well i was listening to the early demo (What about us, some people say its from the dangerous sessions) and then i watched earth song from this is it in youtube..
I know the ending of both songs (what about us, and the one in this is it) ends in the same way with that falsetto voice. but no way is that the same what about us demo we got!
He sings the words very diffrently then the demo and you can hear it clearly!

So my thoughts on this is that there are 3 versions of earth song (probably more who knows)

What About us (early demo)

Earth Song (Demo, Used in this is it)

Earth song (History Album)

Idunno thats just what i think..

Yes,I've noticed that right there,in the cinema. The version in the film is different from What about us.Some lyrics are different, some words are sung different etc.

I loved the orchestral sweep during Earth song...it felt extremely moving and touched my emotions..very different than the album version

Initial ideas were layed down in late 1986. Work on the final album version had started in 1989.

Source for this one?
There were early versions, some songs would start with one production team, then migrate to another, etc. It was never quite as cut-and-dry as saying "Today we are going to record Earth Song," because that song started in 1986, but went into serious production in 1994! - Brad Sundberg

The earliest version of Earth Song is from 1988 right? Some sources say 1989.
The earliest version of 'Earth Song' was recorded in 1988, not in 1989.

Fans who attended Brad Sundberg's seminars revealed that he played for them the earliest version that was recorded in 1988 (October).

This earliest version has Michael Jackson's vocals, piano music, scratch lyrics, a musical tempo that is slightly higher (compared to the official 1995 version), and a melody that is pretty much the same as the official 1995 version.

Even American author Joseph Vogel was unaware of this earliest version.

If I’m not mistaken, Bill has always maintained that “Earth Song” started in 1988. He was the one who corrected Joe Vogel and offered the recording dates. Haven’t seen any commentary from Bruce.

Something tells me this is likely Brad spitballing and not being literal (especially since “Earth Song” most certainly did not go into “serious production” in 1994–it was mostly finished by then).

Wasn't the story about Earth Song being created in Vienna, June 1/2nd 1988 during the Bad Tour?

I read somewhere Mike worked on it further in the US between the Liverpool September 11 1988 show and the 26th September Pittsburgh show?

I worked on Earth Song for a year.
M. had a lot of songs to work on
E.S. started to languish
I got my friends Steve Ferrone and Guy Pratt to play drums and bass
From then, M. seemed concerned but couldn't describe
Still he sang it, got Andre Crouch and I got George del Barrio for strings.
M. got David Paiche for more keyboards.
M. was still concerned.
I mixed it anyway as the album was wrapping up
M. never got used to something about the direction: too heavy?
It didn't make the album
Later, History sessions, M hired Foster
Worked and worked and by now M. was getting used to my version, Foster expressed his frustration to me at the grammys
My version and mix came out on History with only new vocals in the outro
Legal contract for Foster said he got first credit.

That production, that song, was unique
In that M. was a bit skeptical of the path I took
But didn't stop me. And he didn't release it
Until he was ok with it.
I am so proud of that song and of Michael's wisdom.

Way back in 1986 at Hayvenhurst he and I sat and he screened me "The Emerald Forest" in his theater.
He handed me a vhs tape of it to take home.
He was, even then, choosing me to work on "Earth Song".
I took that mission seriously, and so it was hard when he couldn't quite accept the best version, 4 years later, that we two could come up with together.
And then it didn't matter.

Sometime, as we were no longer working together, he found it as it was, and received it, and released it.
I am grateful for M's patience on this.

David Foster never had a chance against such History.

Not sure this counts as working on the song. Perhaps he had an idea for it, but the actual work didn’t begin until 1988.

Earth Song did start in 1986 but with different lyrics and later reworked June, 1988.

I remember writing 'Earth Song' when I was in Austria, in a hotel. And I was feeling so much pain and so much suffering of the plight of the Planet Earth. And for me, this is Earth's Song, because I think nature is trying so hard to compensate for man's mismanagement of the Earth. And with the ecological unbalance going on, and a lot of the problems in the environment, I think earth feels the pain, and she has wounds, and it's about some of the joys of the planet as well. But this is my chance to pretty much let people hear the voice of the planet. And this is 'Earth Song.' And that's what inspired it. And it just suddenly dropped into my lap when I was on tour in Austria. - Michael Jackson
