Is It Scary (song discussion)

I agree. This song is a monster of a masterpiece, and when I realised what it;s about I was very surprised and proud for Michael.

In Threatened , Michael is kind of singing the same thing, except he's singing as a character. Is It Scary is 100% Michael spitting venom. I think Is It Scary is one of the most raw and honest songs Michael has. He's basically putting it all on the table, everything that's said about him and just going "D'ya know what, I'll give ye an f'ing show if ye want one". It must have just been a very big venting project for Michael, just letting go.

I remember the morning BOTDF was released in Ireland, I woke up and this song was played on the radio before I got to go out and get the album and it was the first song I listened to when I got the album. Actually, I also remember vividly when leaving the RDS in 97, one guy in his 20's was furious that Michael didnt play this song, and his friend was like "ive never even heard that song" and he was going mad haha.

I know Michael said Childhood was his most personal song but honestly I think Is It Scary is more personal. There are so many truths in the lyrics and so directly aimed it effects me almost every time I hear it.

"Masquerade the heart
Is the height of haunting souls
Just not what you seek of me
Can the heart reveal the proof
Like a mirror reveals the truth
See the evil one is you"

I love the song, always have and always will. Besides everything else you have all said about Is it scary, is that this song has this atmosphere that draws you in to what is going on, you feel like the Maestro is singing to you and I can soundtrack to the various paranormal experiences I have had in my life.
The song starts almost with spooky mists swirling around you as the creepy doom piano and Michael's gesticulations and suspurations of a ghost coming right for you.

Even better is if you listen to Ghosts and Is it scary as one continuous "suite" as the songs blend into each other.

"And if you want to see.... eccentric oddities, I will be grotesque right before your eyes", uummmm okay he says at 3am on a dark and quiet night.

And now Michael is dead, that makes it even spookier as it sounds like the type of prank he would want to play.

One other thing, PLAY IT LOUD!:punk:

"Am I amusing you
Or just confusing you
Am I the beast
You visualised
And if you wanna see
Eccentric oddities
I'll be grotesque
Before your eyes "

Just reading these lyrics gives me goosebumps. One of his best.

By a landslide scarier and better than Thriller. It's scarier because it became a horrendous reality, it's precicely how the flock of shipple continue to percieve him. My poor thing Michael! :(

This is (IMO) the best horror themed song that Michael ever did. I love the melody

It's an underrated masterpiece

Absolutely. It's my favorite song. It's perfect. The lyrics is bloody brilliant.

Am I amusing you
Or just confusing you
Am I the beast
You visualised
And if you wanna see
Eccentric oddities
I'll be grotesque
Before your eyes

But if you came to see
The truth the purity
It's here inside
A lonely heart

Masquerade the heart
Is the height of haunting souls
Just not what you seek of me
Can the heart reveal the proof
Like a mirror reveals the truth
See the evil one is you

It couldn't be more obvious what he is talking about.

Childhood and Is It Scary are Michael's Jekyll and Hyde for me. Both of them go hand in hand. Both are aimed at those who have misconceptions about him, but they are day and night.

Childhood is more of a plea for understanding where as Is It Scary is just a general f*ck you to others in my opinion. Almost like he was trying to divide those who simply had innocent misconceptions based on what they had been told by the media, and then those who maliciously spread lies, refused to believe his earlier message in Childhood and just plain believe the worst.

Both equally relevant to his personal life. Both fantastic songs. Is It Scary would have been an apt replacement for Come Together/DS on the 2nd leg I think.

Am I right in saying this song was written before the '93 allegations?

I love it. I love those agressive lyrics type of songs, with a strong personal message to go with it. when he had something he wanted to tell the world, he wrote a song about it, which is something the general public are not aware of. go listen to those songs, with an open mind...then come back and tell me how you feel about him now? i'm not sayin to judge him on that alone, but it give you a pretty damn clear understanding of what it was like being him, and what he was going through, how misunderstood he was...despite everything he's done to get it out there...

. But it started as something completely different. Nobody knows this, but it was originally going to be a video to promote Addams Family Values. In fact, Christina Ricci and the boy who played Pugsley were both in it. We shot for two weeks and never got to the musical numbers. It was very expensive and ambitious. And when the first so-called scandal happened, it was when we were shooting. Suddenly, Michael was out of the country, and the studio no longer wanted him to help promote that film.

and then

Stephen King and Michael put together a script for another scary music video -- one with huge scale, even compared to Thriller

That theme of the outcast stranger that he and King created was important, and stayed the focus through various incarnations.

"Is It Scary" became incorporated into "Ghosts." But I was not there when the production continued in 1996. I'd get midnight calls from Michael, who was so passionate about finishing it, making it special.

I can't get enough of his moans/sounds in the chorus. Like: "Is it scary for you *this one*" And Stephen King? My favourite author together with my favourite...well, everything. Can't be bad, can it? No wonder I love both the song and the video! I love to get scared!

I was there too!

I miss threads like this

Is It Scary is one of my favourites from Michael, although I don't play it as much as other stuff, but whenever I do I'm always blown away by it.

I love when Michael does these build up choruses in his songs, it's similar to Liberian Girl, Another Part Of Me and Mind Is The Magic.

I still make threads like these.

Always loved and love this song. I really like how it starts and gradually builds up into a flurry of emotion and then subsides. Michael very wisely did it this way. Enjoyment and šŸ˜
