Most royal weddings (and funerals) take place at Westminster Abbey - which is a much nicer cathedral, imo. Actually, strictly speaking, Westminster Abbey isn't a cathedral. It's an abbey church and a Royal Peculiar but it functions as a cathedral. St Paul's is much bigger, though, and since Charles was the heir to the throne at the time they had to invite half the world to the wedding. When Prince William got married in 2011 that wedding took place at Westminster Abbey bc William was only 2nd in line to the throne.
