right? He turns someone who isn ‘t really into music into a huge fan! @Hiker bless you! 👍

shows how incredible Joseph Jackson is
Really! Maria whatever-your-last-name-is, we are going with Joseph Jackson now .

PS: As I was telling Zinnia earlier, yesterday I was super annoyed because I was getting in pointless arguments all day (e.g. trying to convince someone that when you say something that is not true to get what you want it's being dishonest, and that to a 34 year old not a 4 year old!). So this was bound to happen, it was just that kind of day.

Well, I'd like to know why I'm even in this space. I'm trying to get to the Food Network but I keep ending up over here. What is this place? Who are all you people?

Music? I believe there is a young singing lady called Taylor Swift. Is this one of her videos? I'm not sure!

1m 45s

@filmandmusic - this one's for you. :ROFLMAO:

You were supposed to tell it to a 4 year old but you accidentally told it to a 34 year old? 😜

I insist to be called Maria from now on, it fits very well wit my imaginary macho image.

@zinniabooklover ah that’s where your quote comes from!

What is wrong with everyone? :ROFLMAO:

@Hiker doesn't know Frank Sinatra. You don't recognise Sound of Music quotes. I just assumed you would get the point / joke I was making.

Talking about the Sound of Music:

Michael with Charmian Carr who played Liesl von Trapp in " The Sound of Music".

Hiker can I ask how old you are?

I was reading your posts and I'm flabbergasted that you've never heard of Frank Sinatra? Like seriously? 😵‍💫

Even if you're not the biggest fan of music in general, the name Frank Sinatra has been embedded in pop culture and general life throughout the world!

My way , New York New York , strangers in the night, the lady is a tramp.... His songs are always in films and on adverts , talent shows , impersonators.

When researching MJ online and the biggest artists ever etc Frank is always there about.

Have you heard of Michael Bublé and his style of singing? He's a poor man's Sinatra.

I’m not fond of musicals, I have seen the film though many years ago.
Fair enough. Tbh, I don't like the film myself. Michael liked it, I would imagine, for the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein. Or maybe for the story as well, who knows? But the music would be a big deal for him, he loved those guys.

I love a lot of the classic musicals once they are turned into Hollywood films but musical theatre, generally, is not my jam. But SoM is so embedded into popular culture. Or maybe not, lol. :ROFLMAO:

Frank Sinatra is amazing. One of the best singers up there with Freddie Mercury and MJ - But his songs are not what I would call pop songs.

Lady is a Tramp
New York New York
My Way
Strangers in The night

List goes on forever - Frank Sinatra has sooo many songs (like Elvis he never wrote a song, he only sang other peoples songs)

Mr- Blue Eye was jazz and Swing. - I have many many of his concerts - always with a Big Band with many people playing all the classical instruments.

I have never heard Frank Sinatra refered to as King of Pop
