Thriller 40th Anniversary

I always felt that song was slightly modernized for the album. I guess we'll never really know.
The drums are something that gives it away that they may not have. It sounds like a drum machine, as does the Toy because it likely is. Who do you know doesnt need as much work compared to....the other song on thriller 40 I'm blanking on the name. Its like the yellow brick road one.

Hype was quickly over weak bonus tracks unworthy Thriller40 documentary

Beano, you've confused me. I'm saying the same thing as you. I'm saying that many people in Michael's fanbase know that Thriller was written by Rod but the general public - who might absolutely love Thriller as a song and might know it very well - most likely won't know about Rod. They associate the song with Michael. Rod has definitely had the respect and the critical acclaim that he deserves but the general public won't know anything about him, imo. For many people Thriller = Michael.

Did you mean to reply to 83magic?

Yes Rod deserve lot of credits for this song, but imo I think we shouldn't forgotten that "Thriller" was before Michael influence "Starlight", Temperton during has said during an interview that the music he work for Michael is done with a specific style, a special sound to use for him; who probably couldn't have worked for another artist, the writing is a long process between the writer, the producer and the artist, specially when you work with Michael and Quincy, also if I remember correctly Starlight was a supposed to be the title of the album before the song, simply because Michael liked the name (apparently he have tried to write the song himself, maybe the leak for Captain Eo), so yes it's complicated to give full credits or not to someone, the general public is general didn't care about who wrote a music, I'm not sure they were aware that Michael wrote his own songs to be honest (for example the difference with Jackson five music).

About Elvira amazing news, I would have loved to have her in the music, I wonder how the music video would have changed; Michael should have asked to appear for a version live for the Victory tour.

The Starlight Sun at 0:30 was just a working groove and never flourished into anything but it worked for EO

I think the song Thriller is massively underrated, especially because it's played everywhere. I thought the song couldn't blow my mind anymore because I'd heard it too many times. Today I gave it a try. For me, Thriller is the ultimate feel-good party song from MJ.

I like Thriller but most of the time, I'll skip it.

it's so underrated within the fan base

Nobody just listens to Thriller. It's the video all the time. They don't even analyze the lyrics so much.

I rarely watch the video...can't remember when the last was I saw it. It's been years. it's not that I don't like it though

Oh I agree to the fullest! I’d even go on record and say that the bridge is in the top 5 best bridges in Michael’s entire catalogue.

By the way, I think that P.Y.T. is exactly the right song for people who only know MJ's big hits. Thematically not as dark as Billie Jean and very catchy.
Certainly a dance floor filler.

Released on this date in 1982, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album – the best selling album of all time - continues to chart four decades after its release, most recently appearing within the top 30 of the Billboard Hot 200, for a total of 652 weeks on that album chart.

Yes, very good groove, I have read a long time ago that it was maybe the "original"starlight demo written for Thriller but ultimately it was asked to Temperton to write this song, more or less the same way that PYT was rewritten, but I'm not sure at 100% of this info.

About the bonus tracks, they were so beautiful, so soulful, Michael should really have put more albums just after Thriller, and not simply wait and change just everything with Bad, it's a shame, never understand his choices.

He literally made Victory with his brothers, what don't you understand about his choices when he did exactly what you wanted.

The unused CEO song has nothing to do with Temperton.

Have you ever listened to the "real" Starlight?

Yes but have you read my previous message ? I have said that Starlight, like PYT, was a title chosen before the song was written, Michael have tried to write the song itself but was not happy with the result, so they have asked Temperton to write the demo of the song who will become Thriller, I have read a long time ago that the Starlight of failed demo written by Michael was the same song that the demo of Captain Eo.

I mean he should have made a solo album before Bad with these demo, he have barely worked in Victory.

Do you have a source for that?

No, if I remember correctly it was a thread a long time ago, before the leak of starlight from Captain EO, I don't remember if it was the conclusion of the author where he have connected the dots, or something he have a clear source, for me that seemed logical.

Not true. Many songs intended for Victory were withhold.

Yes but ultimalety he have chosen to keep all his works hidden because he was scared to be overexposed, I know he have begun worked seriously in the album, he have chosen himself Michael Whelan for the cover, I should have said "participated".

He used demoes from multiple years on Bad. Dirty Diana, Liberian Girl, Another Part of Me. All literally date to the period of time you would prefer an album. The only thing he didn't do was use stuff from Rod Temperton or Steve Porcaro.

To have used 3 demo don't negate the fact he could and should made an album before Bad with the others demo, 4/5 years between albums was too long and he has enough works for another albums.

The problem with Bad is the rest of the album is mediocre and too extremely different of what he have done before, dirty diana demo is probably vastly different than the one in the album (he have completly changed his voice), also if remember Another part of me was a last decision by Quincy, it was supposed just to be part of for Captain EO, so a completly different project produced and releases in 85/86.

Bill Bottrell:

You must be careful with this. It's true the Bad release sounds extremely similar to the Hayvenhurst demos.

Demos finished, mixed and sent to Quincy:
Smooth Criminal
Leave Me Alone
Price of Fame
Speed Demon
I Just Can’t Stop Loving You
Dirty Diana
Liberian Girl

Nothing of Liberian Girl was changed. Merely an intro was added. Likely the same for these others. So this is a very bad and uninformed take.

And these are Michael's songs, not Rod Temperton tracks or anything else. Michael didn't feel like writing songs like Heartbreak Hotel or Billie Jean or the Girl is Mine anymore. You don't have to like the new stuff but show some understanding.
