"Michael", a biopic about Michael Jackson, is officially happening.

Of course.

It's a biopic.

That was always going to be what happened.

To be honest, it would be pretty silly to expect anything else.
Bohemian Rhapsody, Elvis, Rocket Man, A Complete Unknown were all biopics. These contain new mixes, or covers by actors and other artists. So it's not unheard of.

How are they so confident in greenlighting a sequel given how they are moving currently? I have heard that Universal was reluctant to properly promote this movie, the Estate and Lionsgate are doing the usual minimum effort job, and a true worldwide promotion hasn't even started yet. Are they confident that this movie will make billions off his name alone? Because so far they haven't done anything of the "unprecedented" promotion they promised. Many don't even know this movie exists. Sorry to be harsh but as you already know, many want the best out of this movie, both when it comes to reception and performance and currently neither is guaranteed.
We talking about this billion dollar number like it's mandatory. The movie will be a success, most definitely enough to warrant a sequal. Also, there is a lot that had already been filmed, millions upon millions of dollars spent on what they are cutting out of the current film.. It would be insane to leave the loss on the table when the footage is there.

Regarding promotion, there are issues - details I wont speak of publically. Yes, it is disappointing but we're working with what were working with. Note* It's not exactly whats been rumored but there is something.

The film is filmed great, Jaafar truly does a great job, if Comlan Domingo doesn't win a huge award for his portrayal as Joseph - I'd consider it a robbery.

I'm not saying the fans that stufy MJs life wont habe reason to nitpick things. I, myself had to get used to the creative liberties.. But within those liberties, dynamics are brought to life that the story we've heard for decades simply would not.

In a single scene, you'll see (for example) family dynamics that usually could take a good portion of a movie to explain.. The one thing that I'm most excited over is how the film shows Michaels heart. With that alone, It's a win.

Zionist

Edit : I did not realise Fuqua was too. Just for anyone that may be interested.

Dig up, film, dig up!

It has been a very strange lead up, but taking positives from your post.

Hopefully there won't be any more hiccups or potholes (after today) on the final stretch. Whatever about the film, I'd hate for his name to get dragged for something he had no control over - we all know how the internet works with stuff like that.

Would you say Jaafar’s performance is also worthy of awards or just Colman?

I keep forgetting about Miles Teller as Branca too!

I typed and retyped this many times, because I did sign an NDA.

Jaafar does an amazing job. I have not had visibility (aside from speaking to those who have seen it) as to the acting within the newest edits of the film. I saw the 90s. From what I saw, it would be possible, but the academies are also politics-driven. To give a newcomer a prestigious award would take a level of impressiveness that a tenured actor like Colman Domingo would not have to reach.

No knock at Domingo at all..

Jaafar kills it from what I've seen. I have word from some that have seen the new film in full - they say the same thing.

What impressed me (without discussing specifics), Jaafar captured not only the voice (which I had been dying for people to hear), but the way Michaels mind operates. He captures something no impersonator has ever..

I'm sure many here notices how Michael gets in his own head, in moments struggles with eye contact, speaks almost like he's confident yet questioning at the same time. That mental play we saw Michael do - Jaafar got that. I kept going back and forth wondering if Jaafar was doing it intentionally or he is legitimately going through those thoughts while filming.. I kept observing him between takes trying to figure it out. Of course, I didn't believe it was Michael, but I have never seen anything that close.

I hope this translates on camera the way I saw it. Though what I saw wont be in part 1.

Are you claming you saw the original verison of the film? The one that had barely entered post production? As considerable parts of that can never be shown, I would be interested to know how this was possible.

Yeah right… all these people claiming to have seen the film, know that stuff is going to release. These “insiders” piss me off

No, I was on set for a decent amount of time, have had a detailed look into what the original film was looking out to be, and I am friends with a couple members of the family. One, I consider a close friend.

I can't even say for certain the original film made it to an official post production. I am not sure. They were doing edits through the entire process.. trailers (for example) kept updating seemingly weekly with what they were filming.

Trailers aren’t usually edited until a film is complete. The family, outside of Prince, haven’t had much involvement either. I don’t really buy this at all to be honest.

You don't have to. I have nothing to prove.. Hopefully you enjoy the film.

Don't forget that there were special screenings of a trailer or two long ago. CinemaCon was 2 years ago.

does the film show when mj punched q in the stomach and said, "im the top brass around here son" and then moonwalked around him before exiting and going to eat raw chicken with some raw milk?

and of course, no mention of Michael at the Oscar at all. while there was plenty of Prada marketing. great job Lionsgate/Universal!

Not to get all tin foil hat, but there was definitely a media push (from things like the Penske group) to make LN a roaring success

Is it possible things like that negatively effect promotional opportunities?

If this group is trying to make LN a success they shouldve done it when it first aired

i just don't understand this half assed commitment from the shareholders where they seemingly greenlight the new version of the movie and sequels of It while allegedly not fully trusting the whole project and sabotaging its promotional phase. this movie had potential and the interest beyond the fan sphere was definitely there, it's their own sending mixed messages and not full commitment that is ruining the anticipation and end result. at this point i wished they scrapped the project all together, Michael deserves better than this.

What are people expecting from the promotion at this point that other films did have? Just curious for those that are annoyed with this.

i feel like they should have created a proper hype wave since at least the release of the second trailer: events attendance, physical promo with ads/posters/CDs, special re-releases, treat the rollout of the companion music a little bit better, better merchandise, worldwide promotion in general that Is currently missing, new media deals. anything that isn't just tiktok and social media edits which were awesome but can't be enough for the rollout of such a largely anticipated movie. the rollout is giving Thriller 40's level of mid incompetence and mood killer
