The Discussion of MJ's Unreleased Tracks

“We talked about the album and he told me, ‘I’m not trying to follow any trends. I’m not trying to go back in time. I’m just trying to do quality music with a melody that’s infectious and has a message.’” - ne-yo on what mj wanted his new album to be like. More confirmation that environmental message songs was going to be important.

Jokes need to be tagged as jokes on MJJC I'm afraid.

(Ironic that I feel it necessary to add that this is also a joke - too many people are way too literal and sensitive on here.)
I’m only literal because my autism makes it hard for me to differentiate whats sarcasm and whats not

Hello folks,

I'm going to Brad Sundberg's seminar in Bucharest and I want to ask him questions, especially about unreleased stuff.

Can you list your questions to put them to him?
Can you ask him about the state of completion of "Snakepit" and "Buffalo Bill"?

Both songs were mentioned in an article weeks prior to the albums deadline. (The R&B Report, June 1987)
Great idea! 👍

Brad Sundberg played a Jungle Version of Liberian Girl at the beginning of his seminars. I'd love to know more about that mix.

You should. The Michael 2010 version of HMH is actually very good. Too much Akon, but other than that, its a great production
The ad libs sound very cut and pasted as the song goes on, but MJ's verse and the chorus are very nice. I quite like the song.

I often wonder what would have become of MJ’s eleventh album if “Hold My Hand” hadn’t leaked. By all accounts, he and Akon were intent on releasing it on the latter’s 2008 album Freedom. I wonder if that would’ve been the kick MJ needed to actually get his comeback in motion.

That's nice and I do think the environmental message has its place. But how many of these songs have "hit" potential? Would that have been the goal? Because if so, actually going back in time (see OTW and Triumph era style music), would've been the successful blueprint, in my opinion.

Best song on Invincible... for me, that's Butterflies. And wasn't MJ reluctant to do that because he thought he sounded too much like his old stuff? Well that's what most people want. That is what is going to chart. I do think he started to lose touch as to what would be big on the charts. I think Will.I.Am had the right idea as to what direction to go.

Has any of his post "The E.N.D." material aged well? I remember that poor song with Britney and that god awful one with Nicki Minaj. I think Will was past it by the time he started working with MJ, and his remixes on Thriller 25 back this up.

TGIM and PYT remixes are good, for what they are.

Agreed. HmH is everything I missed on Invincible: carefree, organic, fresh. It sounds like Akon and MJ are actually enjoying singing on it. He still had it in 2007.

Makes it even more tragic there isnt a solo MJ version. That would probably be my favourite 2000s MJ song.

I still find it crazy how "Hold My Hand" uses bits of vocals from "Remember What I Told You" in order to make it seem like a more complete song, those remixes could very well be borrowing even more vocals from other unreleased songs but we'll only really know once they leak. Iirc one of the Cascio tracks also took vocals from "Get Your Weight Off Of Me".

^^ I really don’t think they did. I think the two ad-libs are just eerily similar. MJ did have a set of tricks he liked to use and wasn’t against reusing the same ones time and time again.

I just can’t imagine why Akon would use an ad-lib from an unrelated demo on a song that has full vocals (or how he got his hands on RWITY to begin with).

I disagree, I doubt the vocals are from RWITY. Could easily be from a take where Michael does ad libs along the song/towards the song or something

In his later years, he seemed to be obsessed with the ad-lib "Alright".

This is what I was saying before. Michael might have dissociated himself (or was dissociated) as a Jehovah' Witness but that doesn't mean his beliefs changed: he wanted to mimic Jesus. He wanted to make meaningful music. So we might like the idea of him recording with The Neptunes or Pharrell but he (apparantly) didn't see them helping him with creating that music/image

Orchestra version is awesome, I remember when I bought the single and heard it for the first time. Great version.
